Hi, rocket league dropped its easy anticheat and unfortunately it does not work under vanilla 8.1 or with extended kernel, is there anything that can be done about it?

win32

There was an update that came to me today and it was still EAC. I think I can fix it when the EAC is removed for me.

win32

I misunderstood - they *added* it. I'll test on my 8.1 laptop soon (main system is Vista and non-AVX so it doesn't go past the "press any key" screen). I was testing some other DLL wrappers that may be relevant but they are not finished yet. One of the problem applications is actually the Epic launcher.

Jaguarek62

I can definitely hook you up with a steam account with rocket league on it, you don't need epic games to play that. The eac launcher actually installs, opens, goes to the end and then crashes with c000005 access violation error with or without the extended kernel, though without extended kernel, you need to rename iswow64process2 to just iswow64process and fix the checksum

win32

Was that error in wd311.dll?

win32

Anyway, I have now released updates to D3D11 and DXGI with various improvements, mostly targetting 8.x.

sh20000sh

Tried this on my Windows 7 setup, seems doesn't start correctly with 0xc000001c, got any idea with this? Main point I tried was running latest snapshot of minecraft with polymc launcher. Which now uses VK_KHR_dynamic_rendering.

win32

Was this error on starting explorer.exe? And which updates have you installed on your Windows 7 installation?

sh20000sh

Yes. And I installed most of updates that can be found from Windows update.

win32

Including ESU updates?

sh20000sh

If this can be caused by update, I might try reinstall them. If then, which are those? And no, not ESU ones.

win32

I normally test against 2013 (Platform Update era), 2022 and 2023 update levels. I may have a January 2020 (KB4539602) testbed somewhere. I believe the update quality dropped considerably in 2019, but never encountered an error like that.

sh20000sh

I migrated my system drive with tool from Samsung a year ago. Would this cause something critical?

Do we need to install older versions of SS before this? I figured just install the latest- but I don't want to skip important updates

win32

No, you only need to install the latest version.

ginsengfutura

Hi, thanks for the release. Can I install this on top of an older version (2.3), or should I run the RemoveSecondSystem.exe from the previous installation first?

win32

Yes, I would uninstall the original version (with either the newer or older uninstaller - very old ones are not recommended because they don't have the prompt to retain user settings), then reboot or log off (to make sure all files are unloaded so they can be replaced), and then install the new version.

ginsengfutura

Everything went successfully according to your advice. Thank you for this great software!

Hey, I just wanted to mention that for future releases, I'd like Chromium-based browsers like Edge, Chrome, and Opera to automatically update to the latest version. Despite using SS, these browsers are stuck on Chromium 109. With Firefox, you can at least manually download the latest version from the archive, but that doesn't work with the Chromium browsers. They don't even have proper offline installers that actually work. However I am glad that Google Drive finally works, but it installs WebWiev 109 instead of the latest one. The system doesnt recognize itself as Windows 10. OneDrive doesnt work either. Spotify does install but no playback

win32

Yes, I have been attempting to make all Chromium installers compatible (both web installers and MSI installers; the automatic updater works the same as the web installer). I almost had a working method for the MSI installers, but it only worked on Windows Vista. The web installers may need combase.dll from Windows 10 (which looks like it will also be needed for all UWP applications), but I am trying to find a way to make them work without it. I will have to look into Google Drive not installing the latest WebView2 (which does work under Second System, and has been used to run the Ollama app on Windows 8.1). Spotify requires some WinRT DLLs (from Windows 8 or above) on Windows Vista and 7, and OneDrive is possibly in a similar situation.

Firat Acur

Thanks for the quick reply. I should have perhaps mentioned that I'm using Second System under Windows 8.1. So, Spotify doesn't work for playback, only for installation. And regarding Google Drive: When you run the installer, it will ask you for WebView2 during a clean install, after which WebView2 v109 is automatically installed by the installer. Furthermore, I get an EOL message every time I boot, as the system still identifies itself as 8.1. I also tested OneCore API for XP, and the advantage here is that the system fully identifies itself as Windows 7+. For me, the Chromium browser, MS Office 365 (although I think that even works without SS thanks to the abbodi7s patch), Spotify, and Google Drive are essential. Nevertheless, very good work!

