‘When two human beings divided by hostility are both, at the same time, mystified - no, frightened - by the same apparition, there is a bond that springs up between them, and they find themselves united in the most unexpected way.’

Today we're conducting a deep reading of another emotionally powerful short story from Alice Munro: 'Runaway.'

We are discussing suspense, scapegoating, sympathy, subtext, displaced emotions, existential crisis, narrative tricks, and much more.

Thank-you Ben for the great lecture. I found this a hard story to read not a nice story - I think Flora was killed by Clarke to keep Clara in line - staying with him out of fear. How many relationships are held together like this - unfortunately many. Maybe Clarke wanted to destroy Flora because she meant so much to Clara and then to Sylvia. He feels the need to control by threat - look what I can do look what I have done. Clara avoids confirming this by not going near the area where Flora remains are. We all hope that Flora is free.

I read it the same way as Gem Esprey. After reading the letter from Sylvia-the days had passed-she ultimately became a Runaway.
