This movie definitely had some great moments, and I love the trope of outsider learning about a new place or culture and the fun that comes with that. I do think parts of it were dated and it didn't quite totally land for me, but overall a great tender November flick!

David Freese

Beverly Hills Cop please soon. Its been #1 on the app forever.

Wes

Eddie Murphy in his prime 🙌 I hope this encourages you to check Beverly Hills Cop too!

V M

Not a movie I'd recommend but alright The other two upcoming movies should be better though

Rosario Cicero

“Please refrain from using anymore obscenities in the presence of these people” “WHAT!?!?”

Katie Jackson

Looking forward to another Tender November poll this month🤞. Plenty of good movies that can still make it before December. My top 2 for the 80's are: *Look Who's Talking *Some Kind Of Wonderful Top 2 for 90's: *Now And Then *Nine Months I guarantee smiles and tears for all of these

Matt Rose

It's good but it's incredibly overrated. I'll take TRADING PLACES, 48 HOURS, BEVERLY HILLS COP, and especially BOWFINGER any day.

Above Average Dave

Thank you for this! Remembrance Day on Monday, Cassie. Any chance we get a PPOTM for MIDWAY (2019) or THE OUTPOST?

Stick Figure Studios

This movie gets by a lot on Eddie Murphy's effortless charm and charisma. It is fun and amusing at times, but I have never loved it, so I have not bothered with the sequel. The multiple characters portrayed by Murphy and the cameo appearance of Duke brothers from TRADING PLACES (also directed by Jonn Landis) was cute though. May watch this reaction. May not. I don't know. Will definitely watch it if you ever react to 48 HOURS, BEVERLY HILLS COP or BOWFINGER (all superior Murphy movies imo).

Cole Jennett

Fun fact, both Akeem and Simba in The Lion King have the same parents

Matt Rose

avoid the sequel. It has a couple of laughs in it but that's it.

Chris Retzlaff

This is a shared universe with Trading Places....the two homeless guys Prince Akeem gives money to is Randolph and Mortimer Duke...absolutely brilliant. We're Back!! Which they do parlay into a fortune. Haven't watch the reaction so if you picked that up, cheers. Lol

Clay F

I may skip this reaction. I don't think I can make it through 2 hours of that forced made-up accent. Coming to America is my least favorite of the early Eddie Murphy. I lke 48 Hours and Trading Places better. The Eddie Murphy star power (independent of how good or entertaining the movie) likely inflated the number of votes received by Coming to America in the poll. The other movies in the poll really didn't stand a chance. Coming to America is arguably a waste of a tender November slot. The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) in the poll is definitely more a tender November movie than Coming to America. The connections between the 3 main characters are very tender. Also, The Peanut Butter Falcon arguably does more for Down syndrome people than any movie in history. Plus, The Peanut Butter Falcon is entertaining and an awesome movie. Has the beautiful Dakota Johnson who is the daughter of Melanie Griffith starring in Working Girl (1988) also in the poll. You can see movements and mannerisms of Dakota Johnson in Melanie Griffith. IMDb 7.6, Metacritic 70%, RT 95% (audience 96%) = Peanut Butter Falcon (2019) IMDb 7.1, Metacritic 47%, RT 73% (audience 85%) = Coming to America (1988) Coming to America is okay for a first watch to see Eddie Murphy in action, but several other movies in the poll are better.

Matt Rose

I disagree that it's mediocre. It does have a few really big laughs in it and the script is actually very structurally sound. I just find it to be too self-indulgent and 'try hard' in many parts (the barbershop stuff, for instance) and a lot of the humor is simply lazy.

Stick Figure Studios

Agreed, VM... especially when compared with something like CROCODILE DUNDEE.

Matt Rose

PEANUT BUTTER FALCON was a real surprise. I almost skipped it just because of the stupid title, but it's a really effective and charming film with a lot of heart to it. Cassie would love it.

Bill Maurer

Yup, 48 Hrs is better, in my opinion. But Beverly Hills Cop is great

ShazD

Agree that it's dated

Walter

dang, my least favorite of this week's choices is first out of the gate. Yeah, I loved this movie when it came out and I was 15. I just don't think most of the Eddie Murphy movies from back then have aged all that well. A few notable exceptions (the first Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours). But that's just my humble opinion.

Tara ✨💫

Some Kind of Wonderful is right up Cassie’s alley for Tender November

Walter

I mentioned Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hours as my personal favorites, but thank you for reminding me of Bowfinger! Another real gem

Matt Rose

For my money, BOWFINGER is Murphy's best film and possibly Martin's best film (it's between this and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS). Just a well written, well performed laugh machine.

shaneth138

Yeah I’m skipping this one. Don’t understand why it won the poll with it being so out dated and not really being a tender movie. Please do The Peanut Butter Falcon! A much better tender selection than Coming to America.

