Dear Book Club Readers ---

Today, in celebration of another trip around the sun, I wanted to share some reflections on life and reading great literature with you.

This discussion also gives us a chance to consolidate some of the insights gleaned from Tolstoy as we now prepare to breach Dostoyevsky.

Topics include: reading one's heritage, the power of rereading, unconscious understanding, divine love, seeking meaning, and much more.

Happy birthday Ben, and thank you sharing with us. Very cool you were born on St Patrick’s day. I share a birthday with James Joyce, so I’ve always felt I will read his work deeply one day, perhaps with the help of this book club! The idea of heritage is interesting, and I think I need to spend some time with this to find what it means to me. I am often a little envious of people who have rich and different cultural heritages to call on. My family is English and English… although my Nan’s grandfather was from Cork. Perhaps this is why I’ve spent so much time chasing other cultures and have spent so far 13 of my adult years living abroad, in Spain, Palestine and now Greece. Reading my heritage feels like ‘just’ reading English books, but perhaps I can start to see it in a more nuanced or localised way. I have family from Yorkshire and Essex for example, and a connection with Lincolnshire where they live now. I spent time living in north East London as well, so perhaps this can lead to some research into writers connected with these places.

Happy belated birthday Ben! You’ve given me so much with this group ! My current attempt to live the great books includes me reading Samuel Pepys diaries day by day so that will take me a decade , lol, I genuinely feel like I have a double life now in the reformation 😅
