Dear Book Club Readers ---

I hope your reading is treating you well!

Here's a little bit of Book Club housekeeping/admin for the month.

1) A very warm HLBC welcome to new patrons

Welcome aboard, and thank you for joining the club!

Do let us know which book(s) you're enjoying at the moment and what life is looking like for you.

2) Coffee with Hardcore Literature

Do you have any questions about reading the Great Books? Or, indeed, anything else?

If so, please do let me know either here or PM me and I would love to sit down with a coffee and record my answers.

Here are the last three episodes of our Q&A Show:

3) Bookish Content

Your response to Shakespeare, Moby Dick, and our first 'Reading the Bible as Great Literature' lecture has been incredibly exciting.

And we have plenty more bookish goodies around the corner. We're forging on with a second round of tragedies, bracing ourselves for Blood Meridian, and will be diving into a new series on the History of Literature, which kicks off with Modernism and Post-Modernism.

As mentioned in the video, you might also enjoy the latest episode of the Hardcore Literature Podcast, in which we discuss Arthur Miller's 1953 play 'The Crucible.'

4) Thank you for your great comments

Your kind birthday wishes moved me so deeply. And your thoughtful responses to these great works inspire me endlessly.

Thank you for making this such a great community to lovingly discuss great literature. I'm so grateful for you all.

And that's all for now, folks!

Happy reading, and let us know if you have any questions for our Q&A show!

Hello everyone! Have been waiting for the first of the month to join this club after learning about it from the YouTube videos. I’ve recently decided I want to start reading more classical literature and to get more out of those reads. This seems like a great place to do it. I’ve got Moby Dick and Persuasion ready to be started. Going to go back and look at the previous discussions on them. Currently reading Shakespeare’s tragedies, In Search of lost Time (slooooowly) and The Pickwick Papers. Plan on going through Dicken’s oeuvre on more or less publishing order. Already read Twist and Nickelby. Going back to read Pickwick now. Getting ready for the start of the Blood Meridian read. Looking forward to a great time with this club 🙂.

I only joined last month and started with Anna Karenina and have gotten so much out of slowing down while reading sections, processing my thoughts, watching the videos, etc. so just for that, it's been so worth it for me so far. I also got Moby Dick and Persuasion to go next! 🙂

Hello Matt and Liz :) It's so great to have you both here reading with us! I'm thrilled to hear you're both enjoying Moby Dick and Persuasion - two of my all-time favourite works of fiction right there. And Anna Karenina too is an incredible experience. It's nice to see The Pickwick Papers getting some love - one of my favourite Dickens novels. This is the work I take down from the shelf when I need a good laugh :)