Shawn Kildal

This was probably going to be Cassie's least favorite from the poll. An Officer and a Gentleman, Working Girl and and in particular Sense and Sensibility for sure (she said she's seen Pride and Prejudice many times over). I liked Coming to America though, it was probably going to get reacted to at some point. I think it would have fit better on a comedy poll instead of a Tender November one.

zynjams

an officer and a gentleman is a must watch

shaneth138

Ha I’m pushing for Peanut Butter Falcon too! Always thought it would be a perfect reaction movie for Cassie but never thought it would ever be on her radar. Glad that it is now at least!

rakesh

Eddie Murphy was fire back in the day. Loved this movie when I was a kid. Won't see the sequel though, something's are better left alone.

Verteron

Bah, I was looking forward to what I thought was going to be dropping first for the last two days. Figures nothing has gone my way today. The wait continues...

Clay F

Sense and Sensibility is the best quality movie in the poll. An Officer and a Gentleman should be watched because was part of our culture -- my ex-wife and daughter love the ending. Coming to America is forgettable. Working Girl is somewhat dated but good. The Peanut Butter Falcon is my favorite in the poll.

rakesh

And if you want a movie for tender November. My vote is for Green Card, A romcom staring Gérard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell.

Clay F

To me, really the only good thing about Coming to America is it has the comedic genius Eddie Murphy. Not enough for me to rewatch the movie.

Nick Ireland

I feel like every poll has 90% movies which are on theme and a random movie that should not have been included, which then goes on to win the poll lol. There seems to be lots of members who feel nostalgic for these 80s movies which have not aged well - this movie, Highlander, Big Trouble in Little China etc. Not judging anybody's taste but there was literally 9 other movies in the "tender" poll that you would have loved and would have made a better reaction.

Dean Holt

Wow, I know we all have different opinions but Coming to America and Beverly Hills Cop are still very funny movies Imo and two of Eddies best.

Clay F

I agree with Bill. 48 Hours is better, but Beverly Hills Cop is good. Neither are applicable for tender November. I sure hope we don't get another Eddie Murphy movie in November.

Shad Kanyak

“I feel like we’re watching a Disney movie” lol. Swing and a miss.

Walter

absolutely! And I agree with half of that

JL_83

Axel Foley is so lucky to have had King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi as his parents

Stick Figure Studios

Agreed. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug and it makes a lot of mediocre movies from our childhood seem better than they really are.

Mark Duedall

My poll selection of An Officer and a Gentlemen did not win. Allegedly. There was no option for a recount of the ballots. No audit trail. I must conclude the vote was rigged. It is not possible that my selected choice lost. Losing faith in the Democratic experience of PIB Patreon. I will hold out hope for the next poll.

Stick Figure Studios

I agree. It's not bad, but just about any other movie on that poll would have been better than this one.

Cole Jennett

Eddie Murphy does play multiple roles, as does Arsenio Hall. Eddie Murphy is the barber, the old Jewish man, and the singer at the Black Awareness pageant. You missed the credits, where you would have realized it.

Stick Figure Studios

I really liked PEANUT BUTTER FALCON. COMING TO AMERICA I did not (though I didn't hate it either; just found it incredibly overpraised when I finally watched it a few years ago).

Dean Holt

This and Beverly Hills Cop are two of Eddies best movies Imo. They just don’t make comedy’s like this anymore and it’s a shame. The last two really funny movies that got made are for me are Tropic Thunder and The Hangover. It’s absolutely fine if some of it didn’t connect with you as comedy is very subjective but I’m still looking forward to your reaction and see if you spotted Sam Jackson and a very young Cuba Gooding Jr and if you picked up on them both playing multiple characters. As the barber shop scenes are some of my favourite parts.

Mike Lemon

Amazing. Somehow a movie wins a poll yet, seemingly, everyone hates it (after it gets an "ehh...It's okay" from Cassie).

Stick Figure Studios

I also hope she just ups and picks MIDNIGHT RUN (which is from the same director as BEVERLY HILLS COP) for a PPOTM at some point (and she said she almost chose it instead of BIG FISH from my five suggested titles).

Stick Figure Studios

I think there's a big disparity between the number of patrons who vote in the poll and the number of patrons who actually leave comments.

Clay F

True, but my comments are consistent with my comments regarding Coming to America before the reaction.

David Crabtree

Love this movie! The comedy is probably funnier today than it was in 1988!

Clay F

I think Coming to America is okay for a first watch to see Eddie Murphy in action.

David Freese

I'm sure that the whole month isn't going to be rom coms and tender movies. Just like October had other types of movies than horror.

shaneth138

It really is. Which is unfortunate because there are so many great movies post 2010 that pretty much never win polls because of that nostalgia.

Stick Figure Studios

@Clay: Also some people maybe just don't want to "poison the well," so they keep their critical comments for afterwards.

Cole Jennett

Another fun fact. Darryl the Prince of Soul Glo is the same actor who plays the father of the family they stay with in LOGAN.

Stick Figure Studios

I lost faith a long time ago in the majority of both the Patreon members and the YouTube subscribers.

Walter

YES! I had forgotten that one. Great movie.

Cole Jennett

I was highly anticipating seeing whether you picked up on who the two homeless gentlemen were or not! I won’t spoil for others whether you did or not.

