The fourth is coming up fast! Help me pick a movie to watch this year! What are all of your fourth plans if you are in the USA?

Comments

Michael Enos

Please. Hamilton. ..more votes for this.

dachen13

Mr Smith plz!! Too long since we last had a classic Hollywood film and this one is timeless and more important than ever. Crossing is also good for Presidents’ Day in my opinion and or Christmas in honor of when it happened.

Jason Dolan

It is TIME to watch Born on the 4th of July starring the guy born on the 3rd of July

Brian O'Grady

I hope it’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington!

Jay Jay Reyes

a different view to what Tom Cruise can do as an actor Cassie. you will be impressed with this performance.

James UK

4th July? Election day over here this year. I’ll be trying to work out who the least worst option is and voting for them.

Brandon

Born on the 4th. Another good Tom Cruise movie. Hope you do top 2, as it might not win

Ben Schwartz

The Crossing won't win, but i highly recommend it - starring Jeff Daniels as General George Washington in his attempt to cross the Delaware River. There's a copy on youtube, i believe.

Alex Gorell

cmon Mr. Smith goes to Washington. My favorite Jimmy Stewart movie.

MikeLL

I would prefer 1776 but voted for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, because it at least does have a chance at winning. I would prefer an aspirational film that celebrates the holiday. I am opposed to Born On the Fourth of July because it is the opposite of a film that celebrates the holiday. Do people vote for it because it has the name of the holiday in the title? Tom Cruise? My dream of a Yankee Doodle Dandy watch is not looking good right now.

dachen13

turn Washington’s spies and or the new Michael Douglas Franklin series.

dachen13

I’ve been starved of classic Hollywood cinema on this channel.

Phil Stubblefield

I'll be doing the same on this side of the pond come November... 😟

Danika Silva

An American tale is made by a former Disney artist and employee

Ria Grix

Good to see a classic like Mr. Smith in the lead (a classic to me, prehistoric to those under the age of 30)

Jennifer Medicus

My go to movies for every 4th are 1776 and Yankee Doodle Dandy. Agree with others that I want something a bit uplifting and patriotic when so many times I don't always feel that way. I love the end of 1776, the risk they were all taking and didn't know how it was going to turn out. And 1776 is about the actual 4th.

Omar

Have a soft spot for an American Tail, one of my earliest childhood memories was seeing that movie.

Stick Figure Studios

While my own personal 4th of July tradition is viewing the "original HAMILTON" (i.e. the 1972 musical movie "1776"), I fear its chances in this poll are slim to none, so I'm hoping it goes to Frank Capra's classic MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON with Jimmy Stewart, one of the great Hollywood movies about American politics and an obvious inspiration for DAVE. Cassie will love it. I'd also be fine if AN AMERICAN TAIL won, but as with "1776," I don't see it happening.

Matthew Brown

Oh born on thr 4th of July broke I mean.... Fudge!!! I sure can't we watch mr smith goes to Washington????

Nathan Jasper

July 4 is on a Thursday so most likely I'll be at work hoping people aren't traveling a lot this year but most likely will be rolling my eyes at the amount of tourists that lose their brains as soon as they enter a hotel 😂

MikeLL

I would prefer 1776 if we can't have Yankee Doodle Dandy, but I voted for Mr. Smith because it might win.

Ike

“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” - I cannot think of any other film that encapsulates the American spirit more than this 1939 classic. Directed by Frank Capra (It’s A Wonderful Life), starring Jimmy Stewart, and the stunningly clever and gorgeous, Jean Arthur. This is just a no-brainer for me. 🥳

Caomhan84

Write in for John Adams, the HBO miniseries. Not for this year, because it's long, but for next year... Or to put on your list to watch on your own. :)

MikeLL

I'm right there with you. All your reasons are sound. 1776 would be the most appropriate movie, an actual history lesson about the holiday.

Louis Chapman

I've only seen Born on the 4th of July, which is great! I'll have to check some of the others out.

William Brownlee

3 great movies on this poll. 1776 is a great musical and a great teaching tool about the Declaration of Independence. Please let your kids watch it. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is another Frank Capra movie. Parts are dated, but much of it is the same as today's headlines. The ending gets me every time. And I LOVE Saunders. I wanted to marry someone like her. Yankee Doodle Dandy is a wonderful James Cagney film with another great message. These are movies everyone should see.

