Here are the packages for Second System version 2.5:Updated at 2225 (UTC-4) on 2026-03-23 with addition of D2D wrapper and API set for Windows Vista/7 and changes to ntdll for Windows 8.x to prevent remaining non-fatal missing DLL errors.Further updated at 2356 on the same day to add some additional API sets redirecting to kernel32 and advapi32, for Windows Vista and 7.Updated again at 2118 (UTC-4) on 2026-04-04 with added support for Cygwin (and any application that supplies a custom PATH to child processes during process creation). An issue involving Mullvad Browser has also been fixed on Windows 8.0.Updated again at 0327 (UTC-4) on 2026-04-08 with fix to potential deadlock issue when launching Firefox, as well as new ole32/combase functions, and a fix for the Discord updater on Windows 7. Rudimentary support for virtual terminal functions is available in order to allow the usage of the latest version of the Ollama command line application on Windows 7 and 8.x. As the feature was not completed at the time of release, some text formatting may not appear as expected and some text cursor operations may not work as expected either (the key: treat your prompts like statements written in pen, not pencil!).Updated again at 1459 (UTC-4) on 2026-04-18 to fix DXGI desktop duplication (Discord screen sharing) on Windows 8.x and add new functionality to Windows.UI.dll replacement.Special note: a new export from the DXGI wrapper is needed for a future extension to the D3D11 wrapper that is required to run UWP applications.

Sorry about that. Must've been sucked in with the tailing threes in the month and day as well.

Owen Bezanson

Nah it’s good, it’s just funny.

Owen Bezanson

By the way, random question. Everytime I try to run anything using second system in Vista it gets stopped by DEP, would you happen to know of a fix for that?

win32

Sounds like 32bit applications. Which updates have been installed? And were any other kernel extensions installed?

Èntèp Rèmèh

Do you recall that I mentioned I have a problem running Second System on Vista before? Yeah, it still happens. More info on my findings: 1. It freaked out if my username (or rather, %LOCALAPPDATA%) contains space. 2. SecondSystem only applies to currentuser. Is it by design? 3. It still copies to %LOCALAPPDATA% even if I specify a directory (e.g. C:\SecondSystem). After a few tries, it proceeded to install there, but still fail to automatically merge the reg file. 4. I made a test account that doesn't contain any space (let's say SecondSystem). Now I see steam running on task manager, but it didn't show the GUI.

win32

1. I thought that the issues with spaces were corrected a long time ago. I have tested against such user names and haven't seen any issues. 2. Second System is applied at the user level. This allows it to install and run without touching system directories or elevation to administrator privileges (on Vista and 7 anyway). 3. I was unable to reproduce any failure to copy Second System to alternative directory, including with user names containing spaces. 4. What happens if you run Steam with the command line switch "-cef-disable-gpu"?

Èntèp Rèmèh

So I traced the installation process from install cmd, and I found that command "%FolderPath%\secondsystem.exe Shell %windir%\explorer.exe" fails at startup, giving me "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application." I've manually tried to launch that command in cmd and explorer instantly crashes. Because of that, I think SecondSystem is failed to initialize, because when I run steam directly, it complained about unsupported OS. I tried to launch steam using command "%FolderPath%\secondsystem.exe Win11Config %STEAMEXEDIR%", it launched and listed in running task but no gui. Tried to launch it as "%FolderPath%\secondsystem.exe Win11Config %STEAMEXEDIR% -cef-disable-gpu" (listing the switch inside quotation marks on steamexe because spaces), secondsystem is running instead. So I tried '"%FolderPath%\secondsystem.exe Win11Config %STEAMEXEDIR%" -cef-disable-gpu' (listing the switch outside quotation marks), steam launches but still no gui. For additional info, I think I have updated to the latest update in my test vm, because I don't see another update on legacy update.

It’s fully up to date, and there are no other kernel extensions currently installed.

Trying to install Discord on Windows 7 Gives "Update has stopped working" and Installation has failed. heres the error log https://pastebin.com/bq4BpcnU

win32

I have now tested Windows Vista with 2026 updates. The media I used has a kernel32.dll version of 6.0.6003.23713 but surprisingly, explorer.exe is 6.0.6002.18005 from 2009. Second System worked very well. I wonder which explorer.exe version you have?

win32

Is this Windows Vista install containing 2026 updates (such as a kernel32.dll with a version of 6.0.6003.23713)? That has worked well for me, although I wonder which 32bit applications are being run - the ones I've tried have worked.

Èntèp Rèmèh

That's odd, I have kernel32.dll and kerel32.dll.bak on the base installation listed as version 10.0.6004.4006 from 2023 (https://postimg.cc/Z9Y45mgY), but same version of explorer.exe as yours. What I did prior to installation was installing every updates available for Windows Vista and Office 2007 on Legacy Update. Here's my installed updates: https://postimg.cc/sQDdsJMp

LuftRaptor

Tried to use this to run elgato wavelink on 10, got a bit forther but it still CTD with this error 0x80073d54

win32

I have found the issue causing the installer to crash and have now updated the packages.