Shehab Dawoud

Definitely a classic and a rewatchable. Does nostalgia raise it above the level of the actual movie itself? Of course. But you can say that for so many films. One area where it definitely hasn’t aged well is in the portrayal of Africa and Africans. Even more so in these times where people are just standing in line to be offended about things. It also helps if you are somewhat versed in black culture to fully appreciate this one. That’s where you were probably lacking and therefore didn’t get or appreciate it more. But you found the experience positive overall, that’s always good! More Eddie would be nice. Everyone’s throwing out the big ones (Cop, 48 Hrs, Boomerang, etc). Two of my personal favorites are ‘Life’ (1999) with Martin Lawrence and ‘Vampire in Brooklyn’ (1995). The latter would be a good one next October.

Philip Alan

Awwww, your version of the movie cut off all the credits. I was hoping you'd see how many characters Eddie & Arsenio played! It's okay you didn't like the movie! :)

MikeLL

There is more fourth wall breaking in this movie than in a whole season of SNL! Great reaction! Don't care how you like the movie as a whole, you both reacted very well to all the great parts! OH, but how could you have cut the credits short when you said you wanted to see how many parts Eddie Murphy played, and it was about to show you just that! How could you? LOL But that is set aside and Cassie really did earn mega bonus points from recognizing the brothers from Trading Places! That is the part everyone watching was waiting for, and Cass did not disappoint there!

aarswft

You shouldn't have stopped the credits. You missed the reveal.

Cole Jennett

I made a post earlier having just watched the outtro, but then I finished the reaction and thought I’d have to delete my comment because she did say that she was going to watch, and then abruptly stopped, lol. Probably Carly said she had to get going😂. World’s shortest outtro too.

Cole Jennett

She never said she didn’t like it, just that the first half was slow.

Ib-René Jørgensen

I love this movie, I hope you will check out more of his movies, like 48 hours and Beverly Hills Cop 2.

Cole Jennett

Carly was probably itching to get going, lol

MikeLL

To me Coming To America and Beverly Hills Cop both hold up over time, it is 48 Hours that I think is dated! 😀 Everything about the comedy of Coming To America just hits right. John Landis is just such a fantastic comedy director.

Cole Jennett

Always find it funny how many people show up in the comments just to trash it. It’s not good enough to just whine in the comments of the poll that it won, you have to ruin it for the people who like it here too.

MikeLL

Very great comment, Mike. To me this was a fantastic reaction to a really funny movie. And all the comments saying this is not a tender movie. Any movie that ends in a wedding, and this is a royal wedding at that, would make it a tender movie in Cassie's eyes!

Philip Alan

She didn't have to say it. I can see it in her reaction and end comments. It's okay! I was just so HAPPY she recognized the TRADING PLACES characters! That was a WIN! :)

MikeLL

I like this movie and the comments are not ruining it for me, but I am very surprised at some of the negative comments. This is an excellent comedy that has always clicked for me, and it definitely holds up over the years. And I think it perfectly fits the Tender November theme!

crazyivan

I loved this movie when it came out and still love it. It was an eighties Eddie Murphy classic and his and Arsenio Hall's barber shop scenes are wicked funny. You need to watch The Nutty Professor (1996) just for the scene with Eddie and a young Dave Chappelle.

Dan M

I am so looking forward to seeing you laugh again instead of hiding underneath your blanket and squeezing the stuffing out of your popcorn plushie. Eddie Murphy in his prime was pure comic genius. Were you able to spot how many different characters he was playing before the end credits rolled? Actually, you usually stop the movie when the end credits start, so you may not have even seen all of that.

Uncle Phoenix

I really did enjoyed the moment when Cassie remembered Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy.

Dan M

Yeah, I just don’t get that. It’s fine if you’re not a fan of movie or a series, but just keep the negative comments to yourself. It’s one thing to critique a movie, which can be constructive. It’s another to just bash it completely on a channel like this. I think it’s safe to say that not everyone is going to like every single movie or series reacted to on this or any other reactor’s channel. That’s unrealistic. But you know how that old saying goes…If you don’t have any nice or positive to say, just don’t say anything at all.

Dan M

Didn’t even catch that. And I’ve seen this movie at least a dozen times.

Cole Jennett

I saw this movie in the theater when I was 11. My Aunt had to phone the theater to let me and my cousin in because it was 14A. Small towns😂 So whenever I saw him on E.R. I always thought of him as the Soul Glo guy, lol.

Johnny Bullis

I loved your reaction to the bath tub scene at the beginning.. priceless to see your jaws drop. I dont know if you watched the full end credits but Eddie Murphy was the Barber.. the old Jewish guy in the barber shop.. the lead singer to Sexual Chocolate and Arsenio Hall was the other barber.. the preacher and the woman at the bar scene. Someone else mentioned it but I also am fascinated by the fact that his parents in this, James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair are also the voices of Mufasa and Sarabi in the Lion King. Kind of perfect casting in my opinion.

Dan M

Agreed. I have it on my list of movies that are perfect for Tender November.

Dan M

Isn’t any movie that was made more than 10 years ago “dated”?

Vwlss Nvwls

My brother and I saw this in the theater together when he was visiting. One of my favorite movie going experiences. Such a fun movie and memory.