Mike McLaughlin

Yankee Doodle Dandy, Biopic of George M. Cohan. James Cagney - Oscar for Best Actor, Directed by Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, Adventures of Robin Hood, White Christmas). Cohan has a statue in Tines Square to commemorate his historic impact in the American Theatre. Cohan was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by FDR. He wrote many songs, including WWI inspirational song 'Over There' and 'You're A Grand Old Flag'. Oh, btw Yankee Doodle Dandy was born on the 4th of July, although Cohan was born on the 3rd of July.

David Freese

We need more uplifting stuff this summer. A lot of dramas the first 6 months this year sprinkled with sci fi . Plus after Bill & Teds I realize how much fun it is to see Cassie smile and laugh.

Ike

Completely agree about “Born on the Fourth of July.” It’s simply NOT a celebratory film and I’ve never been a fan of Oliver Stone.

Stick Figure Studios

Honestly, while it wouldn't be my first or even second choice, I'd be fine with YANKEE DOODKE DANDY too. It's a great movie. It just doesn't have a chance, so, like you, I'm supporting a candidate who might actually win. My biggest hope is that it does not go to FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS or BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY. Fine films both, but better suited to a "War Movie Wednesday" than an Independence Day film poll.

David Freese

Yes but the tone is such a ….. no spoilers! We need more uplifting for 4th of July

Tara ✨💫

Great Choices but I wanna see more Jimmy Stewart

dachen13

Turn Washington’s spies and Franklin too.

Stick Figure Studios

More Jimmy Stewart is always a good thing. I don't think Cassie has seen him this young yet either.

dachen13

Sixty percent of the movies I watch are classics

Mike McLaughlin

Would also support a write-in effort for the movie PT-109. The story of valor exhibited by U. S. President John F. Kennedy during WWII while serving his tour of duty in the Pacific.

james sweeney

One of my favorite movies as a kid. I haven't seen it in years.

Ike

Yes! John Adams!

MikeLL

I think Jimmy Stewart won the Oscar for The Philadelphia Story by being denied for Mr. Smith. Both great films.

MikeLL

Ike, right on all counts!

Walter

Mr Smith Goes To Washington is a fantastic movie!

Stick Figure Studios

1776 is one of my favorite films and an annual viewing tradition for me. It won't win here, but I hope Cassie gets to watch it someday.

MikeLL

I think Born On is a fine film. Just not the right film for a 4th of July poll.

Shehab Dawoud

Not just because it’s the only one I’ve seen but Born on The 4th is a top 5 Cruise performance, so I’m hoping for that. It’s a shame that nowadays he’s only devoted to Ethan and Maverick. He’s got one more Oscar charge in him.

Just Plain Bob

One of Jimmy Stewart’s best, and that’s saying something.

Stick Figure Studios

In spite of their age and the crippling influence of recency bias, some classics are just hard to beat.

Jim Sarbinoff

So many great movies! It was hard to choose.

Andrew Buel

Disappointed that I can only vote for one movie, but hey, that's just comes from being spoiled on TNG polls. XD The musical lover in me would enjoy sharing Yankee Doodle Dandy, Hamilton, and 1776 with you. All different stories but all have fun musical moments and heart wrenching scenes. I wound up voting for Smith. Let's give some more black & white movies a chance. A great performance by Jimmy Stewart (Wonderful Life).

Marcos

I am a little surprised she hasn’t seen it, and surprised it’s not getting any more votes!

Stick Figure Studios

Indeed. There were a LOT of comments talking about great length about Don Bluth and his experience at Disney in Cassie's SECRET OF NIMH reaction.

Chris H.

Mr. Smith is a fantastic pick, nice job PIB audience. But put a pin in "The Crossing", which works pretty well as a great Christmas/December movie.

Stick Figure Studios

I agree with everything you said. I also voted for MR. SMITH (even though I'd prefer 1776) abd don't want to see BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY win.

Texas Anla'Shok

Another thing I’d recommend is the John Adams HBO miniseries.

LukeG84

Surely Born on the Fourth of July has to win. It’s a Tom Cruise movie after all.

Stick Figure Studios

It's a good one to have as a favorite. I can't decide personally between MR. SMITH, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, VERTIGO and REAR WINDOW as my favorite. All great though.

Just Plain Bob

Another vote here for “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” Such a wonderful story, brilliantly directed by Frank Capra (Cassie’s already seen his work before: “It’s A Wonderful Life”). And Jimmy Stewart gives the performance of his career (possibly - he had so many great performances).

