I just read the novel for the first time today on a cruise. Perfect timing for a revisit of the movie!

I was a small child, maybe 3 or 4 when I saw it. My most prized possession in 1986 was a record of the theme song. My main memory of the movie is the overwhelming emotions of it all. Sadness and fear mainly. In a good way though. We watched the hell out of that VHS.

I first saw this movie as kid. I thought I was good movie except for that damn wolf. Oh and the Artax death scene emotionally scarred me for life. As a child the big tits wasn’t a thing, until I a got a few years older and it like holy shit big boobies!! Looking at it now it is an odd place for them, especially given that they are bare. Oh don’t forget they did it twice, once the gate and a second time for the oracle. Anyhow I still absolutely love this movie, for the most part the special effects are pretty good.

Growing up with fantasy movies in the 80s was a blast. "The Never-ending Story", "Labyrinth", "The Dark Crystal", "The Princess Bride", "Conan", "Highlander", "The Goonies".... Couple notes: 1) So many movies are save the world themed - but TNES is an excellent example of what elevates a movie past tired tropes and well worn screenplays. It's themes are deeper and timeless. Interesting, isn't it, that other movies like "Labyrinth" (Sarah grows up but tells Hoggle and everyone else from the Labyrinth that she still needs them), "Dark Crystal" (Power, greed, ugliness and beauty), "Princess Bride" (Life isn't fair, but Love can never be thwarted if it is true) then also have deeper themes if you know where to look. 2) It took me a long time to understand the second gate as a kid 3) Hoth, technically, is a part of Fantasia as Fantasia has no boundaries and is based upon the limits only of your imagination. 4) As a kid and later as a horse owner the Artax swamp scene is always a killer 5) When the Empress explains how Bastian was brought along with Atreyu she says "Just as he was sharing all of your adventures, others were sharing his...They were with him when he hid from the boys in the book store...." which of course by "They" she means of course us,...Shanelle, me and all of our collective audience. Mind Blown. This is the essence of good writing and getting past the basic storyline of saving the world.
