While trying to catch a wild Tentacruel at the beach, Nessa was instead defeated and captured inside a Poké Ball. The Tentacruel was kind enough to send her to the Pokémon Center for treatment. While treatment for Pokémon at the Pokémon Center is free, as a human receiving treatment there, Nessa had to pay a massive medical bill. Short on cash, Nessa had no choice but to work part-time at the Pokémon Center to earn the money.
