Just finished, great reaction! It's interesting that you had a hard time watching it since I think it's mostly seen as a dark comedy nowadays. I find it funny as well, mainly due to Bale's great performance, but I've also seen it loads of times now, I don't really remember how I specifically felt on my first viewing.

Hi Shanelle. I'm sorry this one was so difficult for you. I prefer the opposite interpretation that none of it happened for a couple of reasons. First, if you take it all literally, it's extremely disturbing and not very enjoyable at all. Having read the book, I know that this story was not an examination on our obsession with serial killers, but a satirical, over-the-top commentary on a lifestyle of excess in the late 80s. I remember being uncomfortable the first time watching also, but have since seen it a couple of dozen times and now find myself laughing out loud at the dialogue. It's much more enjoyable if not taken seriously. I know you have to get through this again in editing, so maybe try looking at it as a comedy the second time through, and see if that helps anything. The clues become more clear when the chainsaw drops, as events continue to become more implausible. He wouldn't have timed that so perfectly, and no one comes outside to investigate. Then, we have the ATM scene with the cat and the police cars exploding. Earlier, he "confesses" his illness at least 3 times, and no one hears him, and the trail of blood behind the overnight bag isn't noticed by anyone and completely vanishes once we get outside. The detective never seems to really suspect him (even though Defoe played it both ways when filming). His lawyer also wasn't delivering his lines as if he might be mistaken. He seems damn certain that Paul is alive and well. He says he had dinner with him Twice in London. This is not someone with whom he is mistaking an identity. This is a person he knows very well. I'll stop there, but I could probably do this for an hour. I think people like to recommend this one to reactors just to hear which interpretation they will have, and if they pick up on any of the incorrect name drops littered throughout the film.

i am totally with you that this movie is unsettling as fuck!!! reality is unclear in this movie. it kind of reminds me of trying to recall something in my own life and struggling to convince myself if a specific event actually happened the way i remembered it. it really messes with you!!! also, how much we see and interact with is just keeping up appearances??? what is the real story behind people and places i wonder??? i gotta return some video tapes!!!

I don't know but for me there's still no video link. Not even a thumbnail. For this or Life of Brian.

Watch it as a satire dark comedy. Also, did you catch when he is in the lobby of the first building (at the end) and the man at the desk asked him to sign in, called him Mr. Smith
