Developer Log #16: Ship Builder (Patreon)
Content
Hello everyone!
It's been a while since I haven't posted an update on this project, this might not be the news you were expecting but I have to keep pushing so this does not fall into oblivion. I have no new image to show today, sorry.
A bit of history
Almost a year ago I opened the Patron Commission to anything, this was the most voted. The request was simple, give us a skyship (not with these words), but I wanted more and went increasing the scope of the project making it modular bigger smaller, etc.
Because of the amount of work and size of the project, I asked the opinions on Patreon with a poll, on whether should I make it into a Kickstarter. And the voting was decisive. A KS it was.
Present time
Here we are, almost 1 year after, and still not even close to finishing this project. I have a couple of reasons for this, I'm not trying to make excuses, just pointing out the reality.
Personal: I started spending more Sundays with my family.
Lack of skills: I don't have skills when it's something big, the result of this is that my workflow is messy and not practical. I have uploaded too much information and details on my workspace which results in slower software.
Unmotivated: Due to the current folder organization and slow software (provoked by my lack of skills), I have lost my motivation to work on this project. The funny thing is that I still want to see it printed if I have time I would like to paint it. Which is good, right?
About the future
The future will never come if we don't act in the present! To help this project see the light of day I have decided on a few more things.
Reduction of scope
One of the things I learned in recent days was that I needed to fail faster to improve, this project is way bigger the way it is, and with my current skills to tackle head-on. Going this road will get me where we are now. So a reduction of scope is needed.
A reduction of scope is needed, but what to cut out?
For now, I won't focus on modular connections/connectors. this will help my mind to focus only on the sculpting work. But I will keep in mind that those pieces will be reusable and others will need to be split to fit a smaller 3d printer.
The Interior will be removed, I won't focus on the playable interior. I need to make the ship come to reality.
No extra bits, the goal here is to have a ship. And this will be the end of the project (when I will call it done).
No modular tips. Making a modular ship from left to right (the width of the ship) takes too much time thinking, about how this piece would work, etc. I don't need this thinking time, I need to act and don't stop the momentum. So cutting this would make things easier. I will leave the modular adjustment for a later time.
Deadlines
To move forward and keep track of things I have decided to implement deadlines. This will help me focus on the project and push on.
The project will not be a Kickstarter anymore, learning to release a project on KS, making promotional material, and other things, it's a lot of work. Don't get me wrong, I'm not afraid of working, however, there is a limit to what I can accomplish solo and still keep Patreon running.
Due to the reduction of scope, I can set myself a reasonable deadline. Let's check them out:
June 7th: Reorganization of files and folders
June 14th: Eagle
June 28th: Engines
August 2024 Deck
October 2024 Hull
December 2024 Back part
June 2025: Skyship release as Imagine Minis 4 years miniature, available to all Patreons, Tribers. This miniature then be added as the first 9 month Loyalty reward.
Even though this miniature will no longer be a Kickstarter, I will still maintain it on the previously released posts and folder structure.
I will also include these deadlines on the Monthly report to help me organize for the next month, and give you guys something to expect on this project update.
Conclusion
The project is not dead, I will work harder and make it happen for the next Patreon anniversary.
I'm sorry if this was not the post you were expecting, and that the project is changing but, I do this thinking what is the best way to move forward and I try to be the most honest and straightforward that I can.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know.
Best regards,
Ivo
