Mr Chips

I prefer voice notes!

Sorry to hear you got scammed! As part of my job I help investigate financial fraud cases and this sounds like a classic targeted social engineering scam, with the aim being to take over your Gmail account. Your inbox is effectively the master key to your digital life and once in they have access to a lot of valuable info. The scammers are set up like call centres now - it’s crazy. People clocking in and out, doing shift work, going to the office Christmas party… unreal.

Alex Ryan

…almost got scammed !

Casey, I think you are on to something regarding your traveling being connected to the potential scammer. Recently I stayed at motel (a small chain - they owned 3-4 properties) whose registration system got hacked. The hacker tried to use the information they had from my booking to scam me.

Yes continue with the revisits - they’re 🔥

Maybe the “Jason” one as a suggestion where you did the voices and people got mad 😂 it was such an interesting listen and shame that’s all people focussed on

I kept a Microsoft support call going for half an hour before telling the guy...'Oh,I know why your instructions aren't working...I'm actually running Linux mate..' I got called an 'effing C! Quite proud as an Aussie to have achieved that level! Edit: I was running Windows and nicely done Casey.

Lucy Lu

I really like listening to the writers speak about their work.

Melanie Sanders

I’m going to pitch in my support for voice notes. While you read quite well, there really is no substitute for hearing the writer’s perspective in their own words.

Corinna

I agree! Casey you're obviously an excellent reader of the responses (!) and I like hearing those too. But if the researchers/writers have time, hearing their voices adds some richness and puts a face (in an auditory sense) to the names.

A lot of people have all their login names with passwords saved in their Google accounts... Very good scam! To add to discussions about the GHB murders, despite popular belief, it's actually quite rare to die from an overdose of it, they'd have likely all taken much more than a recreational dose.

Hey Casey. I work in financial well-being. In Australia, you can get free help if you’re scammed or hacked from a not for profit called IDCare. They are fab as you get an individual case manager to help you and can access specialised scam therapeutic counselling. Good to know should anyone you know be affected by scams. Scams are indeed run by very professional organised crime businesses in call centre settings overseas.

Casefile

It's on the list to revisit

I'm an Aussie and I've never heard of the Bega Schoolgirl Murders. Their names sound vaguely familiar but I don't listen to any other Aussie true crime podcasts so I don't think I've heard the details.

Casey, you've probably already checked this site, but it can tell you which breach your email might've been exposed in. Unfortunately, most email addresses have been leaked at some point. https://haveibeenpwned.com/

Great to hear a behind the scenes, very interesting hearing about different facets of research and producing episodes. Maybe you could leak some bloopers as I heard Casey mention pronunciation or foreign names

Parking this here for the next BTF: 348: Toyah Cordingley. So many killers pass on people who are with a large dog. Why do you think this wasn't the case this time? And thank you, Erin, for including the follow up on Jersey. As awful as the case was, I was worrying about her at the same time and hoping that at least she was ok.

Yeah the MS scam is an old one. I’m so glad, that 25 years of IT made me sceptical of all unsolicited phone calls or emails. I too was contacted by “MS support” so I dragged out the call for more than 15 minutes and was eventually called a F’ing jerk and I know where you live. Too funny. Good job identifying the scam Casey.

Brett_T

I too prefer hearing the writers speaking. Thanks for asking.

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to Casey and the team. I really love the podcast. Its so insightful, intetesting and respectful. I discovered the podcast in 2025 when I had a brain anuerysm and had to lie still on a hospiral bed for a month. My husband is an Aussie so I adore "Caseys" voice. The cases in covered in this particular Q&A were absolutley incredible. Well done everyone and thank you. x

Ps. If you ever need help with Irish or Spanish pronounciations, I am happy to help.
