The Proust Project Lectures have so far covered the first ten pages of In Search of Lost Time.

You are likely to be further into volume one of this sprawling masterpiece than that, and treating the videos as deep rereading opportunities.

So we might think it prudent to take a lay of the literary landscape thus far.

How is everyone doing with Proust?

Let's pause, reflect, and ask ourselves some questions

Proust Check-In Checklist

Logistical Questions:

  • What page are you currently on?
  • What does your reading look like?

Mindful Questions:

  • Do you like Proust? Why? Why not?
  • What's the book about... to you? Objectively?
  • What are the tools of Proust's craft?
  • Is Proust great literature?
  • How does he compare with other writers?
  • Does the work feel true?
  • Is the Search a long term companion?

Feel free to answer in any capacity.

There are no right or wrong responses.

It would be great for readers to see how others are faring with the work, as we all have different valid responses to literature.

Happy Prousting!

Proust Project Check-In - Questions to Reflect Upon

Chrissy

I’m on page 65, and I’ve been reading 2-5 pages each morning, while the sleep is still in my eyes. I realise that I’ve become excited about waking, excited about my morning assignation with Marcel. Occasionally I will wake early (see what I did there?), and lay awake watching the light on my bedroom wall change from black to mauve, as I wait for a more seemly hour. I love Proust. I never expected to. Like many others, I’d always thought Proust to be impenetrable, and probably too dull to be worth the effort anyway. What is The Search about? It feels as if it’s about growing old, looking back, and finding long lost, melancholy, treasure. Proust’s primary tool - nay, his superpower, is making the mundane exquisite. To me, this is indeed great literature. I don’t think anyone compares to Marcel. How can any work so intimate, be untrue? I feel as of The Search has become part of me, so yes. A lifelong companion.

I'm on page 28. I read about a page or 2 per week (an all-time slow for me). I am journaling, I am looking things up (all the things, words, art, history, etc.) Do I like it? That's complicated. It's like a dream. It's absolutely brilliant. What is it about? Time, life, existence? What is it to me? A practice of mindfulness-an admonishment to examine my life more closely-to capture the details. To quote Vonnegut's uncle, "If this isn't nice, I don't know what is." And as far as where he fits in the cannon-jury is still out, but as far as what I've read over my lifetime-I'd be hard-pressed to choose someone who pushes the form of "novel" to the edges as skillfully as Proust has. I don't think I'll ever be done with Proust. To be done with Proust would be to be done with life. As the first page (and Ben) indicated-we become the reader-he puts the book in our hands and then he makes us forget it's even there. I can't think of anything more magical or surreal than that!

Jamie I love how you mention mindfulness - it’s definitely had this effect on me too, to remind me to pay attention!
