You can see where this starts to go wrong - 1st time spell caster = Oops!

Czarzhan

She didn't say she never cast *any* spells before. Just that she learned this one for this circumstance.

Czarzhan

Of course, other unknown factors could (and probably will) come into play. Mercedes could be a nascent mage and not know it, unconsciously maintaining or reactivating the spell at inconvenient times, for example...

roseleaf

Never good to be the first of something like that. Although, she does seem to dodge the question.

Ampws

The way I read the previous panel it sounded as if she only read THAT spell, it didn't sound as if she knew any OTHER magic. She sounds as if she has only studied that spell.

Ampws

Hmm, very possible.

I like the logic there.. Then again.. my mind is also jumping to the legal ramifications in a universe where magic is real.. May be I need to lay off the Antia Blake, Jim Butcher.. James Butcher books..

roseleaf

Yeah, but I like the Dresden Files. :)

Joe Markese

Who dosn't.. But should my frist thought be the Rules of magic and how they apply to humanity as a whole? Or that changing some one with out there permission Viloates the rules of hostility and magic, not to mention there civil right?

Joe Markese

OR.. That I hope Ebenezer never find out.

Joe Markese

Oh yeaaaah... that reverse spell always get you. Or what if its more of a curse then a spell? Ever meeting is timed so that it conensigns consignment with the change?

roseleaf

Sometimes we just can't help but wonder about the rules. There are some rules that are set. She's breaking at least one of them, maybe. It's a bit of an edge case. But she would be more in trouble for exposing more people to magic, then violating someone's rights. But that's more because the witches council is very old and happy to curse people turn people into frogs,

Joe Markese

Ah!! contaxt!! Sweet sweet juice context!

roseleaf

It helps sometimes. And I know with several of these stories, the reader is intentionally starting off with none of the rules. Largely because the characters don't know the rules. Or because they will be explained as we go. Marc/Mercedes doesn't know what is going on or how this exact spell works. And we'll all discover that together. Because I've done like 3 or 4 stories now starting everyone out without knowing the rules and trying to figure them out, I think it is entirely natural to be prompted to ask if what she did is against the rules, or well, more magic illegal.

I'm surprised there wasn't a mirror she could take a look at herself while there or even her phone. But also a 1st time casting of that spell does imply some major inexperience and consequences.

Debbie isn't a menace; she just believes that women care more about children.

roseleaf

Debbie has some opinions about the world

roseleaf

Deb didn't really do anything to make this easier for Mercedes.
