Welcome to the very first group reading thread for 'The Turn of the Screw' by Henry James.

We are discussing up to and including chapter five (and no further).

Each week, we have all been reading chapter-by-chapter together. And now is the time to discuss the story thus far.

Imagine yourself seated around a crackling fire with your fellow book club members, a dusty grandfather clock ominously ticking in the background, with an urge to share your experience.

The video above contains a list of questions that you might find helpful in guiding your appreciation of the story.

Feel free to ponder. Muse aloud. Ask questions. Attempt to unravel secrets. Go searching for skeletons. And share anything that has struck you so far.

I’m jumping in on this one, having just joined the club in the last few days, and having used those days to read the first part in serialized fashion, one day at a time, as opposed to one week at a time, given my circumstances, but still feeling the graces of delayed gratification. However, I must first admit that it is a very recent reread for me. I have an annual tradition of reading “spooky” stories in the five days leading up to Halloween. As so prior to becoming aware of and joining the club, I read The Turning of the Screw along with Frankenstein, I Am Legend, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Lottery. Reading Turn of the Screw a second time within a month, but doing so in a serialized fashion and as part of a communal read, has given me insights I missed or didn’t appreciate the first time around. And I especially appreciate Ben’s reading of the story. Looking forward to reading the rest of the story along with all of you.

I read the prologue and the first five chapters with, unfortunately, no attachment or even interest. I was surprised that this was a mark of some of the best gothic literature. Not for me. I am more than a bit bored. And I am reading this in the serialized fashion suggested. This afternoon I downloaded the audio from Audible with Emma Thompson. I am currently at the end of Chapter 3. This is more interesting. I'll comment further as I listen more.