Doug R

Mr Smith is the original Rocky.

zynjams

Born on the Fourth of July is so depressing I only needed to see that once. Never again

Stick Figure Studios

Indeed. One of the great Hollywood movies about American politics.

Brian Wood

Gettysburg is a great 4th of July movie, since the battle took place from July 1st to the 3rd, and was a high water mark in our nation's history.

MikeLL

Same.

Dan M

Wow…this was a tough decision. While An American Tail is a fantastic animated movie that is really uplifting (and Fievel is adorable!), Mr Smith Goes To Washington is, IMO, James Stewart’s best performance after It’s A Wonderful Life. A great story that demonstrates how one simple man who’s willing to stand up for what he believes is right can take down corruption and greed. Born on the Fourth of July is a good movie, and Tom Cruise does a great acting job, but its not the uplifting, feel good movie that Mr. Smith and An American Tale are.

Dan M

Well said

dachen13

I’d back this!

dachen13

I am tired of new movies. Back to classics imo. But I do love that one.

Stick Figure Studios

@David: I agree. A fine film but despite its title, not a 4th of July movie.

Dan M

I haven’t seen Hamilton, but I’ve heard great things about it. I wouldn’t be upset if it won this poll so I could cross this one of my list. But if not, I’ll just have to watch it on my own.

Shadowlord

Our Independence Day plan for this year is to continue our annual tradition of watching 1776!

MikeLL

Yankee Doodle Dandy has always been one of my favourite films.

Stick Figure Studios

I also love AN AMERICAN TAIL and 1776, but they aren't gonna win, so I voted for MR. SMITH too.

DragonConToddOfTheDiscerningGeeksPortalPodcast

I’m not usually one for really old movies, but I voted for “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” solely because of curiosity, due to its mention in “The American President,” which is, 29 years later, still my #1 favorite non-Lord-of-the-Rings movie.

Just Plain Bob

Yep. I totally forgot that and it’s one of my favorite reactions.

MikeLL

Here, here. Great thoughts!

MikeLL

It will be Cassie’s third Capra film. It Happened One Night was the second.

Stick Figure Studios

It's be great if we could also get MEET JOHN DOE, MR DEEDS GOES TO TOWN and ARSENIC AND OLD LACE reacted to on the channel.

Nathan Swapp

Flags of our fathers is fantastic and has a concurrent sequel based on the Japanese perspective called Letters from Iwo Jima. Some consider it the better movie.

Raj K. Dixit

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a true classic.

Jonathan Caro

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. A classic Jimmy Stewart film.

Tom Furze

Mr. Smith goes to Washington, boys forget what their country means by just reading The Land of the Free in history books. Then they get to be men they forget even more. Close second place preference would be Yankee Doodle Dandee, Over There, and 1776, Homicide, Homicide.

Jeff

I went with Mr Smith Goes to Washington. Yankee Doodle Dandy is also a favorite of mine (Jimmy Cagney may be best known for his gangster roles but he was a hell of a song-and-dance man) but it won’t win.

Jack Dees

The crossing is great. It's too bad only a handful has saw it.

David Crabtree

Born on the Fourth of July is garbage.

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

You know, here in UK, we are about to have a general election on the 4th July. All the early election polls are saying that the current Conservative government is going to suffer a landslide defeat at the ballot. I have already seen on social media a photo-shopped picture of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the poster of Born On the Fourth of July and have renamed the title: Gone on the Fourth of July!!!

Christian Rennie

Any chance to see Jimmy Stewart is a welcome!

Steve Holton

My uncle bought a new home 2 blocks from us so on the 4th of July we will have a party there to celebrate. It is an old Victorian home from 1905 built by the inventor of canned tuna, but fell into disrepair. He’s been working hard to get it ready. Almost all the ghosts have been moved out. 👻 Yes, I believe canned tuna will be served. 🐟 Looking forward to these films. A nice birthday present for US. 🎂

John

Yes, we need more Jimmy Stewart!

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

In the wake of Donald Sutherland's death, I have recently rewatched a BBC Scene by Scene interview with him in 2001. He talks about Mash (1970), Don't Look Now (1973) and other movies he made in his career. TRIGGER WARNING, there is a pretty unpleasant, gruesome clip from Bertolucci's epic film 1900 (1976) at 22:20. If you're sensitive to animal cruelty it is best to skip from 22:20 to 25:48. https://vimeo.com/963605198/80e9ce2251?share=copy

John

Familiar face in Mr. Smith Cassie, Claude Rains, Bogies French friend in Casablanc

John

Fourth plans, grill time!!!!