Dan M

I suggested a theme week during the live watch along of Cabin in the Woods. Nine Months, She’s Having a Baby, and Look Who’s Talking. Cassie spotted it and seemed to like the idea. I’m hoping she remembered it and will make it part of Tender November, or even for the beginning of December. 🤞

Katie Jackson

I love the idea, 3 movies about babies, plus plenty of comedy and tender moments. It should be right up Cassie's alley. She could have Carly join if she wants to, since there wasn't much for Carly to watch in October.🤞❤️🤞

LukeG84

Omg, the ending of this reaction was so frustrating. Cassie you really need to start watching the credits. You always turn them off way too soon. If you had continued watching a little you would have seen all the characters Eddie Murphy played in this movie, and you would have been shocked. I literally shouted at the screen when the first one came up and you both looked away. Completely ruined the reaction for me. P.s. I'm super impressed Cassie got the Trading Places cameo. I missed that the first time I watched this movie all those years ago.

Joe J

@Stick Figure Studios, Yeah reality check! 3500+ patrons can vote in polls, 99% of them never post comments. The comment section is a closed loop of about 20-30 of us (haha).

Joe J

A "Tropic Thunder" reaction would be one for the ages (haha), sadly for us Cassie has seen it before the channel.

FBA Seller (edited)

2026-11-01 00:00 you skipped the end to see all the parts Eddie played.. he was so many people and you skipped it.
2024-11-08 03:26

Joe J

"Not aged well" refers to cheese, not movies (haha). All movies reflect the times in which they are made, which has nothing at all to do with the enjoyment people derive from those movies.

Joe J

@Stick, We elite patrons must indeed suffer the indignity of these unwashed hordes...the nerve of these noobs and they're itchy voting fingers.😆

Vwlss Nvwls

I cannot believe you did not watch the credits to see all the roles that Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall played!!!! That is one of the best parts, and the last part would amaze you.

David Freese

I'm one those noobs and I'm in the butter tier. If you're being serious you need to stop insulting people in the community

Joe J

You guys really know how to take the fun out of things, lol.

David Freese

They are both good but BHC is so much funnier.

Joe J

What can you expect from someone who disliked Highlander.😢

Larry Darrell

I’d wager Beverly Hills Cop (1984) has more Tender moments than Coming to America. :-)

Larry Darrell

@Dan M - With all do respect… NO.

Larry Darrell

+1 for Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)

Larry Darrell

@Mike LL - normally I would agree on any film ending in a wedding, but this one didn’t stick the landing in my opinion. There should have been another scene before the wedding, showing her realization that she does love Akeem and wants to be with him. The surprise, “I’m under the veil,” moment at the last minute was just a little too… quick I guess. In the words of Cassie, “I wanted more.”

Joe J

Cassie mixes up many of her polls with movies that just don't fit with the stated criteria, why does she do that?

Joe J

An officer and a gentleman is the only one I wanted out of the bunch.

Jason Pratt

To continue with the Disney connection, not only did the King, James Earl Jones voice Mufasa, the Queen, Madge Sinclair was the voice of Sarabi in Lion King also.

V M

The people complaining about being insulted silently insult us by refusing to vote for our good movies :P

V M
>>154660384

It may not be her doing it, but yes, polls titled "Tender November" include movies that arent so tender.

Robert da Spruce

Fun movie and reaction ladies! I grew up with this movie so it holds a lot of nostalgia for me. And it still holds up today for the most part. But I can understand you guys not liking a lot of the other characters dialogue viewing it today. There is a lot of chauvinistic talk by the other male characters. Especially early on. I almost gave up hope you were going to recognize Randolph and Mortimer from Trading Places Cassie. But then I saw that moment of recognition in your face! 😄 So that was nice! As others have mentioned, Eddie and Arsenio did play many roles in the film. It would have been cool if you watched the credits. But it’s Ok I’m just happy were done with all the scary movies 😉

Larry Darrell

“Eddie Murphy did it first, sorry Hallmark.” Ummmm, hold up, wait a minute. Somethin’ ain’t right. I’m going to give you 3 movies to watch, that have varying degrees of similarity with this film and said “Prince and Me” type Hallmark films. My Man Godfrey (1936) Sullivan’s Travels (1941) It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947) All of these films would be perfect for a Tender November. (More so than This film… sorry.) It Happened on Fifth Avenue would be even more perfect for Christmas time, as it is a Christmas film. All 3 Highly Recommended. For Eddie Murphy, you must watch Beverly Hills Cop (1984). This is the quintessential Eddie Murphy film that made everyone a fan of his. His performance is brilliant and his Charm exudes in every scene. He perfectly blends comedy, action and drama, which was a pre-cursor to the Lethal Weapon and Die Hard films. And you just may find more Tender moments in Beverly Hills Cop than another Eddie Murphy film you’ve seen recently. ;-) The character of Darryl in this film, was played by actor Eriq La Salle. You both saw him recently in Logan (2017) as Will Munson, the farmer who took in Logan and his family. The character of Darryl was certainly unlikeable in this film, but if you ever get around to watching the awesome TV show, E.R., you will see him in a much better light. The character from E.R., Dr. Peter Benton of surgery, is a complicated one. He may seem a tad arrogant at times, but give him a chance. Give the whole show a chance. You’ll get hooked, I know it. (Obviously not for reacting to. :-) Lastly… don’t know if you know who Jackie Wilson is. You heard him in this film when Akeem asked Lisa to dance, and the song again when Akeem was singing in the streets. (My favorite scenes by the way.) He was one of the Greatest Voices ever and when he sang, he could lift your spirits higher… and higher ;-) “To Be Loved,” from Coming to America - (1958) https://youtu.be/ICJllEvQKdU?si=isw0uzEsGOY7335t “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher,” from Ghostbusters II (1989) and Date Night (2010) - (1967) https://youtu.be/Gn6SNbTD0_Q?si=zqQs8tXVDlr7ZgoV “Lonely Teardrops” - (1958) https://youtu.be/eSqf_AkUka4?si=JOMXxvXkEEO9O79e