Latest Discord client still doesn’t work on 7 or Vista— Throws multiple “access denied” and “incompatible OS” errors based on the log file on setup.

win32

The Windows 7 issue appeared in other Electron applications a long time ago (but was resolved on them and didn't occur on most systems). I see that it is now persistent so it should be debuggable now, although the outcome may not be certain. It may work on Vista if the whole payload (all the contents of the Discord folder after being launched on another OS) is copied. I am still working on bringing over an updated schannel that will allow the Discord updater to work properly.

win32

At this time, Discord is launching properly when started through x64dbg.

win32

Or even simply by launching Discord.exe in the app-* folder instead of update.exe (in the root Discord folder).

win32

I have now fixed the "acess denied" errors caused by Discord on Windows 7. It should start now when launched through update.exe.

lorenzo anti arraque

Excuse me i’m buy This page but i’m installing chrome and not page can one person help for fixing This problem

win32

Do any other errors appear? I have now tested on multiple Windows 8.1 systems including ones that had significant problems with Chrome in previous releases of Second System.

win32

You can try adding --use-angle=d3d9 to the Supermium shortcut, after the "chrome.exe" part. I don't have any modern AMD hardware but I know that D3D11 video decoding had problems on Windows 8.1 with Intel and NVIDIA as well. I added various workarounds to avoid crashes on those systems, which should have applied to AMD as well, but apparently it is completely different on there...

Jaguarek62

Just sharing my experience, if the OP is using driver that is post 2017, it causes HUGE issues when video decoding in WMP,VLC,CHROME,FIREFOX etc.. that is not second system issue, AMD abandoned wddm 1.2/1.3 and released broken versions.

lorenzo anti arraque

But how if amd abadonned version. i’m change graphic card to rtx 3060. Just one question is rtx 3060 load video YouTube in oldest Windows

lorenzo anti arraque

excuse me sir i'm installing photoshop and crashed so if one person help for fixing this problem

win32

Which version of Photoshop?

Passerby

Great! Looking forward to the next version.

Hello ! Just wanted to mention that the snipping tool doesn't render anymore, therefore making it unuseable ( Windows 8.1 ) Great program nonetheless !

win32

Unfortunately, it appears that newer iterations of Snipping Tool are not compatible with DWriteCore, and to use it, Second System must be disabled or placed in "No DWrite" mode. I do plan on eventually bridging the gap between native DirectWrite and DWriteCore.

Oscar Vallejo-Krul

No i mean like, the OG snipping tool from Win 8.1, 2014 executable There's in fact many Windows 8.1 programs that used to work fine but just don't work anymore under SecondSystem, like, even with Win 8.1 compatibility ticked on (Hasn't worked once this far)

win32

Can you tell me which other ones don't work so I can set them to be disabled by default (as they don't benefit from Second System in any way)?

Oscar Vallejo-Krul

VLC ( 3.0.21.0 ), iTunes ( 12.4.1.6 ), Paint.NET ( 4.3.12 ) and a few others, i'll expand the list over time if you want There's also something i wanted to know, one video game in particular got me some issues ( NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered ), it works very fine without SecondSystem but crashes on launch otherwise Yet it's a DX11 game that came out in 2020, so i figured maybe's there's a Windows 10 mode built-in, but i wouldn't know what is the purpose of something like that, maybe something related to the EA App / Denuvo DRM ? Also, another question, what about "Windows 10 mode" for .DLLs, how could i disable those ? Cause i got some injection mods that got broken because of SecondSystem, is that something i would do via registry keys ?

Oscar Vallejo-Krul

Also the newer versions of Parsec do not work because of the lack of "pws232.dll" according to the app.

win32

I have fixed the problem with pws232.dll, but ultimately the problem is that after Second System successfully loads parsecd.exe, the Parsec service launches another copy that fails because d3d12.dll can't be loaded by default and will need Second System for Services (version 3.0) to function.

win32

As for VLC, iTunes and Paint.NET, only the last one does not work in my testing (a missing DXGI function that I've never seen before). What kinds of errors did you get on the other two? As for games, some of them do not like DLLs from "foreign" directories (CS2 does this if loaded through the Steam client but not directly from its exe). I am testing things, but nothing can be certain yet. Earlier on in Second System's life, certain injections like the ones done by terminal emulators and GTA Connected into GTA IV did not work, but they were fixed by ensuring that all injections were directed to the "right" DLLs. I do wonder what your injections patch. Do you want to exclude specific DLLs from Second System? It may be doable, but I will have to test for various side effects.

