Hey Everyone,

Hope that you're all doing well, or at least the best you could possibly hope to be with the state of the world at the moment. I've definitely been frustrated with what's happening with the US and how generally it feels so futile that I, a singular person, cannot change everything for the better instantly, and also I know that things will probably not improve much until the midterms happen. But I'm trying to focus on what I can control and help with, especially in my communities locally. There is nothing stronger than forming friendships and bonds with people in your city and community, even as small as having a shop or restaurant owner recognize you daily (I love my local halal cart guy).

And on that note, I've been deeply considering running for office here, for two reasons.First, I've generally been frustrated with the channel for the last 1.5yrs, as much as I know that I have produced some decent videos during that time, the direction often felt meaningless. Though this is not an uncommon thought to have with any job, it's felt extra rough being a freelance creator and someone who generally works alone. So whenever something bad or disruptive happens in my life it definitely derails my work & progress more than it would if I was working with others on a team.Secondly, politics, and specifically holding a political office always felt like the end game for me. I love making my city, community and neighborhoods better, and being able to shape that from the inside is the ultimate way to fix the problems. And with that I've been looking at a few local races in Philly to run in, so not to spoil anything yet, but I have my eye on one state election specifically.

If I were to run, win, and hold this office, I would definitely try to run for a higher more important office within 3-4ish years. So, what's your opinion, should I do it? The deadline to file for this race is February 15th, and I've already start thinking/writing a possible video that I could do to launch the whole campaign. If this doesn't work out I do have other video plans, both for the channel and career related things.

So if you've read this far, know that I'm still working on the other videos currently, both the "Boomer City" video as I'm calling it, and the UPNS video. And by the way, I've been starting to make shorts again, so you'll soon see those on my tiktok, second channel and possibly instagram.

I'm incredibly grateful for your support, and I wish I could do more for the channel and this patreon always, especially since the "world events" have been disruptive to my mental state to say the least. Also enjoy the artwork above that I shot on expired film using my Minolta 7000 from last summer.

Cheers,Alan

Please, Alan, run for office. We need more people like you in control of the world, and sooner than later. Just promise you won't appeal to the racist middle; bring at least as much fervor to what you do as the dingaling from Indiana PA brings his. I'm pretty certain you stand a good chance at out-AOCing AOC.

I'm gonna be getting my master's in public administration next year, maybe our paths would cross there!

Go for it. I am dealing with the same thoughts and emotions so I keep diving further and further into transit volunteers efforts, joining the board of a local transit group to grow and build that, really doing whatever I can locally while supporting my coworkers and their work in any way I can.

Brother, if you run for the PA legislature, I will be happy to be a recurring donor to the campaign and encourage other Pittsburgh urbanists to do the same

Brother ever since you floated this idea I've been holding out hope that you would take running for office, particularly in my city Philadelphia - either for a city council position, mayor, or for the state legislature. I'd be excited to vote for you. Everyone talks about who will be Philly's "Zohran" and I think you can fit that mold. I know that's not an easy decision to make but I think you'd be great. I know I've had to take a break from social media apps for the time being because things just feel so bad and so exhausting. It feels so difficult to find joy even in the little things that bring me the most joy - like trains and transit. It feels futile. But we need passionate people who aren't going to back down from a fight now more than ever.

Hey Alan, As someone who worked on a city council, albeit in Germany and not the US, local politics can be a frustrating endeavor. A friend of mine is a borough mayor, and the best advice he gave me is to be resilient. The problem for me is that if you truly love a city and your heart goes into a project and it fails, there is not much that feels more devastating - as it brings joy if it succeeds. Be aware of your mental health is what I am saying :) Nonetheless, you should run, maybe as a city council member - as I experienced it, the higher up you get, the more ruthless people will be. Wish you the best.
