Hello everyone. It will be 109 degrees today in the Arizona desert. Would love to be at Lulworth Cove today. I have been reading Clarissa. Also, picked up Twilight of the Idols/The Anti-Christ (Penguin edition) and a big 'Intellectual Biography' called Nietzsche, The Aristocratic Rebel by Domenico Losurdo. AND started The Mahabharata translated by Bibek Debroy in the new Penguin complete 10 volume English set ! Heavy Books

Interesting books your picking up Stock Vortex. The heat in Arizona make our 101 degree heat in Texas seem wimpy, but then your’s is a dry heat ;)

Hello all, I’m currently slogging away at Clarissa. I’m trying to read it in chunks but that is more difficult than I thought it would be. So I’ve been reading a few letters at a time then taking a break with something lighter. In this case murder mysteries by Keigo Higashino, translated into English from Japanese—The Devotion of Suspect X and The Salvation of a Saint so far. Reading Clarissa might take all summer at this rate! I don’t remember Richardson’s prose being quite so dense, but maybe it’s just my ADD brain cells that are struggling… So I plan on staying inside where it’s cool and reading Clarissa…

Hello Jo! Well done on slogging through Clarissa. Your approach sounds great to me - a few letters at a time, broken up with something lighter. If you read Clarissa in one season, I would definitely call that a huge success. It's a book that takes many readers years, and so many don't finish it. As for Keigo Higashino, thank you for the great recommendation! I don't believe I've read his works, so I'll be checking him out :)

I enjoyed The Devotion of Suspect X and have recommended it to quite a few people.

I've heard bad things about Losurdo, who was basically a Maoist academic who hated Nietzsche and dedicated that whole book to distorting his work. Still, do tell us if you have any helpful insights from it
