When Swedish backpackers Urban Höglin and Heidi Paakkonen go missing during a camping trip around New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula, concerns are quickly raised that the newly engaged couple could have fallen victim to foul play. Worries increase once it’s discovered that convicted killer, David Tamihere, was on the loose in the area at the time, having jumped bail on a rape charge.

Wow what a case! Such good story telling!

wow, this one really leaves me stunned. I don't know how the laws work in NZ, but in the US, the eyewitness testimony would have been thrown out based on the prejudicial nature. As I was listening to the tale, when the host talked about how the cops encouraged the eyewitnesses to go see Tamihere in person, my first reaction was... witness tampering, there's no way that will be admissible. When I heard they WERE allowed to testify, I assumed the defense attorney would chew them to pieces. At the very least impugn their identification of Tamihere. When THAT didn't happen, I have to believe the case would be overturned on appeal. When THAT didin't happen repeatedly, I assumed the two eyewitnesses would eventually be discovered as the real murderers. The cops in this case should be the ones in jail.

Amazing story telling, please do more NZ cases!

Excellent job CF team.

Great story telling as usual. One moment I said, well I don't think it's a coincidence that a violent criminal just happened upon a car and stole it but didn't commit the murder. About 10 minutes later in the story I'm thinking, well now that's quite a lot of probable doubt. So sad. I hope Heidi is one day found even if we never know what happened to them.
