Hello everyone!

On Friday I took the day to work on the Skyship and I would like to share my progress and changes:

What did I do?

This time I worked on the back section of the ship, focused on the Hull and lower walls, I haven't made the divisions yet. This time I focused more on sculpting rather than splitting and sculpting each piece separately.

What did I change?

To work on this area I merged all the previous pieces and lowered their quality (so it does not affect my PC performance while I work on a specific part allowing me to see the complete build ready.

After joining everything together I realized that the big rotors I did were small, so I increased their size a bit. Although I added divisions on the lower hull to hide seams when stacking tiles looking at the whole build It felt boring to see, so I painted it red as a reminder to remove or offer a version without this reinforcement, I will define this when working on exporting pieces.

I finished the back part and It didn't feel great so I tried to increase the width of the back part, to me it felt better. I did this without worrying about the grid size... this means that I will probably need to make some additional adjustments in October... Niiiice!

Concerns

With the build almost done, I can finally see what it's going to look like I added a ruler to check the dimensions... it's huge.

The hull by itself is approximately 85cm long ( 105cm from the tip to the back) and 38cm wide (56cm with the rotors). I changed my mind, it's not huge, It's massive.

And this made me wonder a few things:

Is there anything I can do to make it smaller?

How many people are going to print this?

Will glue even hold this thing together?

How much resin will this print consume?

Where will I store this?

What do I do to test the FDM printing without an FDM printer?

Planned for October 2024:

In October I will be working on the back section of the ship. The floor, the stairs, and the cabin.

Deadlines (Revised)

To move forward and keep track of things I have decided to implement deadlines. This will help me focus on the project and push on.

June 14th: Eagle - Done

June 28th: Engines - Done

August 2024 Sculpt (Front and mid-deck) - Done

August 2024 Sculpt (Front and mid Hull) - Done

September 2024 Sculpt (Back Hull) - Done

October 2024 Back part

January 2025 Model split (Front and mid)

January 2025 Support & TestPrint (Front and mid)

February 2025 Model split (Back Part)

February 2025 Support & TestPrint (Back Part)

March 2025 Additional Variations

April 2025 Finished assembly

June 2025: Skyship release as Imagine Minis 4 years miniature, available to all Patreons, Tribers. This miniature can then be added as the first 9-month Loyalty reward.

Even though this miniature will no longer be a Kickstarter, I will still maintain it on the previously released posts and folder structure.

I hope you have liked this post and the progress, if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Best regards,

Ivo

I will definitely print this. However, is there a chance for you to release a scaled down version as well? Personally, I wanted a desk piece that I can display without it taking half my table space. Around 50 cm would be the ideal maximum length for me. In any case, if a scaled down version is not possible, I will print everything with reduced size. But it would be best if you will have a scaled down version so that you can make the fragile/thin parts thicker for durability. I’m guessing that if I scale it down myself while printing, some parts might be too fragile.

A scaled down version with stylized parts might work, but I am not sure if that will take too much of your time. For example, the proportion of the eagle in front and the rotors can be slightly bigger than the rest of the scaled down ship since those features are the most iconic.

This would be interesting to make, however, this would need to be a different sculpture at some point making it harder to happen

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, I should have added a bit more thinking and measured everything before. I chose as a standard a 3x3 tile, meaning a section is 7,8cm long, so, if you cut one in the middle it should be smaller, but not on the width yet. I thought just passed through my mind, that maybe I could merge the whole ship or sections, scale it down (except thinner parts, these would need to be readjusted later), and then cut it, this method will, unfortunately, fill the interior (With a bit more work I could reduce the interior). There are 2 problems with this: is that it will also mess up the grid size of the miniature and I don't have the funds to keep testing everything. The modular part is interesting and easier to adjust but it takes time (to sculpt, support, and print)
