I loved loved showing this movie to Carly. I forgot how amazing it was and how gripping it is. I had not rewatched it since the first time, and I think it was even better this time. Story, acting, score, sets, I think nearly a perfect film for me!

[Full Reaction] Gladiator (2000) - With Carly

Comments

Jared Stark

Cassie! It’s 1:22AM 😂😂

Jared Stark

Dolores Claiborne please. Stephen King. Kathy Bates He wrote the book with her in mind after watching her in Misery. It’s her best performance. Dolores Claiborne from 1995 is Stephen King’s favorite adaptation. Danny Elfman does the score. 🖤🩶🤎🩶🤎🖤

Eric Wallace

Oh my ******* god. I assumed you would do this but never ever with Carly. Is she okay?

Zane From Canada

Only movie I ever fell asleep at in the theaters. 😂 Staying up late playing videogames the night before at 12 years old took its toll. 😴🥱

Matt

Have you guys seen Ridley Scott's "Kingdom Of Heaven" you might enjoy that too

Clarence Newman

Yeeha, been looking forward to this. You haven't mentioned it in your post, but I'm intrigued to see how much time Carly spends under her blanket.

Matt

Hans Zimmer's score is so amazing in this particularly Lisa Gerrard's voice 😭 so beautiful

Vlad D

I'm just too tired to watch this right now. I'll have something to look forward for tomorrow

Rick Rodriguez

Can't wait to watch. But I must. Tomorrow

Sahitya

This is one of those rare populist films that only gets better every time you watch it. I can't believe back in college when I first saw it I actually didn't get the hype and felt disappointed. It was only after watching it a 2nd time nearly a decade later and then a 3rd time that it really came alive for me. No one can top peak Russell Crowe in this role and he's only matched by Joaquin Phoenix. It's become a downright classic.

Night King01

I find it funny how Cassie points out how the people arent upset at how unfair it is. If you research on roman gladiators you come to find out not a lot of people died. In fact considering how the games are the described in the sources this film would be viewed by the public as very unfair and unsportsmanlike.

TheSingulatarian

This never worked for me. It was alright but I never understood the widespread enthusiasm.

Raven Dark

I haven't watched the reaction yet (deadlines have to be met first), but I listened to your thoughts after because I had to see if Carley liked this one. So glad she did, and can't wait to watch! When I joined this channel, I remember how Cassie used to say she once only watched movies with happy endings. How the H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks did we get here?? Wow.

Shane Drum

Looking forward to Cassie and Carly's reactions here....especially to the brutal violence haha....Hope you both enjoy it....little tidbit, when Rusty accepted the Oscar for this movie, he was wearing a little rabbit pin for the football (Rugby League) team he ended up becoming part owner of a few years later, my team, the Mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs.....go the bunnies 2025!

JL_83

My name is Popcorn in Bed…and I will watch my movies, in this life or the next 😉

Shane Drum

So, im 11mins into the movie and can stop laughing at how Carly half flinches at some of the fight scenes, like she's about to be hit herself hahaha....ahh, love it....looking forward to the rest of the movie

Chris Clarke

Forgive me if you already spotted it Cassie, but Richard Harris (the emperor) also played Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films.

Rose

“Now We Are Free” - Lisa Gerrard’s heavenly voice with Hans Zimmer’s original score is absolute perfection. She sung it in her “language of the Heart” which she created at a very young age as her way to communicate with God. Her live performance of this song from Vienna is chill-inducing. I hope to experience one of her performances in the near future because her vocal range is insane. I was 10 when my parents and I visited the Colosseum. I didn’t appreciate walking inside it at the time but I would love to revisit someday. One of the most famous gladiators (he never fought in the Colosseum because it was built after his death) was Spartacus. One day I hope you’ll eventually see “Spartacus” - which is a Stanley Kubrick and Kirk Douglas classic!

Brian McGovern

Carly’s reaction when she realises the relationship between Commodus and Lucilla. “ OOOHHH That’s his sister?”😂 Cassie got a kick out of it too.

Clay F

One of my favorite movies. “Commodus is not a moral man." Agree that Joaquin Phoenix did excellent. He is a crazy good actor. His character's sister (Lucilla played by Connie Nielsen) is pretty and convincing in her feelings of terror. Of course, Russell Crowe nailed his character from beginning to end. I know nothing of Gladiator 2, except that Paul Mescal is in it. I will be curious to see if Rome is ruled by an emperor or instead is a republic governed by the senate with no emperor. By the way, Paul Mescal is good in Normal People (2020) (1 season), which is an awesome series.

Dan M

One of my favorite movies, revisited by Cassie for the first time in almost 5 years, and seen for the first time by Carly. What a reaction this is going to be! This day can’t go quick enough so I can join in on the fun.

Clarence Newman
>>161864047

Spartacus definitely. An oiled-up Kirk Douglas with a chin dimple you could park your bike in.

Dan M

“What we do in life, echoes in eternity.” One of my favorite movie quotes of all time.

