Various changes are planned for the next version of Second System, which will be bumped up to version 3.0.A New Configuration Applet

The user will be able to select the profile for the target application from a drop-down menu, to provide an experience closer to that of the Windows Compatibility tab.Second System for ServicesA supplemental version of Second System will accompany the original version, targetting services and the Windows Installer. This is a necessary step to run some installers, including Google's web installers. It will require access to the system32/syswow64 directories and may also run on older versions of Windows than the original Second System.

hi, sorry to type all this here, but i’ve found my second system settings do not save, and that a lot of control panel links, such as systempropertiesadvanced.exe or even regedit, throw me “File system error (-6)”. I turned off UAC as you said however I do have to run as admin each time for programs to run, and it’s still cumbersome when i am not running from Start. i tried setting the defaultprofile to passive but it still does not work. also was wondering if DEP errors were normal for certain installers. thank you

win32

Which installers are they? Are you running on Windows Vista? And which updates have you installed?

Bill

Hi, not a subscriber of the project yet, but since you seem to want to update the windows installer on older versions of windows i thought it might be useful for me to share my experiment here. I managed to transplant windows installer 5.0 from a Windows 7 installation to Windows Vista (it needed the extended kernel to work, though i suspect second system will work just fine). It worked, installed almost all msi packages i tried except a copy of vmware workstation 12 which would throw a blank warning window and reverse the installation. If you think it would be helpful i could send my findings to you.

hi, my vista is on build number 6003.23713 as i installed the last server 2008 update. i also have kb4474419. let me know if there’s anything in particular the installers in question were quite a few, including soulseekQT and python (the latter which i imagine won’t work anyway but thought i’d try)

win32

I have also done this, but because of the additional requirements of the installers which Second System cannot satisfy in its current form, a patcher/replacer script has not been released yet. VMware Workstation is tricky in particular because the main installer does a version check, and then right before copying files it executes another MSI in its temp directory which does another version check. Did you also copy over the related *.mui files into the en-US (or your main OS locale) directory in system32/syswow64? That contains many strings used by Windows Installer.

win32

If you run Task Manager through the Ctrl-Alt-Del menu, and then launch regedit from it, does the error persist? I do not have any issues with the Second System 2.6 version dated 20260519 so I wonder if there is an underlying issue, possibly a hardware issue complicating things. SoulseekQT installed, although it needs the comctl32 6.0 hack. The Python 3.14.5 installer now requires Windows Installer 5.0, but the version from the zip archive works, although the python directory will have to be added to PATH manually.

blaze

i’ll give this a shot and let you know, right now i have to manually click to run as admin or click disable SS. and thank you for letting me know about the comctl hack, i’ll do that once i’m back on. thats also how i did python myself since none of the executables work

i copied the msiexec.exe.mui file from system32\en-us as well as other *.mui files that i suspected were relevant to the windows installer. Other windows such as the "preparing to install" window on windows installer had text normally, but i may have skipped some file. Also the vmware installer did manage to get quite far into the installation, with the last action it performed before giving an error being "Installing product configuration" so I'm not sure if the version check is the issue. I'll probably check if i missed any relevant files in the weekend and see whether i can get an error code from the vmware installer (event viewer gave me a code, but it's been so long since i originally did this that i dont remember the code, or it's description). I will update you accordingly. Thanks for your time.

Hi, could you please for the net release exclude windows denfeder on windows 8.1? it transforms into windows 10 1607 defender, but it is completely broken. disabling second system for it fixes it.

Sorry to ask here, but are you aware of any issues with using the save button on Signal Desktop for saving images & files? Other functions like the reply button seem to work on the latest version of Signal, but for a few versions now the download/save button has done nothing when clicked on. It's not the worst issue to have but it would essentially make it impossible to receive files or download videos over Signal.

win32

I have never used Signal, but does it open up a standard Windows save file dialog? There were problems like this with the official Telegram desktop client, but most have been resolved. Those are conflicts with IE (which is involved in some of these shell operations), and may be worse with IE10/11 than 8 or 9.

ginsengfutura

I just spun up a Windows 10 VM and installed Signal there to test this out. It looks like it opens up a standard Windows "Save As" window. I believe Signal is an Electron application too if that matters. It's actually the single piece of software that made me decide to subscribe here and Second System so far seems to run it perfectly fine with the single exception of this inability to save files. Thanks again for all the work.

win32

I found the issue with Electron applications and file dialogs and it should be fixed in the latest revision to version 2.6, for Windows Vista and 7 (8.x and above should not be affected): https://www.patreon.com/posts/157039491 Only one file is changed, the x64 version of p_thems.dll, so you can simply rename and replace the existing copy of the DLL and skip the install/upgrade process.

ginsengfutura

Looks like that worked. Thank you!

Hello, sorry to ask this here but is it possible to backport bluetooth framework to older version of Windows? Connecting modern bluetooth device (for example Sony WH-1000XM5) to my Vista running BCM20702A0 is problematic, but it has better connection on Windows 11 on the same system.

win32

Which drivers does the device rely on (as shown in Device Manager)? I believe I can do it.

Miraak Thuri

I suppose he is talking about the universal microsoft bluetooth driver stack that was added in 8.0 and above (just like the microsoft stock USB 3x driver from 8.0 and above but this one was already backported, tho more limited on vista than 7)