Henry Graham

Robert Altman's Nashville (1975) is one of the great American films and it should be certainly on this list. Hamilton isn't even a film!

WastedPo

"Born on the Fourth of July" was nominated for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (Oliver Stone) and Best Actor for Tom Cruise. (The fact that it ultimately lost Best Picture to "Driving Miss Daisy" elicits in me the same reaction that many people had the year that "Saving Private Ryan" lost to "Shakespeare in Love.") I think it remains one of Cruise's best performances ever, one that is not talked about nearly enough. It also has one of John Williams's most beautiful scores. It's based on a true story. I believe the reason it's not popular today is because it questions the necessity of war - a stance that movies took quite frequently throughout the 70s and 80's - but I guess that's not the mainstream opinion these days. It also casts a critical eye on the shoddy treatment of returning soldiers, but I guess it's not cool to shine a spotlight on that either. (Seriously, paying tribute to the soldiers is what the holiday is all about. And sometimes that means showing the ugly truth of what they've gone through.) I feel like a couple years have gone by on this channel when people have said, "Oh, don't worry. Popcorn in Bed will watch it on July 4th." And then July 4th has gone by with no reaction to it. And then afterwards, "Oh, don't worry, they'll get to it next year."

Grégory Gautier

Born on the Fourth of July (1989) oui!! one of the best Tom Cruise/Oliver Stone

WastedPo

It's such a great performance. I really don't understand why this channel which is so partial to Tom Cruise, has avoided it for so long. (As far as Cruise's Oscar chances, I really do think if he hadn't gone up against Daniel Day Lewis that year, he'd already have a gold statuette. These days, however, I feel his controversial image would lower his chances of winning one, regardless of the role.)

K, Zachary

This was a tough call Mr. Smith Goes To Washington with Jimmy Stewart one of my favorite actors and he was a great human being. Born On The Fourth Of July, 1960's ant-war movie. MSGTW has stuck with me. Jimmy Stewart was just so good I just think Cassie will like this one more. Like I said it's a tough call.

Shawn Kildal

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington ranked 29th on the original AFI's top 100 movies of all time list. Great movie to watch for the 4th!!

Troy Silvester

Well, if your theme is July 4th... and you really want to know about the events that led to the birth of the Nation, 1776 is the best choice. Well acted and fairly true to the facts, and most of all entertaining! Probably the best choice for a neighbor to the north to see!

Rick Williams

You can't go wrong with a Jimmy Stewart movie.

sarCC

I love Hamilton, but Mr Smith... is one helluva classic Jimmy Stewart movie.

Stick Figure Studios

I agree (it's my annual Independence Day tradition), but it ain't gonna win.

ContrabandDonut

I adore 1776 I saw it as a kid and my adoration was total. But as an adult, I still love it, but its a three hour C-SPAN with some songs, While I like a few of the songs, are good its not even the best musical on the list .

Shawn Kildal

True story. Had my girlfriend and a group of friends over one night and we watched Born on the 4th of July. We had to stop the movie half way through because some felt the movie was too depressing and couldn't continue with it. Girlfriend didn't talk to me for a couple of days wondering why I would show her that movie. I loved the movie but it's definitely not for everyone. Hopefully Carly won't be be watching along.

Clay F

I had a tough time deciding between these four: -Hamilton (2020) -Mr. Smith goes to Washington (1939) -Flags of our Fathers (2006) -Born on the Fourth of July (1989) *Born on the Fourth of July (1989) -- I voted this. An "unforgettable performance from Tom Cruise" and "thought-provoking subject matter." Oliver Stone is ambitious. While somewhat bleak for me in my old age, I liked the movie a lot when I was young, and still do. An important movie. *Mr. Smith goes to Washington (1939) is AFI Top 100 and I like Jimmy Stewart -- so a very close second for me. I've seen it but don't remember it that well. *Flags of our Fathers (2006) -- good subject matter. *Hamilton (2020) -- I haven't seen this but want to.

Daniel Johnson

1776 is the only movie on the list that actually applies to the 4th of July. I can see it’s obviously not even in the running to win at this point, but I really hope you guys check it out if you haven’t already. It’s such a classic and the best movie I’ve ever seen about the founding of this country.