It's impossible to please everyone. Some will like this but not that, and others that but not this, and etc.

rakesh
>>154660016

It's okish. Not my favourite by Hughes prefer pretty in pink instead.

Augustine Lee

Cassie, how do you think the plot of this movie would have been affected if Eddie chose to go to Provo Utah instead of queens New York?

Author Travis Adams Irish
>>154690853

The women in Provo are voracious. I'm texting one right now actually, a little bit further North in Lehi. They seem shy and smiley on the surface, but...they're more like the younger sister of Eddie's girlfriend in the movie. They move fast when they want something, and they're aggressive. So, just imagine Eddie surrounded by women similar to McDowell's younger daughter.

Ryan Towell

Wow you said you wanted to see who all Eddie played and then you turned it off as it was showing you.. He played the prince, the barber, the old "jewish" white guy in the barber shop, the singer. Arsenio Hall played the servant, the Reverand and the lady in the bar that said he wanted both of them.. and the other barber.

Farbod

Unbelievable....

Clarence Newman

Fetch, Dangit and Oh My Freaking Gosh! I love this movie and I want to watch the full reaction with Cassie (and Carly) but I don't have it on DVD and I don't like paying for movies on Netflix and the like when I already pay subscription fees. As Will Smith would say, "TO HELL WITH THEM!!!!!" I'm off to ebay to rebuy the DVD.

Clarence Newman

Excerpt from Cassie's summary: "I do think parts of it were dated and it didn't quite totally land for me....." Ah, but it didn't give you a stress headache, did it? Vive la Novembre!

Augustine Lee

next podcast episode- the literary contributions of Nich-ski by Cassie Popcorn

Ike

This movie is somewhat of an 80’s classic. It is certainly cliche and derivative, but I think it is still HIGHLY quoted even today. The royalty (Zamunda) scenes were a little over-the-top and didn’t age well, but the different characters played by Eddie and Arsenio Hall are still comedy royalty in their own right. I really enjoyed this reaction! Great start to November.

Clarence Newman

I've got this on in the background while I work and I just heard C & C wondering what the barbers are talking about with the "Clays" and the "Cassie's". To clarify, the legendary heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali changed his name from Cassius Clay in 1964. They are arguing about which of the names they prefer to call him. As for the scene where the hood tries to hold up McDowalls, that ploy wouldn't have worked on the 90s Samuel L Jackson. As soon as Eddie walked up and opened his mouth, Sam would've blasted him and said, "I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?"

Mojo One Thousand

Vale James Earl Jones and John Amos. Despite what one thinks about this movie (I have always enjoyed it), without it and Eddie Murphy it is unlikely we would have the legacy that is Samuel L. Jackson's movie career... he has said this himself in interviews. I think this was his first film, and prior to this he was in Eddie Murphy's stand-up special "Raw" which some filmed set pieces at the beginning and end. Congrats to the master that is Rick Baker, the ladies struggled to recognise which characters were Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall... spoiler, Eddie is the old Rocky Marciano fan among other more obvious ones. And, Paula Abdul was involved in choreography of the courtship dance. It is a bit long, but back at that time they were likely taking to full advantage of trying to inject something close to traditional Africa culture into an American movie.

Clarence Newman

Guys. You may want to skip reading the comments on Howard The Duck!

YodatheHobbit

Yeah I was surprised by that too. I think whichever site they were watching the movie on ended the credits abruptly just before it showed them for some reason. Too bad. REACTIONS WE MISSED OUT ON! They suspected Eddie of playing the main barber, singer, and Arsenio of being the woman I think, but I'm sure they HAD NO CLUE that Eddie played the old white guy and Arsenio played the reverend and the other barber.

Clarence Newman

I think there's also a bit of "The film I wanted didn't win the poll and this one beat it so....bollocks."

Clarence Newman

Agreed, David. Unless they voted for Howard the Duck. In which case, they're fair game.

Clarence Newman

"Watch that movie, Seeger! Just watch it!"

Clarence Newman

Look Who's Talking is the only one on my list, but in general, I tend to trust the lady patrons when it comes to tender movie suggestions.

