Dear Book Club Readers,

I hope you're keeping well and your reading is going well. And, if you're celebrating it, I would like to wish you a Happy Easter for this weekend too.

Your insights about these great books are always so profound. So I would really like to get your input for content I'm putting together that will lovingly explore and analyse literature's greatest characters.

Who do you think is the best character in literature?

As mentioned in the video above, I would also love to react to your favourite passages in literature, as well as your favourite characters, and share mine with you too.

It will be fascinating to know which protagonists have secured a special place in your heart over the course of your reading.

Questions for You:

1) Who is your personal favourite character of all time? And why?

2) Do your favourite characters have anything in common?

3) What makes a character resonant for you?

4) What is your favourite passage in literature?

Thank you so much for sharing your love of great literature with us.

Happy reading, everybody!

Who is the Greatest Character in Literature? (Your Opinions)

Comments

Jan Mariolle

Kristin Lavransdatter is one of my favorite characters because she is rendered so human and believable. Her story encompasses her entire life, and even extends from before her birth. She wrestled with unwise decisions throughout her life, just as we all do. The evolution of her spirit is deeply moving. Her character connects us to our own longing for grace and forgiveness.

Paul Meunier

I love rogues and ne’r-do-wells. So one of my favorite recent acquaintances is Koroviev. His actions and appearance are absurd, hilarious, vexatious and ultimately evil. I love him! I found both Yeshua and Pilate to be intriguing and would love to have spent time with either of them. The character who has recently moved me the most is Sydney Carton: “Greater Love Hath No Man…”

Pierre from War and Peace and Val from The Women’s Room by Marilyn French

Laura Glismann

Edmond Dantès from THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Phillip of Carey from OF HUMAN BONDAGE. Something about wrongs being addressed and right being served.

Extremely late to this thread but Charles Kinbote/Charles Xavier from Pale Fire. I don't think the work is perfect but the creation of this character throughout the work is hilarious and a masterpiece of literature