Rick Williams

It is an unusual collection of movies for this poll. Some movies on the poll fit for the 4th. Others are harder to figure out why they are here. And some other movies that would be good choices are not on it. But, It's Cassie's house. I'm just visiting.

Story Archer

Superlative isn't adequate to describe Hamilton's magnificence - it belongs in a category all its own - but I can't imagine reacting to it. It's is SO dense you have to watch it 2-3 times to even catch everything going on, and there's never time to even take a breath.

ENC SW DV Rush

Have really wanted Cassie to see Mr Smith Goes to Washington for quite some time,... be a good one to watch with her sister as well, her kids too,... Not only a classic but just a darn good story,... very patriotic,...

Clay F

An "unforgettable performance from Tom Cruise" and "thought-provoking subject matter." Oliver Stone is effectively ambitious.

Jeff

This is why I didn’t consider voting for Hamilton.

p0sthum4n

The fact that American Tail isn't even coming close to winning is a shanda. There are no cats in America.

jdj830

Nice to see that I'm with the majority for a change. I think you will enjoy MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON. But a couple of other films that are appropriate for the holiday come to mind that aren't on the list. I highly recommend LITTLE BIG MAN, an epic comedy/western starring Dustin Hoffman as a white man raised among the Cheyenne; it's a masterpiece that tells a big swath of the American story. Another epic film that distills the American spirit is NASHVILLE, which...I can't describe it, just see it. It stars pretty much everyone in the 1970s. But what I'm really wondering is...while I appreciate your wanting to celebrate your neighbor to the south on its birthday, I would also be interested in your take on Canadian cinema. What's the great big sweeping epic that tells the stirring Canadian story? Speaking of which - my condolences on the loss of Donald Sutherland. A tribute to his legacy would be welcome.

jdj830

I think musicals are kind of its own category. She's seen a few but really needs to take a deep dive and when she does Hamilton will surely be included (as will 1776.)

John

Anybody mention Dracula (1979) for Halloween, Cassie. You saw old Frank Langella in Dave, maybe you d get a kick out of seeing him as a young hunk Dracula!

Shehab Dawoud

Looks like this won’t be the time either..🙄 At least DDL’s performance was iconic. 96 and 99 were bigger snubs for Cruise, nobody even remembers the performances he lost to. Top Gun Maverick saving cinema has improved his image a lot. If he did a proper role well, he could have a chance.

Above Average Dave

All in on any Jimmy Stewart movie and voted for MR. SMITH. However, with regard to THE CROSSING and knowing waaaaaay too much about the Battles of Trenton and Princeton that were the results of Washington's crossing (there were actually two in three days), I will share one little known fact: Washington nearly ended the war in December 1776. Background: Washington was about to lose his meager army of, at that point less than 3,000 mostly-healthy men on Dec. 31. They were all volunteers and many were resolved to go home when their one-year enlistment was over. In fact, many weren't waiting and deserting. The crossing of the Delaware — no mean feat during an ice storm in an already nasty early winter — was an act of desperation because between the loss of most of his volunteers on New Year's Even and the pending spring campaign of the British, he was looking at annihilation. But his victories at Trenton and the Princeton left the entire British winter munition storage — and virtually all of their North American army's gun powder and shot, as well as dozens of mobile cannons and hundreds of muskets and other gear — sitting guarded by fewer than a dozen men less than 20 miles away in New Brunswick. Washington saw this and wanted to make a run for it and beat Cornwallis, who was still mobilizing his men in Manhattan, to the warehouse. If he had, the British would be basically disarmed and would have had to sue for peace or be wiped out by the "rebels," as they were called back then. Unfortunately, his men were exhausted from the two over and back crossings and two battles. Also, his volunteers were still set on leaving, even though Washington offered to pay them out of his own pocket for six weeks more service. It was not an action that could wait, and they would've had to leave directly from Princeton. It's tantalizing to think what would've happened if he succeeded, though.

abraham wilson

Glad to see Mr Smith on this pole, love it.

Dan M

If An American Tale was higher in the poll, I may have switched my vote to that to try and get it to #2 or #3, because I’m pretty sure Mr. Smith will keep the top spot. But Born on the Fourth has too much of a lead over An American Tale.

John Liebling

What about a double feature? Smith and Born. Two films of their era and could not be more different in style and substance. Both with great acting and message. I hope down the road 1776 becomes a Cassie pick. Her little one is still too young for 1776, but the two older boys might find it educational.

