The Dark Crystal

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (do I need to know anything for this type of comedy?)

Robocop

Total Recall

Predator

Timecop

Blade Runner (1982) *just added*

We also chatted about a channel stimulus for a little subscriber boost what do we think of RRR?

Wasn’t able to make the live, but I wanted to recommend a couple of my favorites: The Equalizer (2014) and 13 Hours: The Secret Soliders of Benghazi (2016)

There are two films that I've been wanting reactors to cover. Both from 1991 and they are "JFK" and "My Own Private Idaho". I'll let someone else comment on the rest!

HHGTG works fine if you know nothing about it. I don't want to say too much about it being quite a fan of Adams's work. :)

Elliot Nesterman

Gattaca is one of the finest hard science fiction films of recent decades. Great cast, engaging story, a dramatic thriller. If you watch The Hitchhikers Guide, watch the BBC TV series. The film is an overblown, turgid mess. The spare quality of the BBC series suits the material much better than the big-budget remake. Whereas the show is quick and witty the movie plods along, just so the director can showcase the special effects. The Dark Crystal is delightful. It is fantasy, however, not science fiction.

Top 6- Donnie Darko, Dark Crystal, Total Recall, Predator, Minority Report (though I stopped watching Tom Cruise movies-this is awesome) and Last Starfighter (nostalgia, but unsure it stands the test of time). The rest….meh.

Paul Cox

Not loving most of these, but I remember the theory in the chat was that balancing genre and clicks was necessary. That being said, Robocop, Total Recall, and Predator will be safe bets (especially when there's a sponsor). RRR will too, but that's not really germane to the sci-fi discussion. It's just an awesome movie that we're pretty sure you'd love that would also get a bunch of people to click (and hopefully stay) on the channel. My algorithm-be-damned pick is Donnie Darko. It's a cult film for sure, and do not expect all your questions to be answered at the end. They won't be lol.

Paul Cox

Sad to see Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 didn't make it to the shortlist. The original (in its "Final Cut" iteration) is one of my favorite sci-fi films ever made (Ridley!!!), and its sequel is a magnificent bookend (Denis!!!).

Roger Freeman

Predator is the best by far. Last Starfighter would be my 2nd

Christopher Mitchell

The dark crystal, robocop, predator, timecop, minority report would all do well on your channel but I would say total recall will probably live well the most on your channel because apart from being a great movie, people can see where you got your idea from for your 3 residual boulders t-shirt 😉😆. As for the rest I haven't seen them.

Most of these movies get a lot of requests on a lot of channels. Predator, Minority, Total and Robocop are guarantees. Starfighter, Gattaca, Darko should also do well considering your GenX audience. Personally Dark Crystal bored me as a kid and bored me again as an adult. RRR is most likely to get you some new foreign viewers...at least for that film.

Ethan Wallace

Predator, Robocop, Total Recall, and The Dark Crystal will live well on your channel I feel, while The Last Starfighter is great for filmmaking and fun (though sadly underrated through the years.) I also love Minority Report and Timecop.

Caren Helms

Just commenting that I loved RRR and love Indian cinema in general. It can be tough at times to find subtitled films, but many great ones are available.

Rob Howard

I would prirotitize Starfighter, The Dark Crystal (which has a stunning soundtrack btw) and Robocop. The other movies however will do very well on your channel (especially Donnie Darko). Just not MY particular cup o tea. Great choices!

Shawn Goforth

I will give a third vote for JFK. It's probably in my top ten all-time...if you can find a copy to view. It's not easily found streaming.

Shawn Goforth

My top picks from this list would be Robocop and Total Recall, then I suppose Predator. I love 80s Arnold movies, but the more I see Predator reactions, the more I realize there isn't a lot of reacting going on throughout the movie. It does get the clicks though. I actually saw Last Starfighter for the first time last year and enjoyed it, but it is definitely a deep cut selection for the genre. Fair warning...it's a gamer movie. I've never seen The Dark Crystal either, but I'd watch it with you guys, for sure.

