Creating a Monster: Golem (Patreon)
Content
This is the first in the series of process showcases on the *many* figures I have turned into my own creations using a combination of acrylic paint, aluminum foil, toilet paper and found objects.
I wound up using 5-inches as the standard height for these actor figures, so the 7" Fantastic Four member stands out as giant-sized. Sticking with the theme of silent/ b&w movie monsters from the start of this project, the choice for how to adapt The Thing became pretty obvious. To start I needed to add a mantlepiece, so I built up his forehead gradually with foil.
As per usual, I paint the figure with a grey primer. This helps me when photographing a scene to quickly and easily guage how the values interact with one another, as well as let me effectively use lights and shadows to my advantage. Afterwards I just go over with a more painterly set of highlights and tints to create an unnatural, expressionist style. I *want* the brush strokes to show thick and fast.
The last step is yet to come, as I will soon scribble details over top the paints with brish pens to get even more definition, and built up any details that are lost in my heavy-handed paints.
