Second System 3.0: New DLLs, New Tools, New Capabilities (Patreon)

This release of Second System adds a wide variety of improvements and changes, including:

A New Configuration ToolThe old right-click options have been replaced by a single option that opens up a simple menu that provides further details about the application you want to run.

Second System for ServicesSystem services that are detected as being incompatible with the target system will be automatically patched before starting. This includes the Google Updater service used by Chrome and Google Earth Pro, as well as the WebView2 installer. This means that the applications in question will be kept updated consistently.

New DLLsWrappers for the DLLs mmdevapi.dll and dxcore.dll are now included. This means that voice calls will now be possible in the official Discord app on Windows 7, and it should be possible to run DaVinci Resolve version 21 on Windows 8.x.

Hello, regarding that .DLL injection topic we discussed the last time ... How would it be possible to flag certain .DLLs to be used in Windows 10 mode and not all of them down the chain ? Is it possible to make a program be launched as ..... SecondSystem enabled ..... But with a specific .DLL running as SecondSystem disabled ? Cause i have a new example on hand, i have a program ( Launcher ) that doesn't work with SecondSystem enabled ... Can't launch the .exe because the DRM for it only works with SecondSystem enabled ... Essentially, i would need to run that launcher in SecondSystem disabled, only for the targeted .exe and .dll to launch in SecondSystem enabled ... Would that be possible ?

It would be easy for delay-loaded DLLs, but may not be for DLLs referenced in the import table of an executable or DLL. I would have to find a consistent method for determining not only when a DLL starts to load, but also when it has completely loaded, and not before or after that point.

The specific issue with the DRM is that it's really some petty bullshit anyway, anything would run fine with SecondSystem disabled if it wasn't for some updated stuff specific to Windows 10, it's giving the "SetThreadDescription" entry point issue, can't that stuff be patched with CFF Explorer ?

Yes, you can change the "kernel32.dll" to "pwrb_k32.dll" which is my new wrapper for modules that can't use the regular Second System. Or drag and drop the exe into sespatch.exe in the Second System folder, which will patch up the PE checksum automatically. Is this DLL digitally signed?

Nah, but lmfao i just replaced SetThreadDescription with a dud and it works ..... Just a shit job with someone that invited half of Windows SDK's into his .DLL never fucking mind Although this is now fixed ..... For the moment ...... Uhhh, i was trying PCSX2 again and i'm still having the same issue as before, could you think you could help me with that real quick ? Thanks again for the support :3

It turns out that PCSX2 does not need the Windows\Globalization\ICU directory to run (although some other Qt apps and .NET apps do). What happens if the ICU directory is renamed?

when launching csgo on steam I get a dialog saying "failed to load the launcher dll: The specified module could not be found." I tried using defaultconfig, dx11game and disabling second system but nothing worked. Any fixes? System has Windows 7 and 2026-01 updates

Where to I put this .dll file? It's already in the secondsystem x64 folder

Rename the file (to something like ntdlx.old) and place the new one in its location.

I did that and then logged off. Now it just says csgo.exe is not responding. I looked into the event viewer and is says the faulting module is kernelbase.dll - C:\Windows\SysWOW64\kernelbase.dll

When using the defaultconfig profile on csgo it goes back to the .dll error and when second system is disabled it goes back to csgo.exe is not responding.

Unfortunately, there are still some problems preventing Edge from fully functioning on Windows 8.1, except for WebView2. But the web installer should work.

Is sespatch.exe in the main Second System directory? Someone did not have it copy for them even though I use a XCOPY command in the installer script.

Is updater.log written in Program Files (x86)\Google\GoogleUpdater? I wonder if there is a 0x800700C1 in there (indicates no attempt to patch) or not?

After updating and installing epic games launcher I immediately get this .dll error upon launch, "The program can't start because api-ms-win-downlevel-kernel32-l2-1-0.dll is missing from your computer." It also tries running the updater again after dismissing the dialog and then it completely closes.

I have updated the Windows 7 package to include the DLL definition that was missing. You do not even need to reinstall; you can simply apply secondsystem_win7defs.reg to get the new definition.

I've applied the new definitions but now it shows nothing after it checks for updates. When running as an admin using the defaultconfig profile, I get the error 0xc0000005 dialog.

I am currently testing (and found out that it does not run at all if D3D feature level 11_0 is not available). So far, I have found that the launcher creates an updater process and then closes without errors. The crash was not reproduced, although I will test on another system.

It is very odd considering that I have been running it on Vista and 8.1 for awhile.

How can I disable second system from running on native windows 7 apps such as windows media center, calculator etc?

You should have the info in the PDF file, but basically you go in the registry to this: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\LSC\SecondSystem Create a new String Value, call it "DefaultProfile" and set it to "Passive" (you should also remove from the list there the applications paths that do not report to be run under "Passive" or "Shell") once you do that restart and then only the applications that you set to be run under Second System will be affected

Is there a chance that you can make Parsec work with Second System?

At this time, it may work by copying Second System's x64 d3d12 DLL to system32, and then dragging and dropping parsecd.exe into sespatch.exe (located in the root Second System directory), and then running it. This worked on an 8.1 system. A more seamless approach may require Windows Installer patching, which I am currently working on.

Is sespatch supposed to drop a file when it patches an EXE? I've dropped parsecd.exe into it and nothing happened, and Parsec still refuses to launch. On Windows Vista x64.

It is supposed to patch the existing exe/dll, but I have now found that it requires sas.dll, which was only introduced in Windows 7, as well as some other missing functions that are not implemented in "service" mode yet.

You should now be able to install and fully run Edge as of the most recent Second System update.

I've tried to run the portable version and it fails to launch with: "The procedure entry point WTSEnumerateProcessesExW could not be located in the dynamic link library WTSAPI32.dll." It then gives another error code, 0x7F.

When opening a pdf using the latest official version of firefox, I always get an error from "WerFault.exe" saying that the procedure entry point GetOverlappedResultEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll. This also happens when visiting some websites too but mainly opening pdfs. Windows 7 with the latest Second System defs.

It looks like an attempt to invoke the crash reporter in Firefox, however, I haven't been able to reproduce it yet.

The addition of the wrapper for mmdevapi.dll (p_mmdeva.dll) was the final step for Windows 7, specifically. Please verify the profile that Discord.exe is set to, just in case it is not on something like "Shell".

Discord.exe is running on the default profile that second system sets it to, i think the only issue (which i should've elaborated on a bit better, apologies) im facing was that my microphone wasn't being picked up. hearing others and screenshare was working perfectly but I just couldn't talk to anyone, despite being able to on the web app for example or on a modded client like Vesktop. perhaps there's something happening on my end, which i'll have to check later

What´s the current list of apps known to be compatible with Second System?

Non-exhaustively, the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox and Edge work, along with most if not all Qt 6.10+ applications. A few applications including PCSX2 work in D3D12 mode and I believe the latest (or at least late 2025 versions) of BeamNG.drive work as well. The latest version of Steam works, the official Discord app works on Windows 7 and above (although there may be some voice chatting issues on Windows 7 specifically at this time), the latest version of Python works as well...

I have since confirmed that an update to Discord changed its usage of mmdevapi and I have now updated Second System to adjust for that. I am making further changes to the DLL to run Spotify audio so it should be futureproofed against additional changes by Discord.
