My dad took 10 year old me to see this movie in theatres in '95. i didnt know anything about space flight before seeing this and when we were walking out of the theater i knew i wanted to be astronaut when i grew up!!! funny how this movie did that to me, right!!! im so glad you finally reacted to this. ive probably seen this movie 100 times and i was going through all the same emotions you were going through as well. such a fantastic movie!!! i will admit though, this movie does Swigert (Kevin Bacon) a little dirty. they portray him as unprepared and possibly a little incompetent when in reality Swigert was fully prepared and 110% competent for this mission. if there was any doubt in Swigert, NASA would have never launched!!! with that aside this movie is a solid 10/10. FUN FACT: the real Jim and Marilyn Lovell have cameos in this movie. Marilyn is in the stands as an audience member watching the launch. Jim is the Naval Officer shaking Tom Hanks' hand and patting him on the back after Apollo 13 was recovered. i know Jim Lovell has a credit in this movie, im not sure about Marilyn though!!! i had so much fun with this, cant wait for more reactions. Speaking of reactions, there is this movie entitled First Man starring Ryan Gosling has Neil Armstrong!!! i really loved this movie and i think that if you enjoyed Apollo 13 that you might enjoy this one as well. i think that people these days do not understand how much of a legendary badass Neil Armstrong is and this movie forces you to realize that fact. hope you consider it!!!

The weightlessness scenes are so seamless. It looks like they really went up in space to shoot this. And I love how they intercut the real archival news coverage into the movie. Just makes it feel all that more legit. Also, I love seeing a bunch of nerds doing math to save lives. And those computers on those old spacecraft were crazy primitive. It's still mind-blowing that they were able to do what they did with what they had back then.

Only tangentially connected to the movie, but years later (but shortly after the movie came out) I had the opportunity to take a cooking class at the local public library taught by James Lovell III (the son at military school). As a space geek it was really fun to not only cook with him but hear him tell the story from his POV,

What an interesting experiment you've created, watching this not knowing whether or not the events were real or fictional. It seemed like it made the movie very tense for you. I wonder if you knew the events were real, you might of been a little more relaxed. There is a company that does the parabolic curves to experience weightlessness called Zero G. They can also simulate moon's gravity. One thing that I find amazing is that we went from first flight in 1903 to the moon in just 66 years. I would love to see somebody walk on the moon in my life time.
