I am not really seeing the connection here and I have been a comic fan since the 1960's.

More of a half-joking blind guess than anything. I want to say "smash" came into use in the last ten years. Connecting it to Hulk is just fun, but he was also mainstream in the 70's/80's. If it was the source, it could have happened then, but didn't.
