Hi all! I am new to the book club. I have very recently returned to the U.S. after three decades of life and work in Japan (and across Asia). This immersion into purposeful and glorious reading of the Western Canon is enabling me to recover my cultural footing. As an undergrad, I was committed to completing a degree in the classics only to find that the department I had entered was dissolving under my feet. Time to finish this work!

Does anyone feel they have a grasp of what qualifies as great literature? Perhaps because I read mostly nonfiction, unless it is obvious, i wouldn’t be qualified to make this distinction. For example, what about Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet? Right now I am reading The Book Before Printing; ancient, medieval and oriental.