Lars G

I love Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and no you don't need to know anything about it. Maybe if you're looking for something sillier, it's perfect.

Scot Jebens

It looks like Dune (2021) is somehow missing from this list… :)

Scot Jebens

Upon further inspection, I see that another Denis Villeneuve film is missing - Arrival!

Scot Jebens

I tried searching on YouTube but couldn’t find anything. Is there a list somewhere? Apologies, I’m new here.

Paul Cox

I don't think so, no. But she's mentioned having seen it (and loving it) in past livestreams.

Scot Jebens

If it’s not to late for suggestions… Thought provoking Dune (dir. Denis Villeneuve) Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac * Blade Runner: 2049 (dir. Scot Jebens

I’ll take it as a kind of compliment that you personally chose to see some of my favorite movies already!

My Ex Boyfriend

You mentioned in the live you have two sponsors video to do this month. I would highly recommend Minority Report and predator for those. They should do quite well numbers wise and don’t fall into a cult class film. Now for your channel boost, you should do Lord of the Rings. I think you are going really like the cinematography especially around the force perspective shots. There is a surprising amount of practical effects used, along with CGI of course. I watched Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy without any previous knowledge and enjoyed the movie.

Reef

I was 9 in '94 when I first saw 'Timecop'; to this day, I still wear Wolverine boots because of Max Walker.

Christopher Mitchell

Some suggestions for your si-fi month shanelle : demolition man (sly Stallone), Outland (Sean Connery), Life (jake gyllenhaal) and spoof si-fi comedy spaceballs (directed by Mel Brooks and starring Bill Pullman, Rick moranis and John candy). Also you mention at the end of your videos "epidemic music" well you should check out a guy called "Hampus Naeselius" his epidemic music is really good.

Paul Cox

Since you've added it to the shortlist, that's obvs my #1 suggestion now lol As for Donnie Darko, I do feel like it's a Shanelle type of movie. Weird in unpredictable ways, set in high school, but there's a lot of ambiguity in it and I know how much you appreciate formula. Very little formula to be found here.

Bill W

Tron (1982; Jeff Bridges) Logan's Run (1975; Michael York) Runaway (1984; Tom Selleck, Gene Simmons) War of the Worlds (1953; Gene Barry) Superman (1978; Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman) Superman II (1980; Christopher Reeve) 1984 (1984; John Hurt) Equilibrium (2002; Christian Bale, Taye Diggs, Emily Watson) Demolition Man (1993; Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock) The Wild Wild West (1999; Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Salma Hayek)

Christopher Mitchell

I see that you've just added blade runner to your list, it's a good movie but the soundtrack by vangelis is better.

Cody ray

Late to the the party. But all the movies listed are fun films. Loved Robocop as a kid, as an adult the violence is over the top 😂. You have so many movie options mentioned so I will name one quick film try the movie so close, Japanese film about assassin sisters. It’s fun! Have a wonderful day.

Chris Bruneau

Shan, if you watch Blade Runner, you must follow it up with the sequel- BR 2049. Both are film masterpieces. the 1982 film was directed by Ridley Scott and is considered so ground-breaking, so ahead of its time, its just F*&^ing amazing!!!

Paul Cox

Agreed! The first film is a lot to process, and if it's still fresh in your mind when watching the sequel it will be a more rewarding experience. (And several of us have clarified this probably to the point of annoyance, but Shan if/when you watch Blade Runner make sure it's "The Final Cut.")

Paul Cox

The Final Cut is the version on most services, but the theatrical cut is also out there, so don't grab it by mistake. :)

Paul Cox

(If you start watching it and you hear Harrison Ford doing cheesy narration/voice overs, you've got the theatrical cut. No good!)

Paul Cox

Oh no, looks like O.G. Blade Runner is down on YT. :(

Paul Cox

Just finished the 2049 reaction. It didn't feel noticeably chopped up to me, so if "harsher" editing will keep your uploads monetized, then absolutely do it that way. No complaints!
