The man vanishing between the shadows in the first panel is Phan's father. Later on the chapter there will be an important flashback about that matter.

PS: I know the story has been grew a bit ponderous lately. At its core, Lush Puppies is a drama, and it needs some slow pase to show some character development in a more natural way.

No complaints on the pacing. Smut is great but personally I love a deep story with adult aspects naturally included, or a more sexual world. I think this is a great mix of both.
