Thank you all for the sweet comments, I'm working hard on the next pages. I'll keep Grave's passage here so we can look back on it in the future.
Grave
“After I got out of the military, it was really hard to resist drugs and alcohol as an escape from the inner chaos. The smallest sound, smell, or imagery could have sent me spiraling back in time to a fucked up moment, and I could've relived it for years. I tried talking to a psychiatrist and it helped a bit with coping, but the reality is, they can’t tell you something specific that will make the pain, fear, and anxiety go away. You have to get comfortable with the suffering and find your own healthy ways of dealing with it.
I work out a lot, I play the bass, I cook, I go shooting—which seems strange, but somehow it’s comforting feeling like I’m with my old squad again. Just stay the hell away from drugs and alcohol. Limit junk food and don’t use your laptop for too long. You need to stay tethered to the real world and maintain habits that will serve you in the long run. Don’t ignore your problems and be aware of the paths your life could take, you’re not going to go through this alone. I’ve been through hell and back--I’ll guide you out of it.”
As a story teller, I can understand what he's saying objectively, but implementing it successfully is the hardest part. I'm hoping by the time I get to this point in the story, I can understand more of what it feels like to be in Grave's shoes as a mentor, instead of a lost soul.