T.L.A

Yeah, Boogie Nights is a great movie too but I would not recommend to everyone. Its just not for everyone like that movie

Dan M

Even if Mr. Smith and An American Tail weren’t on this poll, I still wouldn’t have picked Born on the 4th for that exact reason. Its a really good movie, but not one you’d want to watch to celebrate Independence Day.

Marja

Depends; do you want to feel down or uplifted? And with Hamilton being a musical, what would be left after the editing (unless it’s a Patreon exclusive). I’m going with my gut and my heart, and if I can vote twice, it’s Stewart and Cagney, but if it’s just one vote, I must go with Mr. Capra Goes to Washington. Love his early work.

SeanATX

Would love to see a Hamilton reaction, as an easy excuse to watch it again. Been fortunate enough to have seen the live production three times. Fantastic. Each time saw it with my mom, who recently passed. Our family is big fans of musicals. But the current top two would be great as well. Haven't seen Mr. Smith but of course have known of it forever, so would be a great reason to finally watch it also!

Dan M

My 4th of July plans? BBQing in the backyard, cooling off in the pool, playing a little cornhole, and watching our neighbors paint the sky with fireworks. We used to go to Jones Beach to watch their fireworks show, but we would have to get their hours before the show to get a decent spot, and it would take forever to get out of the parking lot to come home. Better to enjoy the day from the comfort of our own yard.

Keith Jones

Wait, a movie I voted for is WINNING!?!?

Clay F

Born on the 4th of July is an excellent movie to celebrate Independence Day. Bleak but important. Captivating performance by Cruise. Profound subject matter. Central to appreciating our Independence and Constitution.

WastedPo

If I understand AC555's comment correctly, it's meant to imply that "Born on the Fourth of July" is a new movie. I find that kind of a funny comment to say about a movie that's now 35 years old. (But yeah, time does fly, so understandable.)

Terdell Ferguson

Though clearly not winning this poll, I'd still love to see Cassie and Carly's reactions to 1776 (a musical based on the Broadway play) about the creation of The Declaration of Independence and Flags of Our Fathers, an emotional powerhouse of a film based on a true story, and the "most famous picture in the world".

Jerrod Acree

Goes to Washington and/or An American Tail.

Troy Silvester

William Daniels was amazing as John Adams, but all of the cast was very strong! Of course, you are right about it not winning, looking like it will be in the bottom 3. Too bad, Mr Smith will be the obvious winner. I'm kind of disappointed that Born on the 4th, is getting this much love, probably good to see, but I would not choose it as a 4th celebration!

Clarence Newman

Just voted for Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers. Cassie mentioned she wants to watch Letters From Iwo Jima and this is the sister movie to that one. Flags is from the American point of view, Letters is from the Japanese point of view.

Allen W. McDonnell

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington! This is such a great movie, we saw it first in civics class in 1984 and its still a gem today!

Kuskesh Haramzadeh

I'm voting for An American Tail just for the music 🎵🎶 Didn't Linda Ronstadt do "Somewhere Out There"?

Dan M

Lol…this is the 2nd time you and I disagreed on what movie is a good choice to celebrate an event. Its all good though…I appreciate your passion for the movies you love. After all, that’s what being a part of a community like this is all about.

Doc Larry/old geezer

Sometimes I forget how old I am. however some classics Movies do win. Mr. Smith goes to Washington a brilliant movie. Yankee doodle Dandy only gets 3% a movie about George M. Cohan (starring James Cagney) unbelievable

MacGuffinStuff

Great poll, Born On The Fourth Of July is in my opinion Tom Cruise's greatest acting performance, he literally brings me to tears in that one.

Dan M

Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram. An excellent song!

Shawn Kildal

Linda and the late James Ingram.

Silver Machine

I'm actually happy just to see 1776 included in the poll. It's one of my favorite musicals with great songs, compelling drama, a little romance and comedy, and quite a bit of historical accuracy. Would love to watch it with C&C some day.

Shawn Kildal

Amen to that Dan M! Like I said, I loved the movie and thought everyone else would too. Just never had a movie watching experience like the one I had that night. Tom was amazing as always.

Silver Machine

Great cast, but I find all the shaky hand-held camerawork really distracting.

Graeme Edgeler

I rewatched The Crossing over the weekend. I really like it. Very simply - but well - made. I feel like a full biopic of Washington would be overall worse, but taking a very small part of his story, and focusing on that for a short film works great.

Kyle Prince

1776? The Musical? Hmmm... Have we ever done a broadway musical on PiB????

