Milo and Young-Mi are on their way out of the offices with a latest trade completed and still some adjustment and concerns showing.

Czarzhan

Well, yeah. The knowledge had to come from somewhere.

roseleaf

She just didn't realize how gendered it would be. :) Oops.

TrueRonin88

I love the twist of how even in the description of update you are calling her Young-Mi now instead of Stephanie. As with that trade she really is Young-Mi. It would even be cooler if you added Young-Mi Hwang as a tag for these parts

roseleaf

I'll make the correction so Young-mi is saying the correct word. :)

roseleaf

Sadly it wouldn't match the other tags and could cause issues.

TrueRonin88

I think it is fine as is. Manwha would assume she was reading manwha and not manga growing up as Wyatt. If you really want to say it then I think say Japanese Manwha, like if someone who speaks English were to call manga Japanese comics

roseleaf

I was going with the idea that Young-mi was trying to say "comic books" and said the local media name instead.

TrueRonin88

Never mind. I saw milo say comics. Changing it to manwha makes more sense now

Korean girl I’ve always been… Does Steph remember her old self anymore?

roseleaf

Yes. The previous page is still valid. She remembers and knows who she is. But more that all this new info is right at the tip of her tongue and her reflex. It's why she didn't immediately notice that she's saying the wrong words. She knows the right words, but isn't saying them.

Natalia

This is really stretching the boundaries of what makes an individual an individual! Exciting! I didn’t think *memories* themselves would travel but I guess I should’ve! For whatever reason this doesn’t give me any existential horror vibes like the “Flowers for Algernon”-esque stuff does, lol.

roseleaf

Ok, I see what I did to trigger panic. I'll probably rewrite that one panel. I know the dread of Flowers for Algernon, and I here I don't think we hit is because we do a lot of reminders that Steph still knows who she is. Even on this page. She knows what media she likes. But the cultural word she used for is different.

Halima Abdi

Interesting.. And dont worry, I'm totally into that shit, lets Theseus ship this ex-white boy turned tall Korean lady!

Halima Abdi

The thing is, I'm actually hoping for the mental changes. I dont see anything horrific in whats happening, if anything its freeing for Stephanie for all her personality traits, experiences, and memories to 'line up', so to speak

roseleaf

I'm not backing off the mental stuff, just clarifying. There is a thing I do when I get notes from the editor, where I'll see a comment that I didn't expect. My reaction isn't to just do the edit, but try to figure out why I'm getting the reaction or the comment. I think I leaned too much into "memories". I can do the same panel with all the same info, but adjust it that she has the knowledge, but not the memories. "Memories" does too much to contradict the previous page. But still when she's not thinking about it, she defaults to Korean behavior and culture. But I don't want it to seem like she lost memories. Yes it's less horrific if she doesn't lose memories, but more important to me is that if she lost memories it makes it harder for the plot and her motivation, because she wouldn't know why she's doing something.

Natalia

To clarify, I still liked it. I wasn’t being ironic I genuinely thought it was exciting. But I do see what you mean about conflicted character motivations. I don’t think changing it from “I remember” to “I know” changes too much. Looking forward to seeing how this resolves!

roseleaf

Don't worry, it wasn't you. There were like 5 different people with similar comments (excited or scared). You happened to be the latest one that made me go back and reread.

Natalia

Wow yeah, “Ship of Theseus, the person” is an interesting concept