Katie Jackson

Some Kind Of Wonderful is a John Hughes movie, Nine Months has Robin Williams in it (enough said)and Now and Then is similar to Stand By Me with girls.

Clarence Newman

I'm up for Nine Months then, but Dead Poets has got to come first.

Cole Jennett

Just because it’s more appropriate on an Eddie Murphy movie, whenever I see your name I think of the old SNL skit where Eddie Murphy was the 5th Beatle, Clarence. “Hey Paul, let’s get rid of Clarence and steal all his good ideas.”😂

Eddie Perkins

They always do that. it's so irritating.

Popcorn In Bed

the credits automatically shut off on prime for some reason

Popcorn In Bed

the credits turn off automatically for some reason on prime and go to another movie!! we did look it up on imdb after though, i thought we recorded that part, must not have

Popcorn In Bed

the credits shut off automatically! we looked it up on imdb though, i can’t believe he was the jewish guy too!!

Popcorn In Bed

they shut off automatically and went to another movie 🫠

Vwlss Nvwls

Yeah, I hate when streaming services do that. If you do not tell it to stop the upcoming movie or stay on this movie quick enough. Anyhow, it is amazing that Eddie Murphy was playing the white Jewish guy in the barber shop as well as all the barber. :D

Robert da Spruce

No biggie It’s just I saw both you and Carly trying to figure out “Is that Eddie Murphy?” All your questions are answered in the credits! 😊

Clarence Newman

Just watched that on Youtube, Cole. I'm the biggest Beatles fan in the world so any suggestion of a connection to them is gratefully received.

Cole Jennett

I assume you watched “Yesterday?”

Clarence Newman

I have not. I've watched all their movies, read a ton of books over the years and have £20,000 worth of vinyl in my loft, so I don't usually run to watch stuff about or related to them these days. Is it worth 2 hours of my life?

Dan M

Dead Poets Society is another great choice for Tender November. There are several other Robin Williams movies that would be great for this month, including Patch Adams, Bicentennial Man, and Awakenings.

Dan M

So you’ve been fighting for Cassie and Carly to watch An Officer and a Gentleman for quite awhile now, and you’ve just suggested Dead Poets Society. Let me be the first to say it, Clarence, but it seems like you’re just as qualified to suggest movies for Tender November as the ladies are 😉.

Cole Jennett

I enjoyed it but I’m not sure we have the same taste in movies. It is a love letter to The Beatles though

Katie Jackson

I just checked, because I thought Cassie had seen it. Cassie has seen Dead Poets Society before the channel started, it's on her Letterbox ☹️

It's really been surprising how many older movies are not available on any streaming platform. This one is 36 years old! Not sure what they are waiting for. I would think the studios would license these out for SOME revenue!

Chris Retzlaff

Yeah there was a barbar shop scene during credits I figured they would watch.

Chris Retzlaff

If there's a way to add a light bulb or a brick flying at you as a graphic for the YouTube edit, that would be brilliant....you seriously can tell the exact moment she realized who they were.... And in the sequel Colin Jost plays the Dukes Grandson. About the only good thing that came from that

Chris Retzlaff

No one messes with Duck fu...Stick is going to love that one.

Chris Retzlaff

All subjective my dude, I liked all the movies on that poll.

Chris Retzlaff

Update: I watched the reaction and......boom you got it for sure

Dan M

Bummer! Oh well, I’d be just as happy replacing DPS with any of the other Robin Williams movies I suggested. The Best of Times is another good Robin Williams movie, plus it’s got Kurt Russell…and we know Cassie loves Kurt. But I think Patch Adams, Awakenings, and Bicentennial Man are better suited for Tender November.

Chris Retzlaff

Leah Thompson....nuff said. I still have a 40 yr old crush on her..

Chris Retzlaff

Can we get a poll of movies that are purposely put there to see how many negative comments VM and Stick figure can rack up saying the same thing over and over. 🤣🤣

Just Plain Bob

Cassie, regarding the issue with Prime cutting off the credits in favor of starting a new movie, there is a simple solution. If you press the “back” or “previous” button on your remote it will prevent the automatic playing of the next movie and allow you to watch the credits. Unfortunately, the Prime app is sluggish, so I often find that I’ve pressed the button twice, believing the first time didn’t work, and the app will stop playing the video. Amazon needs to do a lot of work, not just on this issue, to make their app more user friendly.

Cole Jennett

They get added and drop off platforms fairly frequently I think. I’ve definitely seen it on streaming services in the past. I own it so wasn’t an issue for me

fish_thefilmcollector

Physical media is where it's at!! I don't have to worry about streaming most of the time.

Mojo One Thousand

Yeah, "Darryl" is played by Eriq La Salle, poor old "Will Munson" in "Logan". And, he will always be the heir to the Soul Glo fortune for me.

John Cranberry

Did someone forget to tell Cassie and Carly that this is a hillarious comedy? I was laughing out loud even though I have seen this move 20 times before. They both looked so confused? Maybe it is the generation gap, but they totally didn't get it. All the jokes went completely over their heads. Such a shame.

Brett Richey

I'm still not sure if they like the movie or not 👀...