Shadowlord

If not, 1776 is a great place to start! One of the best musicals of all time, IMHO.

Shadowlord

It's brilliant...and still holds up today! Really wish more people would take interest in this classic.

Stick Figure Studios

I've of my favorite musicals and ann annual 4th of July tradition for me.

Stick Figure Studios

Ditto. It won't win, but this at least puts it on Cassie's radar.

Stick Figure Studios

I suspect most people haven't even heard of YANKEE DOODLE DANDY.

Stick Figure Studios

"Somewhere Out There" actually became the title of Don Bluth's memoir.

Stick Figure Studios

It's smartly written with great performances by a solid cast and excellent period costumes and art design... but I agree that the cinematography is a little odd (not just the shaky-cam but also the frequent and unmotivated use of Dutch Angles).

MikeLL

Did you say ARSENIC AND OLD LACE? I think I mention it every Halloween. Even got it on a poll one time!

Walter

I do agree from an acting stand point, it's his best performance.

MikeLL

That's a good point. We have done several musicals on the channel, MY FAIR LADY was a recent miss, but yes, we have never done an honest to gosh Broadway musical.

Ted Little

Yankee Doodle Dandy is honest patriotism, which began filming the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked.

John Sullivan

You haven't seen Hamilton? Where were you hiding?

Shanwyn Nightfox

Since I am not american, I feel like I shouldn't even vote. So, knock yourself out, dear friends on the other side of the atlantic :)

Julie

I love the diversity of this poll! My first thought was to vote for Yankee Doodle Dandy. I love love Danny Kaye. Mr. Smith goes to Washington is also fantastic and I figure this will rank very high if it doesn't win, so although it's not really a "movie" I went for Hamilton. I can't believe Cassie hasn't seen it. The music/performance is fantastic. (Seeing live is way better because the energy is just awesome) Still I think it a must see. Maybe I'll watch this tomorrow. ;)

Mark Vaderr

No plans for the 4th of July for me. Wish I could be in Disneyland. :(

SINGING IN THE RAIN was turned into a Broadway musical *after* the movie, but no stage musicals turned into a movie yet

Anthony James who played the creepy diner waiter (eventually exposed as killer) went on to play several notable roles throughout his career. In addition to many bit roles in 70s and 80s TV series, even appearing in at least one Star Trek TNG episode as a Romulan officer, he was the creepy talent agent in the band Poison's "Fallen Angel" music video, and most notable to me being my favorite movie, he played Skinny in Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven". He was the shop owner who Clint Eastwood shot for "decorating his store" with Morgan Freeman's dead body.

Chris Davis

I cannot recommend "1776" enough! I watch it every 4th weekend! I see it won't be picked by the Patrons, but I hope you pick it sometime, as it's very enjoyable!

MikeLL

The Philadelphia Story. Harvey. Flight of the Phoenix. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. The Man Who Knew Too Much. Winchester '73. You Can't Take It With You. Rope. Bend Of The River. How. The. West. Was. Won.

James Ingram is always the guy I struggle to pop culture reference when I come across the original We Are The World music video. He's in that insane opening lineup. Somewhere Out There is after We Are The World but its a good reference. Thanks.

Kuskesh Haramzadeh

OMG so much talent in one recording studio! I think I'd be the most Star Struck by Stevie Wonder! Ironically, he'd never realize how smitten I'd be 😎 James had the smoothest and most unique voice. The closest comparison I could think of would be Issac Hayes or Lou Rawls. But Linda Ronstadt OMG! She makes Celine Dion sound like Miss Piggy 🤣 She had the most beautiful voice ever! Remember the duo she did with Paul Simon? That was simply breathtaking 🥰

Jocelyn Haeberle

Mr. Smith is a MUST, in my opinion. But so is 1776. My family watches this every year, if possible. I learned so much about US history from this as a child. It was the Hamilton of its day! 🥰

Shadowlord

Same here! Watching 1776 is our annual tradition. It's a crime that so many younger folks have never seen it.

Joe J

I voted for Flags of our Father, no chance it can win though. Maybe Cassie should do one modern film and one older classic.

KJ

It's more entertaining that one might think. It's different for sure

Danny T

If Mr Smith wins and is liked maybe some might consider another 1939 film with Mr in it's title. 1939 Good Bye Mr Chips

Eric Galdes

I know it won’t win. But I’ve been hoping that you and Carly would watch Hamilton forever. I think you guys would jam, laugh, cry, and learn. A quadfectra However it works out, love you guys.