Oscar Vallejo-Krul

I see, but Parsec does support Vulkan and OpenGL, would disabling that .DLL through CFF Explorer help in the meantime ? As for iTunes, pretty much half of the textures and fonts don't load, not just the texture, but like, the buttons as well, it essentially becomes a paperweight, and VLC, VLC just crashes at launch. Yeah, excluding maybe via a path or something ? I also had a new question, tha manual mentions PCSX2 working without fastmem, on my end though, i have an error when launching the .exe : " Entry point of process ucnv_reset can't be found in dynamic link library Qt6Core.dll ", am i missing something ? And one last for the road, isn't there a Discord server or something for SecondSystem i could join ?

ben0258

I’m on Windows Vista, and when opening some programs it gives an error saying the handle is invalid. I have to use the context menu to work around this issue

win32

I was unable to reproduce any issues like that with the current May 19 version. But I am testing a new feature that does field similar results (in that applications work when launched directly through Second System but not through Explorer). I will see why this is happening and fix it.

win32

I was able to get Parsec working after some changes to the D3D11 runtime, but parsecd.exe would still need a patch with the core Second System for Services patcher, which must be done with elevated privileges. Second System for Services is approaching finalization. I am not sure about iTunes, perhaps it is an odd DWrite issue that can be resolved by falling back to the system DWrite ("No DWrite" mode). For VLC, you can submit a crash dump privately to me (it can be created after creating the registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps, they will be in %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps by default). I think the exclusions can be done in the "Config" part of the profile, but only for delay-loaded DLLs. I still need to do more testing, although I was able to successfully implement the NtOpenFile fix that will help with some Valve products that do not like DLLs from "foreign directories". Newer Qt 6 applications use several DLLs and supporting data files introduced later in Windows 10's lifespan. However, due to a lack of redistribution rights, they cannot be supplied with Second System: https://www.patreon.com/posts/new-requirement-148823382 After various experiences, I decided to set up an independent bug tracker instead, however, its backend is still not complete after a recent migration of the Supermium/LSC web hosting.

Oscar Vallejo-Krul

I see ! How would i send you the crashlog, via DM ? (That's also one of the reasons i think a Discord server would be quite convenient) About PCSX2, i did picked up the files from a base Win10 22H2 build, but now it gives a different error when launching it (App could not start correctly (0xc0000142)), is there an extra step i would've missed ? Thanks for the support !

win32

For the crash dumps, yes a DM would be good, although if you don't have a good file host, you can send them to me on Discord (ntkrpamp). As for PCSX2, make sure that Windows\Globalization\ICU exists and that all the DAT files are in that directories. That is the main reason for ICU.dll failing to load.

Oscar Vallejo-Krul

I'll send them via DM then, it should be good ! For PCSX2, i transplanted the ICU folder from my Windows 10 computer, a friend of mine showed me that he has the exact same files too on his build, it should be all good ? - icudtl.dat - metaZones.res - timezoneTypes.res - windowsZones.res - zoneinfo64.res There's more .DAT files ?

ben0258

I downgraded Second System to 2.5 and now I'm not running into this issue. I also probably should have provided an example as to what programs were causing this issue; when launching regedit using the Run dialog, it would immediately throw the handle error. I also ran into some programs that threw the same error when launched from Explorer.

win32

I want to see if the issue can be reproduced in 2.5 by changing to the 2.6 x64 ntdlx.dll (as I eliminated all known handle leaks in that version of the DLL), or with the current 2.6 x64 pwrs_k32.dll as I observed a similar issue and corrected it on May 19.

ben0258

I am sorry for the...delayed response, but replacing both DLLs with the 2.6 variants does in fact reproduce the issue in 2.5. I also tried the other way around, SS 2.6 with ntdlx and pwrs_k32 from 2.5, and it does not reproduce the issue. I am able to launch regedit without a handle error. I've also observed that for some reason, Windows thinks a new Bluetooth PIM has been added or removed after (un)installing SS.
