One of the most exciting parts of embarking upon a lifelong reading plan is your ability to weigh and compare authors.

You've met Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky on your journey so far, and you've read them both deeply enough to be qualified to rank and rate them.

The more great writers you encounter and collect on your literary journey, the more gradations of the human spirit you're able to discern.

Ultimately, we're figuring out our personal tastes.

Who do you like?

In this video, I have put Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky up against each other and given them a rating on the following aesthetic dimensions:

1) Characterisation

2) Pacing

3) Language/voice

4) Theme

Play along at home and score them with me.

Let's compare notes.

There are no right or wrong answers. It all comes down to your personal taste.

For me, 1 of the more profound reasons that i believe D is superior to T in his writings, is due to the concept of the polyphonic novel (see Mikhail Bakhtin's, 'The Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics'); and the monumental fleshing out of said concept by Sir 'D' in his novels, viz. each and every character in D's novels - or, at the very least, a significant # of them - has a unique, discrete, autonomous and inviolable voice in which to articulate their ideas and ideologies; whereas, with Tolstoy, the same cannot be said (at least in r/l to intensity and degree)

I am preparing for a read of "Crime and Punishment" in August 2023. I am an advocate of Tolstoy, but am more open to Dostoyevsky. I have both the P&V transation and Katz, who I prefer. I accept that P&V are good, but occasionally their English is obscure or clunky. I love the preparatory work that Ben suggests and am keen to devote time to it. I shall watch to all the videos.
