I seem to have gone off on a tangent since reading four of Shakespeare's history plays: I've finished reading The Hollow Crown, two short books-one each on Richards II & III, The Wars of the Roses, 1812, a recommended biography of Tolstoy, more Alice Monroe short stories, plus some humorous readings to give life perspective. I also am eating my way throug Aaron Sanchezl Mexican cookbooks, which have made my life more delicious. I can now make birria, chili colorado, chili verdi, chili relleno, Pico de gallo, carnitas, plus several other traditional Mexican salsas. My bueno, mis amigos.

I am new to the book club. I wished I had discovered a few years back during Covid times; I have been interested in the classics for years but could not find anybody who wanted to read them with me. Now I have a new whole new group!I had briefly thought of getting a graduate degree in English but with these lectures, my thirst for keeping company with “the greats” has been been satisfied. I like to listen to Ben’s lectures a few times and do so while out walking. I feel as if I am with a good friend! I really enjoyed reading Orlando and the lightness with which Orlando lives his life imaginatively spinning between the centuries and genders. He/she moves easily from one event to the next. Intoxicating! I am inspired to do the same with my life. I am also reading Middlemarch with another online group (2 or 3 chapters a week). This is doable and Ben’s lectures help a lot with understanding the Victorian times. I am working my way also through the Count of Monte Cristo to be prepared for the next Big Read. Also I am reading parts of Henry IV for the Shakespeare Project. It has always bothered me that I was able to finish a B.A in English without taking one Shakespeare course. This should never have been allowed! Also, I loved the Alice Munro stories and lectures. There is a lot to do in this club! I had to laugh, reading how one book club member felt he might have to quit his full time job to keep up with the readings. I look forward to studying Milton again later in the year. I did take a course on Paradise Lost in my 20s and I am eager to see if remembrances of it bubble up.
