I'm working on a new story, and we are going to break up the changes again into separate options once more. What types of changes do you like to see in a tg/tf story? Select the TOP 3 that you like the most. I'll work off the list going down the options as the story goes.

(I'm going to assume Gender is #1 and will NOT include it in the poll.)

Mental change wise I mean that depending on what they wear or do they might change their personality

roseleaf

That makes sense. I personally am not a big fan of identity death in a story. Are there types of things you like seeing a compulsion or new like?

Dilwati

Mental changes: when they are a bit forced on the subject and there’s a struggle against the inevitable outcome

cody sevens

It doesn't have to be identity death entirely like the person is conscious of them acting different

roseleaf

bit of them attempting to fight back and failing? :)

Sam Mann

Mental Change: Helping them be honest with themselves to change for the better

Czarzhan

A mental change in which there is an internal conversation/hallucination between the original and the changed version. Or even a three-way conversation between pre-gender change, immediately-post-gender change, and the final version, coming to grips with her new self.

Czarzhan

After writing that, I realize Sturk did that with Gilded Zephyr recently so, maybe not...

A.I.A

Intelligence and Ethnicity because I kind of like the change of power dynamics they bring to the table – someone intelligent suddenly growing dimmer, or a white person having to figure out how to face prejudice (and vice-versa obviously). Plus, I feel like they are drastic changes that still manage to remain true to the original characters : intelligence doesn't directly affect their personality, and Ethnicity shifts their appearance, while maintaining their core physical characteristics.

Ken Dahl

Intelligence (one of my choices) - I am not sure this fits into that category but the intelligence or maturity increase inversely (to age or changing age?) so that there is a growing frustration with being viewed as younger/less capable but is actually more capable than those discriminating against them.

Alexander Neu

I love changes in the accent or in the way someone talks. Especially with a twist rather rarely used. The words would essentially be filtered on their way from the brain to the mouth. So the victim would know what he wants to say, but it comes out modified in some way. In another language or maybe in a completely different meaning. Or when he uses a curseword, it is replaced with a compliment. Also speech restrictions can be fun, like "Everytime you try to say a word longer than 4 syllables it gets garbled" so the victim has to rely on very small words.

roseleaf

It's a fun idea, and I'd be down for exploring it as well. But not a fit for this story.

roseleaf

I do really like that stuff. I've flirted with some aspects of it, but for whatever reason, rarely point out when it's going on. One version of Harper couldn't curse. Steph and Lexi have various unstated restrictions on their vocabulary. Neither of them can say 'vocabulary'. lol

roseleaf

That is fun to see. Especially when younger, and having more knowledge and experience, but people treating otherwise.

roseleaf

I'll agree. Letting them deal with a struggle while still being themselves.

roseleaf

A rather sweet suggestion. :)

Lord Taitos

It’s less specific changes and more ‘significant’ changes. For example, going from 20 to 18 years old isn’t a significant change, but going to 14 or 16 would be. I love age changes, but I hate it when that change is then basically irrelevant. The same goes with the other categories- a major height change is very interesting, just changing to become a new average is dull.

roseleaf

That makes sense. You want to do the age change across some barrier that would cause them to be treated differently.

Steve

I play with the Poe AI and messing with ones speech patterns with an AI bot works very well and is awesome to read. I prefer the mental aspect to remain untouched but leaving one to deal with twisted vowel sounds, loss of a letter, complex sentences, or multi syllable vocabulary

roseleaf

Like not changing the personality, but how they are able to express themselves?

Alexander Neu

Yeah, exactly. It is an interesting dynamic to see the character trying to work around certain limitations, or be annoyed by them or whatever instead of feeling comfortable/normal with them because they have become part of their actual self/personality. Easiest example is: becoming actually dumber or only talking like an "airhead"-stereotype, changing how the world around you perceives you, but not being that actually.

roseleaf

I'll have to lean into that more in general. When I can I try to point Steph's language limitations.

Halima Abdi

I'd prefer mental changes, but the kind that are empowering or elevating. I prefer the dynamics of mtf where they end up becoming powerful, beautiful women. But thats a minority, I get it.

roseleaf

Maybe the minority, but not alone. And important to explore as well. While I'm going to use the results specifically for this next short story, I'm going to use the overview and comments to just get a vibe and inform things for the future.

