Dear Book Club Readers ---

I hope your reading is treating you well!

Here's a little bit of Book Club housekeeping/admin for the month.

1) A very warm HLBC welcome to new patrons

Welcome aboard, and thank you for reading with us!

Do let us know which book(s) you're enjoying at the moment and what life is looking like for you.

2) Coffee with Hardcore Literature

Do you have any questions about reading the Great Books? Or, indeed, anything else?

If so, please do let me know either here or PM me and I would love to sit down with a coffee and record my answers.

Here are the last three Q&A episodes:

3) Bookish Content

We reached the enigmatic ending of Blood Meridian, but the conversation around Cormac McCarthy continues. We have also entered the world of Samuel Richardson's Clarissa and are ready to enjoy the festive celebration of Shakespeare's comedies.

If you're interested in book collecting as a hobby, we also had a video here on this very topic recently that ran through different collection ideas.

We have a strong month ahead. We're going to learn to understand, appreciate, and love James Joyce's Ulysses. We also have our latest instalment of Middlemarch, our latest video on the history of literature, a show on reading in times of need, and much more.

4) Thank you for your great comments

Thank you for continuing to make this such a great community to lovingly discuss great literature. You continue to warm my heart with your passionate, intelligent, and inspiring comments. I'm so grateful for you all, and I'm currently enjoying making my way through our discussion threads.

And that's all for now, folks!

Happy reading, and let us know if you have any questions for our Q&A show!

Hi Ben and fellow readers! I’m new to the book club having only found it this week. I have always been a voracious reader but more popular fiction mostly. I loved my English Literature lessons at school, college and also took a supplementary English class for the first year of my degree where I read some of the classic novels and some Shakespeare. We have an open air festival of Shakespeare every year near where I live and this year we saw Romeo and Juliet. It was wonderful. My 13-year-old daughter loved it too and is studying it for her GCSEs next year. I recently picked up a copy of ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ and it has reignited my love of literature after months of no reading. I’m really looking forward to reading along with the book club and learning lots along the way. I have my copy of Ulysses on order and, although I’m a bit daunted, I can’t wait to get into it! I’m also dipping in and out of ‘The World’s Wife’ by Carol Ann Duffy. I am also looking forward to getting more acquainted with all of the lectures already on offer here. Gemma

Hello book people. Fun month for me. Reading Clarissa as my big read (very soon catching up to Letter 99) and can't wait to discuss and hear others opinions. I'm going slow through Shakespeare's tragedies. I think I'm most excited to start up Macbeth. So far I've given good deep reading into Hamlet and King Lear. I anticipate that I'll love Macbeth on the same level I read Self-Reliance by Emerson. I found many of his thoughts to be valuable I just received my Book-Collecting as a Hobby, by P.H. Muir. Can't wait to dive into this as I love collecting books, but I'm all over the place lol

Hello Gemma :) It's so wonderful to have you here reading with us! How amazing that you can share your love of Shakespeare with your daughter. My best memories as a teenager are of going to plays with my father. He took my to my first Shakespeare performance, and we ended up seeing quite a few together! I'll always be so grateful for that. It's great to hear that ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ has reignited your love of literature. Oscar Wilde is such a treasure. I like to routinely reread this one every autumn. And nice one on securing your copy of 'Ulysses'! I love how much excitement there is for this one. Daunting, but we'll absolutely make sure we enjoy the ride!

Hello Jeff! What an incredible reading month you're having. A slow read of Shakespeare is always rewarding. I'm so curious to hear what you make of Macbeth. If you're in the mood for a good film adaptation, I couldn't recommended the Michael Fassbender version highly enough. One of the best adaptations I've seen, along with Kurosawa's take on King Lear, 'Ran'. It's great that you're finding Emerson valuable - he can divide readers, but I find that he always offers me a lot of comfort. And nice one on picking up Muir's Book-Collecting as a Hobby - that's a dangerous book for literature addicts like us!