Tara ✨💫

Just stopped by to check on the poll. C’mom Mr. Smith. Love me some more Jimmy!!

Matthew Gibson

Flags of our Fathers is an ok movie that was so close to being excellent. The book was good too. Thus my vote is for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Capra and Stewart at their pre-war best. For the Fourth I am going to visit my aging Grandparents, enjoy them while I can.

Andarian

It's not winning, but I would definitely recommend you watch *The Crossing* with Jeff Daniels at some point in the future. It's not perfect from a historical standpoint, but it really gives you the feeling of what Washington and the Continentals faced in the late autumn/winter of 1776.

Erin

I voted for it too!

James Amyx

Looks like you may need to watch the top 2!!

Doc Larry/old geezer

That would make it easier for her to watch movies from the old geezer generation. Her reactions are wonderful motivates me to watch movies I have never seen and rewatch movies I have seen with different set of eyes.

Clay F

+1 for the John Adams HBO miniseries.

Clay F

Dan, my thoughts exactly. First, your comments (even if I disagree), have a reasonable basis. Second, I am often in agreement with you. I like your comments.

mhz

I would go to Six flags ...

Clay F

Born on the 4th of July (1989) --an excellent movie to celebrate Independence Day --bleak but important --captivating performance by Cruise. Profound subject matter --relevant in appreciating our Independence and Constitution I made the close decision to vote for "Born on the 4th of July" (1989) [a movie I watched many times when young, but rarely rewatch now in my old age b/c it is bleak] over "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" (1939) [AFI Top 100 movie (w/Jimmy Stewart who I like) that I want to rewatch]. I concluded I would rather watch Cassie react to a 1989 movie (w/Cruise) than a 1939 movie (w/Stewart). I appreciate films from the first half of the last century but generally prefer more modern movies, though this 1939 movie is one of the best movies of all time.

K, Zachary

I definitely like your way of thinking. This was such a tough call because I love the 60's and Tom Cruise. Jimmy Stewart won me over though I just can't not vote for him. He was a great actor and a awesome human being. His wife Gloria and him contributed tons of money to the L.A. Zoo. That's what ultimately led to me picking Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Clay F

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) was banned in Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's Italy, and in Franco's Spain. Film critic and historian Mike Canning said “they didn’t want to show anything about American democracy." Apparently, when a ban on American films was imposed in German occupied France in 1942, some theaters in occupied France chose to show Mr. Smith Goes to Washington as the last movie before the ban went into effect.

Banning Lobmeyer

It wasn't about the revolution but Gettysburg (1993ish) is about the deadliest battle of the Civil War which started on July 1st and ended on July 4th..but of irony there....and it might be the single most important battle in US history. Would be a good one to check out!

Marja

Although an argument can be made for 1999 (and why not consider both as true?!), for many decades 1939 was considered Hollywood’s truly Golden Year for the highest number of classic films. That year could have its own poll, as could 1999. Film for thought…

Matthew Brown

I think you will really really love jimmy stewart in mr smith goes to Washington

Joe J

Cassie should stop mixing in the older and newer movies. Just have separate polls for each and watch the winner in each. Her YT audience skews much younger than her patreons, so I predict "Mr. Smith" will get low views on YT. It's a great film, but 1939 (haha), IMO can't see much interest on YT. I will be happy if I'm wrong!

Larry Darrell

I was afraid to mention anything about Mr. Smith Goes to Washington winning before the poll ended. Thought I might jinx it. Honestly never thought there would ever be a poll, where the oldest film on the poll, a film from way back in 1939 beat 5 films from the 80s and Up. Including a film with Tom Cruise, a film by Clint Eastwood, a beloved 80s cartoon and a movie by that guy in the American Express commercials. (-: JK… Lin-Manuel Miranda. ;-) Too Cool! Frank Capra is one of the Greatest Filmmakers of All-Time, and I’m thrilled to see him make a return to PiB. His films have only grown more relevant as the years have gone by. I would like to Thank Everyone that voted. You All are Awesome. :-)

Doug R

and possibly next year in the US as well if someone gets elected

When I first started following Cassie there was a good stretch of a year and a half where every movie she watched I had already seen. But now it's much different and she's watching so many movies I've never seen before. I just watched In the Heat of the Night for the first time. Thank you Cassie for branching out and getting me to watch a bunch of movies I've never seen before