Age(Older): It's rare to find tg stories where a character is changed into an elderly person and the ones I do find, they don't explore it. The only time I recall it happening was in an Alec Baldwin Movie with Meg Ryan, Prelude to a Kiss but most of it sidelined the old character from what I remember. But it'd be a place to explore the path of one's life too. Ethnicity: I would think this is another one as it changes internal identity as well and can be a place for existential questions. But also while I guess racism is a place to explore, I would add maybe realizing other cultures and finding their perspective open up to new values. Also I don't see a lot of race changes into desis. Most seem to go for White to East Asian or White to Latina. Most of all though, I wish there were more empowering changes that made them feel at home with themselves as women. Additionally, I wish there was more substance in romances; I'm always down for for friends to lovers(absolute favorite when it come to tg romances) but also would like to see romances with a rival, a person they dislike at first, or even someone they thought they'd never end up with. Or even pretending to date but fall for real. And not to sound like a prude but while I do like erotic scenes, I want more of the romantic stuff like certain gestures, banter, and maybe the grand ones too but even doing an activity together and having fun.

Rag345

That! I think it's something I'd want to see more of too but also getting a chance to be the woman they want to be or the one they didn't realize they wanted before.

roseleaf

I also haven't really seen much that goes into older in a way that I've been able to connect to. It tends to lean into more of a punishment than even I am comfortable, or they don't really do anything with it. But I'm always down for looking into stories that people like to learn and connect to more ideas. I'd like more exploration of ethnicity changes. I will say it is difficult when the writer isn't familiar with the culture. Either a ton of research to try to do things the best they can, or they don't care and it's a bunch of tropes bordering on racist or oversimpliying complicated issues. Romance needs to be first before sexy times. It makes the story earn the sexy times more and makes those scenes better and more narratively interesting. I know people love the rivals/enemies to lovers trope and there is a lot of people pushing to Stephanie and Lexi to be together. An options I would say was entirely impossible. But after writing the next 3 pages, it's actually possible now.

roseleaf

I'll have to revisit a story I pitched a while ago that was down that road. It was rejected for reasons, but think it can work.

Titania

Mental changes, particularly in their preferences, how they communicate, and how they see things. I particularly like the idea of the conflict between the new traits feeling natural and the subject being aware that they are different and squaring those changes with their original sense of self. I like the idea of the transformee stepping into being a new person or gaining a natural insight into an existing person they have become without identity death.

roseleaf

conflict with the new and old self is always fun to do. Especially with comminication.

Titania

Or with major lifestyle shifts. Like a young meathead jock becoming an older, sophisticated woman and trying but failing to enjoy the football game but enjoying the view of the athletes tight pants 😂

Smartkittykhan

I'd like to see more along the lines of detrimental mental changes. We've had elements of it already with Steph's social anxiety and language barrier but I mean more like losing access to skills and knowledge/education. Becoming less intelligent, less capable. Not so much giving them new problems like Steph and Gwen had to deal with as losing the attributes that would have helped with their current problems.

roseleaf

Makes a lot of sense, and making it harder for them to figure a way out.

IvyReed

I particularly like mental changes in terms of appetites, how they dress, where they like to go, the athletic... call it an addiction.

IvyReed

Getting weaker would be even more amusing if it was paired with a "body builder" trait of some kind I must lift weights, but can't even lift a gallon of milk!

bss

For Mental Changes I enjoy compulsions the character struggles with, similar to what was done to Harper Kelly.

Rag345

The only times I've seen it done is like Sophie in Howl's Moving Castle but it was sort of punishment mixed with a epiphany she was supposed to realize and then there was Mack and Rita where the main character wanted to be an old lady her whole life. But yeah, I would wish there are some stories that deal with getting older in middle age or even elderly. Definitely some untapped potential there. I'd further add maybe some ethnicity changes from a person being monoracial to becoming biracial or multiracial, something I don't see a lot of ever. But yeah, I think there's research you'd have to do for any ethnicity change regardless. As long as you know what it is racist, at least you know what to avoid. Definitely, development make a romance work overall and even some buildup helps before the sexy times. It's one of the biggest tropes out there aside from friends to lovers. I didn't realize they would be possible before but it's not a bad idea.
