I hope you’re all keeping warm in this chilly season. While we’re pushing through the next stages of the mech project, Otaking has been refreshing his mind by tinkering with some lo-fi sci-fi effects inside the VR world 1994 (mostly) time capsule. It’s been a helpful way for him to reset between the heavier story work, and I thought you might enjoy seeing one of the holographic FX he put together. He recreated a classic Dalek-style teleport glow and even built a little 1988 BBC-inspired basement set, which turned into a surprisingly charming space. Even if you’re not into Unity or VRChat, it’s always fun watching retro effects come alive again with modern tools. I even got to flex some old level design muscles by giving notes on how to lead people down into the creepy basement and in from the rainy boulevard.Teleportation effects like this show up all over retro live-action sci-fi shows: Star Trek’s holodeck shimmer, Blake’s 7’s teleport bracelets, the Asgard beams in Stargate, so it was fun watching Otaking craft his own version inside the arcade. I don’t know if any of you dabble in 3D work, but he built this entirely from Unity YouTube tutorials, so you should be able to replicate something similar for personal use or fan projects, whether it’s Tron, Red Dwarf, Space: 1999, or Babylon 5. Or even recreating game style effects like Metroid’s morph ball beams, Mega Man’s particle materialization, or Star Fox’s energy warps.I hope you enjoy this small creative detour that helped keep the energy up while we continue shaping the mech project. Otaking’s recorded an 8 minute explanation of the effect along with some arcade shots, so I wanted to share it here for fun.Thank you for sticking with us while we take these steps one piece at a time. Every bit of progress, big or small, means something to us and we appreciate you being here for the whole journey.- Maki
