Stephanie has a bunch of new rules to deal with. How is she going to move forward when they take effect.

If people don't have to trade back with Steph, who is going to keep their traits and who will return them?

Meant copying instead of coping right?

David Willette

They made these choices knowing the consequences of it only to have the consequences change half way through like jumping over a river only to have the river turn into a canyon mid jump

Sam Mann

This...is a nightmare.

punarotta

Legally - can that affect older trades? ...or is this something that has already been in place but they were unaware?

Halima Abdi

Obviously these laws are completely beyond the pale, in terms of morality and good legal sense. But then again, this does take place in the United States, so why expect anything less?

Halima Abdi

And the jump theoretically being infinite if the rentee decides to squat on the trade…

Alex Smyth

The new rule about temporary trades is bad legally and morally. With that rule, somebody could just keep renewing the trade for as long as possible, if not forever, essentially holding someone else's trait hostage, so to speak, and turning a temporary trade into a semi-permanent trade. That's not fair to the other person who only wanted to trade away their trait(s) and get someone else's temporarily. Hopefully and understandably, they'll be backlash against these new rules, which I hope happens in the comic. And if they do go through with these new rules, then they should allow people to get their traits back, if they no longer want to participate under these new rules. That, I think, would make the most sense legally.

Alex Smyth

"If people don't have to trade back with Steph, who is going to keep their traits and who will return them?" Who is going to keep their traits? How about none of them? They have no right to keep those traits, since the trade was done under the impression of being temporary. Those people would be quite horrible for doing that. I think, legally, any temporary trades done before the new rules should still be regulated under the old rules. Meaning that at the end of the year, the Wyatt's/Stephanie's trades should all be reversed, as originally planned.

Well, that's a blasted puzzle. Alex has a point though, this would be legal quagmire. I'll say this is probably more a political kneejerk reaction than anything else. There's no way legislation about this has been implemented so swiflty. I think it's more that the politicians are being pressured and want to be seen doing something about the issue.

In the US, a law cannot hold someone responsible for actions that happened before the law is put into place.

roseleaf

It's a very USA action to take.

roseleaf

And with it being in reaction to a very public event with a stream who is getting more and more popular. Public is going to have some loud opinions about this.

Czarzhan

Yeah, I smell lawsuit. At least to allow trades previous to these changes to be grandfathered in with the old rules

roseleaf

It's not putting our hero in a good place.

Ravyn

That becomes a fascinating view of personal rights and it would not be shocking that laws would be very slow to catch up. For your story it makes sense, However almost every law would be from this point moving forward, any active trades would be grandfathered to not do that would be massive lawsuits.

Natalia

From a reactionary congressional prospective, I can understand the 1 per month limit, it’s a simple “slow down” rule. But what’s even the rationale behind the “temporary” trade rules being changed? Just to screw over Stephanie specifically? If anything I think people upset by the “Wyatt to Stephanie” internet event would make it *harder to keep* a traded trait, not *easier* This is basically allowing single party consent permanent trait transferral. It seems like the opposite of what they’re upset about.

Natalia

Pressured by what though? That people should get to convert a temp trade deal to permanent just if they happen to want to? That seems like the opposite of what people would be worried about.

Smartkittykhan

Pressured by the public, obviously. Also don't underestimate a career politician's abillity to completely miss the point of the inciting event behind the laws they're supporting.

Halima Abdi

I think it's about killing off the trades market by making it legally impossible for the market to function? That seems to be the intended effect.

roseleaf

We'll get a little bit more of the motivation why in coming pages.

roseleaf

She *should* be grandfathered in.

roseleaf

I'll agree. There is no way the US congress could move this fast. They suck at speed. But Jocelyn didn't say it was a law.

roseleaf

I'll safey say based on the reason many of the people traded with Stephanie in the first place, that many did go into this with the idea of it being temporary. Most of them are expecting to get them back.

Lisa Thomas

At this point I'm surprised we haven't seen a team of lawyers solicitating to protect Stephanie.

roseleaf

There are definitely some activists on Steph’s side.