Chris Retzlaff

Oh, I can't wait....for those comments, especially when we know "definitely" that they only clicked to bash.

John Cranberry

OK, I have to say what's on my mind. So, after the movie was over, I was trying to work out why Cassie and Carly looked so confused throughout the whole film. This is a hilarious film. I have seen it at least 20 times and I laughed so many times again tonight. But it started to occur to me that Cassie and Carly weren’t really laughing. There was some smiling, Cassie kind of chuckled a little bit. The only thing I can think of besides the obvious generation gap, I’m 55 and I think Cassie maybe around 35 and Carly 26? They didn't grow up at the same time in the same period as me, so that could be part of it. But I can't help feeling that they weren’t laughing because the movie was predominantly coloured people. It felt like they were afraid to start laughing because they thought it would be offensive. As I said in my other comment, someone forgot to tell them that this is a comedy, and Eddie Murphy is one of the top black comedians ever to grace us on this planet. It's such a shame that they were so conservative and didn’t cut loose. Cassie has such a great sense of humour, and I was really looking forward to seeing her laugh hilariously out loud at so many scenes in the film. But she didn’t. I don't know, I’m Australian so to me it feels like a crime not to laugh out loud and clap your hands at the jokes. Did anyone else feel weird about the fact that they looked confused at so many punch lines. Let me know.

crazyivan

Also, Harlem Nights (1989) features Eddie, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx and Della Reese. It's another 80's Eddie Murphy vehicle with a bit of The Sting thrown in for good measure. People seem to forget Eddie was the $h!t in the 80's...Eddie and Robin Williams are the two funniest comedians to ever grace this planet.

Mike Lemon

"But I can't help feeling that they weren’t laughing because the movie was predominantly coloured people." Wow.

Alex

I grew up watching this movie, and it is funny, but for me most of it isn't laugh out loud funny. I feel like it hasn't aged particularly well. And i really don't think the colour of the cast had anything to do with it.

John Cranberry

Please don't quote out of context. Some people just don't get black humour. I grew up with Eddie and his movies. I see the humour in everything he did back then. Neither of them got the humour, even Cassie said the first half was confusing for her.

Shehab Dawoud

I left a comment further down. I said that if you’re not that versed in black culture, which includes the humor, you’re not gonna fully appreciate this. I think that is the case more than them not wanting to offend anyone. And no, no one is accusing anyone of racism. So please don’t go there, if anyone is thinking that.

John Rando

Should be a crime to NOT like this movie. Haven’t seen it in 15-20 years but just watched it again and yep - still a classic! After reading the comments, I wondered if it was another 80s movie that doesn’t age well and sorry people - it was meant to be over the top back then as well. For those of you who think the Africa scenes didn’t age well, it’s a fictional country simulating an African utopia, literally like Wakanda. Do people not know this is a comedy? The messages are great (anti-misogyny, anti-materialism, loving someone for who they are), the comedy is still hilarious, it’s not derivative it’s literally a genre - the negativity here is crazy. One of the top comedies of all time for me. Did I mention the practical makeup, the set design, the perfect casting, the cameos, the performances of Arsenio and Eddie in other costumes, the tie-in to a previous movie… This movie is a 10/10

Chris Thom

Never seen this. Think I've seen some clips of a barbershop or something? And he was doing multiple characters like The Klumps?

Clarence Newman

I don't often laugh out loud at comedies either, but the good ones do make me smile and chuckle a lot. That's enough for me. I actually loved watching Carly in this one. She has such a bright face and, even in subtle ways, it is so animated when she's engaged. I think she really enjoyed the film. Sometimes, it was like watching John Coffey as he takes in Fred and Ginger on the big screen for the first time. Innocent wonder that's always a delight to see in someone you care about. That may be overstating the point, but....you get my drift. Cassie is bound to be a little harder to please these days, but I think she enjoyed most of it too. I don't think it was anything to do with not getting "black" humour either - Eddie didn't have any trouble making us boomer whiteys laugh back in the day - it just wasn't a bullseye for Cassie. Beverly Hills Cop, though.....she'll probably love that one.

Joe J

It is beyond pointless to me how anyone would care in the least how someone else reacts to a film. They didn't laugh enough, they didn't cry enough, they didn't "whatever " enough. Geez...

Joe J

People saying the same things over and over...nah, that never happens here.😆

Cole Jennett

Don’t let the haters fool ya, it’s a fun movie.

Grad

You're gonna need a tenderer December to heal from tender November.

John Cranberry

She hasn't seen Beverly Hills Cop or the Nutty Professor. It would be interesting to see if she gets the humour in both. If they didn't grow up with it, it can feel alien to them. All the comedies she's watched are silly stuff like Hot Fuzz and Bill and Teds and Austin Powers.

crazyivan

Somewhere after the 21st century started, young people lost their sense of humor. Can you imagine if Eddie's Delirious or Raw came out today. He'd be cancelled. I haven't seen this reaction yet, but did she recognize Samuel L. getting beaten up with the mop handle? And this one could've been a tribute movie - both James Earl Jones and John Amos were great in this.

Clay F

Keep a box of tissues handy. The accent may drive you to tears.

