This episode (and Avatar in general) is very interesting in terms of walking the line of what a kids show can display. Corrupt government using brainwashing, blackmail and emotional manipulation? Sure, let 'em have it. Unambiguous confirmation of a teenager's death? NO that is too much, make it vague.

This show is just a work of pure art <3 I do love the depth - in the previous episode, we see there are some good people in the Fire Nation, and of course in Ba Sing Se, we see there are some awful people in the Earth Kingdom. At least the GAang is back together.

This show does a great job of balancing serious themes while inserting cartoony fun. Aang's outburst at Joo Dee was just the right amount of silly humor without undercutting the dramatic tension. Not many shows pull that off. But ATLA excels at it.
