Dear Book Club Readers —

I am shortly going to put together a video walking through the recent Booker Prize longlist announcement. I would really love you to be a part of the fun because I cherish your insights and reactions.

We have the most thoughtful community of sensitive and perceptive readers here and I think it would be wonderful to gather our opinions together. So let us know:

What are your thoughts on the Booker Prize?

I'd love to know what you make of this year's longlist and the prize in general :)

You can check out the Booker Prize longlist here.

Articles on the Booker:

Questions for You:

1) What do you think of the Booker Prize? And prize lists generally?

2) What do you think of the books on the list? Will you read any?

3) And which book do you think has a strong chance of winning?

Happy reading, everybody!

I love George Saunders and especially Lincoln in the Bardo! I went to a reading of his many many years ago before I even realized who he really was…and fell in love with him. He is also one of the kindest humans on the planet. I have gotten through most of his A Swim in the Pond in the Rain where you feel like you are a student in one of his classes as he discusses and dissects four short stories by four famous Russian authors..wonderful! Much like our Ben did with Alice Munro…which I absolutely loved! I like Irish writers a lot…in addition to Sebastian Barry Ian McEwan, and Anne Enright. I see some dislike J M Coetzee but I thought Disgrace was my kind of writing… I was so happy Barbara Kingsolver won the women’s prize I have loved many of her books and Demon Copperhead was no exception. One of our local universities has a wonderful visiting writers series so I have been fortunate to be able to attend readings of many gifted and wonderful authors and poets…once I have heard and met them I am automatically biased. I know you did ask for all of this but you got it anyway..haha! Thank you so much for your text I appreciate your friendliness. I am an older member and at times I feel out of it and a laggard compared to many who post here, but I am enjoying this club and the intelligent and insightful members. I appreciate all your posts Elizabeth! Thank you!

Mary, I am an older member, too: I am 68, so I am glad to meet someone like me who also appears to love the same books and writers as myself. I haven't heard about that book by George Saunders that you mention, but I am off to order a copy when I have finished writing this. I also enjoy attending meetings at which visiting writers speak about their work: it's one of my favourite kinds of outing.

I hadn’t read any of the Authors on the long list so I plan to read most of the list. Looks like most are available from my local library. So far I’ve read Old God's Time and The House of Doors (which I loved!)
