Dear Book Club Readers ---

I hope your reading is treating you well!

Here's a little bit of Book Club housekeeping/admin for the month.

1) The Book Club Schedule for the New Year

We will be officially announcing the syllabus of great reads this Sunday.

I'm incredibly excited to reveal the program because we're going to be reading many truly remarkable works of great literature. I can't wait to hear what you make of it!

2) A very warm HLBC welcome to new patrons

Welcome aboard, and thank you for reading with us!

Do let us know which book(s) you're enjoying at the moment and what life is looking like for you.

3) Coffee with Hardcore Literature

Do you have any questions about reading the Great Books? Or, indeed, anything else?

If so, please do let me know either here or PM me and I would love to sit down with a coffee and record my answers.

Here are the last three Q&A episodes:

4) Discussions you may enjoy

We recently celebrated a milestone on the YouTube channel with a dedicated Q&A show. It was such an enjoyable conversation about great literature. If you haven't checked out it already, you can do so here.

And, as many of you are excited about Cormac McCarthy's new book, I just put out a short review video giving some of my initial thoughts, which you can check out here.

5) A deep thank you for being here

As this is a season of gratitude, I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you for making this such a magical year.

Thank you for deep reading these great books with us and for creating such a beautiful community to lovingly discuss great literature.

You continue to warm my heart with your passionate, intelligent, and inspiring comments. I'm so grateful for you all, and I appreciate you more than I can express!

And that's all for now, folks!

My love and gratitude goes out to all of you. Happy reading, and let us know if you have any questions for our Q&A show!

Ben, not sure where to post this question. It is for our mini group read of Ulysses starting in July. I do not see any obvious structure in Ulysses matching the 24 books of the Odyssey. So two questions, does Joyce riff off the whole of the Odyssey or just certain episodes? And should we read the whole of the Odyssey first or is there a way we can match them up to read simultaneously? Also, I hope you are down with the Fagles translation. I am biased because he was my professor at uni but otherwise certain it is better than the Robert Fitzgerald translation from forever ago. Or are there others? Thanks.

Tracy

Hello Ben, I’ve finished reading the stories of Anton Chekhov that you mentioned way back in a very early episode. The Kiss, The Darling, Ward no.6 and the lady and the dog but I haven’t been able to find where you lecture about the first three. Could it be that I misunderstood. If not, can you direct me to the lectures? Thanks for all you do.