Clay F

I appreciate your sentiment but color didn't have anything to do with it. Cassie/Carly didn't hold back -- they just didn't think the movie was that funny. Cassie laughed more with Trading Places (though she wasn't big on the Jamie Lee Curtis 1980s breasts scene). Eddie Murphy is one of the top comedians (no need for the "black" adjective) ever to grace us on this planet. A comedic genius. He did do black/white contrast humor in his 1980s standup and on SNL [e.g., Mister Robinson's Neighborhood (1981)].

Clay F

I am age 61 and have never found the movie that funny. The movie is not horrible, but it's my least favorite of the 1980s Eddie Murphy. I remember when the movie was released and I struggled through the 2 hours of the forced made-up accent. I find 48 Hours and Trading Places both as hilarious. Beverly Hills Cop is probably the most popular early Eddie Murphy.

Clay F

Available to stream on Amazon in the US. I used to collect physical media (first VHS, then DVD) but now I stream. I like not having to worry about a player, wires, remote, etc. Clean. Simple and easy to stream. When I do want to play a DVD (which I almost never do), I have to break out my X-Box.

Clay F

Eddie Murphy standup (profane, groundbreaking, popular -- could be offensive to some): -DELIRIOUS (1983). The album release won Best Comedy Album at the 1984 Grammy Awards. Used the words f*ck 230 times and shit 171 times. In 1996, he released a statement apologizing for his use of the word f*ggot. You can watch for free on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe3aTHXj7u4 -RAW (1987). The highest-grossing stand-up comedy concert film ever released, making $50.5 million in the United States and Canada.

Cole Jennett

I really don’t know what your big issue is with the accent Clay? It’s a made up country, they could have any accent🤷‍♂️

Chris Thom

That thumbnail is kind of reminding me of that movie the Borat guy did.

Clay F

Cole, I am irrational about the accent. For me, it’s like listening to someone scratch their fingernails down the chalkboard.

Cole Jennett

I am equally irrational to your complaints about it😂

Kent

It's totally on brand in 2024 when folks get offended over a fictional African setting in a movie with a nearly 100% ensemble African American cast. Yes, some things by modern standards didn't age well, but we've also forgotten how to laugh at ourselves somewhere along the way. I could only imagine what many would think of Blazing Saddles...

Kent

To be fair, I felt like Carly was smiling and cracking up quite a bit. Cassie didn't seem to really vibe with any of it for the first hour at all...almost looking repulsed at times lol. Some movies you think will hit, just don't /shrug

John Cranberry

There is a very real difference between coloured comedians and white comedians. Especally in that time and how they potrayed themselves in film. I would love to see Cassie watch Delirious...but I fear she would not appreciate the brilliance of it. It's the generation gap and Eddie was a product of his time.

John Cranberry

Apolgizing is crazy for something as masterful as Delirious and RAW.

John Cranberry

Nutty Professor for me. I want Cassie to watch both the Jerry Lewis and then Eddie Murphy version. Fingers crossed.

Carol_White

This isn't even in the top 5 of funniest Eddie Murphy movies.

If we stop breathing, we'll die. If we stop fighting bad movies, the world will die.

Chris Retzlaff

🤣🤣 even when they were made 38 yrs ago.....never give up

Colin Davis

I love this movie so much. All Characters in the Barber Shop are played by Arsenio and Eddie.

Mike Lemon

Except Cuba Gooding Jr.

Larry Darrell

Funniest parts of the film for me were John Amos’ scenes. He had the slapstick down pat. I laughed most when he was on the screen. He was probably the most experienced comedic key actor in the film, since his beginnings working with the great Tim Conway and then the sitcom Good Times. He’s a hell of a dramatic actor too, as Cassie has seen in The West Wing, where he played Admiral Percy Fitzwallace. “Beat that with a stick.” ;-)

Cole Jennett

One of the other employees isn’t played by either of them.

Clay F

Good one. I understand.

Clay F

Yeah, agree would be risky for Cassie to watch Delirious (or Raw). I am not good at predicting with her. I was age 20-25 when Delirious and Raw came out, and loved them. So did many of my friends. We had never seen (or listened) to anything like them before. I was a fan of George Carlin and Richard Pryor.

Clarence Newman

Yes, Clint Smith played Sweets - the little bald guy in the barber shop.

Clay F

Chris, after watching the movie, did you agree with Cassie's positive comments (e.g., "some great moments, and I love the trope of outsider learning" and "overall a great tender November flick"). And/or with her less than positive comments: "I do think parts of it were dated and it didn't quite totally land for me." "The first half was hard for me." ("obnoxious")

crazyivan

Worst? Please. Have you forgotten Best Defense, with Dudley Moore? And the accents bugged you? Why is it that any movie that is based outside of the US (or in outer space), the accent is always british? Eddie's accent was better than Keven Costner's english accent in Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves. And I loved that movie, too. lighten up a little.

crazyivan

Has anyone reminded the ladies how big The Arsenio Hall Show show was, back in the day? His late night talk show was top shelf, for a few years.

Clay F

Not only nostalgia, but the Eddie Murphy star power overwhelmed all other poll candidates.
