The other half of Stephanie's phone call with the mother of a person she traded with.

Do I have anything clever to add after this phone call? What abilities does this mystery woman have? Is she just overly confident and wants to get her way? Who knows.

Sounds perfectly rational, given the cultural norms.

Seems to fit across cultures for many moms.

I mean, when you consider that in Korea you aren’t even supposed to be friends with anyone older or younger than you, a reaction like this makes sense. My wife’s student, a South Korean native here for a couple years, let us know about the very regimented structure of their society. So much so, that when we go to visit her back in SK, we have to make sure to not be “too friendly” with her and her husband as we are technically their “elders.” For that dude to turn his back on his cultural identity is basically social suicide, given that it sounds like his family is very traditional.

Always good to know. Sucks that everyone needs to stay in their lane.

Rockhopper

That’s not to say that western influences don’t make their way into their culture. Ahee’s parents are very progressive (as she was from a large city) while Hoon’s parent are far more traditional as he grew up in the sticks. Also, their mindset is far more set to conformity, and not to stand out as an individual, which is really an American invention.

Smartkittykhan

I did not know any of that. Interesting to see how the culture clash factors into the ethnicity swap.

If she were to go to Korea, Steph would have a very rough lesson.

If you want to hear about something truly wild, read about the Suneung. The WHOLE COUNTRY shuts down - so students can take a college entrance exam.

My teacher friend never mentioned it, but we also never did the deep dive, and it seemed like most of her social circle was other western teachers. So easy for her to miss out on a bunch of things. America is very 'ruggid invididualism' as the baseline. But as individuals, I always feel every option is always there inside a culture.

What do you wanna bet that Steph’s family would more readily accept Nick than Steph for similar reasons? People are weird

Just do a swap! Adult adoptions are a thing, ya know...

Natalia

Can a trade happen that leaves Nick stuck with both of them? Lol 🙄

New in-world reality show: Family Swap

Smartkittykhan

"Think there couldn't possibe be a worse family than yours? Well, get ready folks!"

roseleaf

Ratings are high, but no one wants to be on the show.

Rockhopper

Think that’s crazy? Imagine what a show like “Naked Attraction” would turn into…

roseleaf

I'm sure there is some producer watching Steph and Lexi and then pitching a show "Build your Perfect Date", or letting someone change themselves to date their dream person. Very unhealthy ideas.

Rockhopper

Sigh. I’d probably end up watching it going “why am I watching this?” the whole time. But then, hostess Lexi would come back on screen and I nod and say “okay, just five more minutes….”
