Hello everyone!

I've been messing around with getting a VHS effect on my work. First off, I animated a simple laugh:

Then I coloured it:

Then I dragged the clip into Sony Vegas and used a plugin called Universe VHS 2.2.(free trial in the description of this video! - https://youtu.be/7GaAUWrfpis )After lots of tweaking I arrived at the following settings, if you want to try them for yourself:(Patreon doesn't let you click and enlarge images for some bewildering reason, so I've included it as an attachment)

And the final result:

Obviously I'm not about to slap a flickery VHS filter on my finished films! But it's quite an interesting result and something to help me consider what kind of finishing touches I think would help the work most while keeping it enjoyable for viewers and myself as the creator.  I sincerely hope to include more smug laughter in my work going forward. All the best,

-Paul

A final finishing step would be to drop the resolution down to SD, then run it through a CRT filter. Retroarch has a bunch of tweakable CRT filters built in for use with various emulators, but there is a video module that it can use to load an arbitrary file and apply the exact same filters. IIRC it also has NTSC and PAL transmission simulation filters to add even more grunge above the existing VHS artefacts for imitating transmission over an old RF link.

Retro effects are nice and all but you should still keep the unaltered version available, not everyone likes retro filters.

Not bad (and I still own at least two VCRs, partly because you can't beat the genuine article, heh heh)!

Oh, I've been looking for something like this for some of my (live action) projects. Thanks for the heads up!