LuftRaptor

Specifically wavelink 3.0.3

win32

This is the first "true" win11+ application that I have encountered (Premiere Pro 26.x still runs on Windows 10 22H2 without any spoofing even though it claims a minimum of 24H2). Up to this point, it has been used to run things like Qt 6.10+ applications on Windows 10 1809 and below (icuuc.dll and others). I will certainly have to make some adjustments but I think it will work in the end.

LuftRaptor

It launching and showing up in the tray was further than I got on my own so it’s already leaps and bounds ahead. If there’s any way I can help by supplying logs or knowing where to poke I can try, but otherwise since wave is free easily tested software I assume you plan to get it working at some point? Also windows 7 did NOT like me running the latest powershell with t. Still this is insane stuff, like WOW

Rocky

Unfortunately while the install completes now, the discord app itself does not open

win32

What happens if the Discord executable is launched directly instead of through update.exe as is done by the desktop shortcut? There was an old problem with Steam on Vista where it only launched if run through certain methods, which has since disappeared.

win32

Those are Vista extended kernel DLLs. I did make some adjustments to Second System in a somewhat recent update to improve interoperability for those who are stuck with it, although I recommend not having it at all.

Rocky

It also does not open

Rocky

Update: After uninstalling discord again and reinstalling it, the Discord exe now opens however update still doesnt

win32

I will certainly work on these pseudo-UWP/Appx applications. Looks like the error is related to it not running in the standard appx containers (failed call to GetPackageFullName). My plan is to make the modern applications independent of the current infrastructure, which will be necessary to run them on Windows 7 and below. I will also have a solution for PowerShell 7.6.0 out very soon.

Twisty Nado

after installing it on windows vista, it says that explorer is not responding, and it never starts

win32

Which updates have been installed?

win32

Most of the problems should be fixed by renaming kernel32.dll and then copying the version of kernel32 located at %WINDIR%\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-kernel32_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6003.20555_none_f40233c22236fea2 in its place. It should be there if the system is reasonably updated.

Jacob H.

Would it be feasible to extend support to Windows 8 Consumer Preview as well?

Jaguarek62

I have completely broken discord.. whenever someone tries to screenshare or if I try to screenshare, the app completely freezes and then crashes

win32

I will have to evaluate the number of internal functions that were withdrawn by 9200 or the other builds that I have attempted.

win32

Please try the latest version that I have added for 8.x.

Jaguarek62

well now it works for like a 3 seconds, then it freezes up, the other side can still see my screenshare, but the app is unusable. When someone starts the screenshare, I see nothing and then the app crashes.

Jaguarek62

little sidenote any video content, might be in server chat basically freezes the app.

win32

I found hardware where the issue occurs, but could only fix the server videos/GIFs in D3D11 mode, but not the screen sharing. For now, Discord will have to be started with switch --use-angle=d3d9 to use screen sharing.

Passerby

I installed Discord on Windows Vista (build 6003), but it immediately crashes. Tried with Windows 10 and 11 compatibility, no dice. What am I doing wrong?

win32

Unfortunately, problems with the official Discord client have not been fully resolved on Windows Vista. Does there appear to be a JavaScript or Node.JS error?

win32

I fixed some issues that were preventing it from running, but it looks like it needs my schannel.dll port to be finished.

Passerby

Tried installing it again, it's now throwing an "Update failed" error.

TSNH

For those who use Second System on Vista alongside the older Extended Kernel, since version 2.5 it's necessary to replace dxgi.dll with the original vanilla or current Firefox won't launch. Replacing it with vanilla didn't break any 7+ programs I tested even games, but did somehow mess up text coloring in terminal PowerShell 7 windows but it's fine if I spawn them from the old PowerShell, thats weird Now I tried replacing it back with Extended Kernel version but the situation didn't improve so idk

TSNH

Is there a chance for stable, modern PowerShell on Vista? Right now the situation is that: PowerShell 6 works but it's quite old and not well supported PowerShell 7.0 sometimes works and sometimes throws breakpoint reached - likely race conditions and this version is just buggy on it's own PowerShell 7.1 never works, this version is just buggy on it's own PowerShell 7.2 sometimes works and sometimes closes, sometimes hangs - likely race conditions and this version is just buggy on it's own PowerShell 7.3 and newer - they seem to be more stable but they support Win10+ now and on Vista with the SecondSystem each instance uses 4GB of RAM which is too much

Passerby

Extracting the app and running it from the "net45" folder does throw a Javascript error, though.
