I’m working my way through the Booker longlist and have also just finished Northanger Abbey - now reading The Mysteries of Udolpho

I’m only a few books into the Long list. Old Gods Time by Sebastian Barry I found to be an oppressive read with trigger warning for child sex abuse. I just couldn’t connect with the writing style of this one. My personal favourite so far is The House of Doors by Malaysian writer Tan Twan Eng which sent me down a rabbit hole watching documentaries on the life and writing of W. Somerset Maugham. About to start All The Little Bird-Hearts. I’m looking forward to reading Prophet Song which quite a few are tagging as a strong contender. In other reading I enjoyed Northanger Abbey immensely and am still plodding along with Udolpho (the lead up to the ‘mystery’ is quite lengthy!) Have picked up from the library what I hope will be an interesting perspective on Austen -‘Jane Austen: The Secret Radical’.

Hello All I too have just joined this club, and like Mary, am hoping to reset through the readings and the club idea. After a very difficult 18 months, my husband is now an invalid and so I am closely tied to home, with a fair bit of time to read but little energy to go beyond British classic murder mysteries at the moment. So I will start slowly, reading the comments, and participating in the readings as the weeks go by. Will dig out my old copies of The Magic Mountain, War and Peace, and The Brothers K and reread them, hoping to kick-start a reading energy boost.