Dan M

The ending of this movie is one of the most moving I have ever experienced, and it brings me to tears every single time I watch it, aided considerably by three pieces of music by Hans Zimmer that are absolutely beautiful…Elysium, Honor Him, and Now We Are Free. I have all three on a playlist that I listen to constantly.

Katie Jackson

I remember Gladiator being a good movie but I haven't watched it since around the time it came out. I was quite a bit younger then(16)😆so it'll be interesting to see it from a new perspective. Joaquin Phoenix is an exceptional actor. I recommend one of my favorite movies by him, Walk The Line. Joaquin plays Johnny Cash. It's a great movie with a little slice of music history in it.

bgb1975 (Brian)

Unpopular opinion: solid movie, but I still like "Troy" better. I remember that "Gladiator" was the first movie I saw where I noticed that lots of directors started to shoot movie action sequences differently. The war sequence at the beginning of the movie was shot so quickly - brief one-second shot-after-shot - that I couldn't really follow what was going on. I also noticed it in one of the Daniel Craig Bond films - there was an opening sequence chase/fight scene, and the shots changed so quickly that I could barely tell who was who. A buddy told me that apparently there is some kind of research out there that says that the human brain reacts positively to that kind of action. I personally find it incredibly irritating. Has anyone else noticed this? Or am I just getting old?

Chris Clarke

I think it's quite well known, but Oliver Reed ("Shadows and dust!") died during filming, and they had to tweak the closing scenes in consequence. An extraordinary actor, but a very troubled and volatile personality. See The Three Musketeers (1973) for more of his best work. He was also a very malevolent Bill Sykes in Oliver Twist (not sure which year). Great reactions as always, ladies: some very telling comments about war etc.

Ike

"My name is... " One of the best lines in cinema. Yep, ya both felt it.

Mike Lemon
>>161869131

"Has anyone else noticed this? Or am I just getting old?" Yes and yes, and I'm right there with you.

Mojo One Thousand

I enjoyed this, this might be fun new concept... it happened a little bit with the "Deadpool" movies, but re-watching some these types of movies with Carly on-board could be a fun ride (still very much some limits). Part of it is that Cassie can't remember parts of the movies as she had only seen them once, almost works as a new reaction, but with a greater cinematic foundation now. There was about 30-ish minutes where Cassie knows what happens and doesn't want to give away anything hearing Carly's theories (which were mostly pretty good), and then Cassie is in the dark and they both are enjoying a great movie. I don't know how this works for other movies though as this is tied to the sequel and so was "Deadpool" (along withthe remainder of the "X-men". "Maximus" spent a significant amount of his life killing just to get back to his family, the only thing that changed was for whom it was being done. It was really only the death of "Commondus" where he was doing it for himself. Tomas Arana played "Quintus" not John Malkovich, he has been in a couple of things of the channel, this was discussed a bit in the "Conspiracy Theory" YT premiere, "The Hunt for Red October" and "The Bodyguard" are a couple but there is likely more. This is the second movie in as many days where an actor passed away before its release, and in this case it was during the production. Oliver Reed who played "Proximo" passed away while they were shooting, in Malta I think, while drinking in a bar. He was quite a colourful fellow by all accounts, but it was still quite sad. He is replaced in some scenes with CGI, or a stand-in, and is one of the earliest times I can recall where CGI was used like this. Also, because the ladies raised the question of loyalty of the men that fought for "Maximus" in Germania. The men "Commondus" that were sent to execute "Maximus" were the Praetorian guard, so they were the Emperor's personal bodyguard and not "Maximus'" men that he fought with. They serve at the pleasure of the Emperor and is why they carried out the order, and "Quintus" gave "Maximus" up for the position of leading those men. I pretty sure some is probably repeated on the original posting of "Gladiator" from the first time Cassie saw it.

Alex Gorell

Easily one of my top 10 favorite movies.

Mike Lemon

A couple things- Some of the people were real, the story not so much. I think Carly might like Marcus Aurelius' book - Meditations. Maggots in a wound can be a good thing. I saw a show about Gettysburg a long time ago and one of the people was telling how the South had a better survival rate for some of the wounds because they ran out of bandages. Apparently the flies got in the wounds, flies lead to maggots, and the maggots ate all the dead flesh, keeping everything cleaner and healing better. I don't know about this time period specifically, but gladiators weren't throw away entertainment. It's expensive to keep and train somebody, so they took care of them and developed incredible medical knowledge to keep them healthy. They were doing things like cataract surgery back then.

Michael West

This is a great movie. One of my favorites. Another great reaction.

Wesley White

This was a very fun re-watch Cassie, and to bring Carly in the mix, just made it even more fun! This was totally worth staying up to 4:30 in the morning, and pretty soon I'll be on vacation for nearly a week in Vegas lol! This movie is in my Top 100 favorite movies of all time! I joke when I say this, but that one part during the first fight in the Colesseum you're all like "Will you stop!" I'm all like, "Oh c'mon Cassie, you've seen way worse blood shed in movies then that!", like I said, I joke lol! Me on the other hand, these are the kind of movies I love watching, battles between two opposing armies, swords clashing, and of course the Gladiator battles in the Colesseum, my adrenaline gets pumped, it is GLORIOUS!!!!! lol😂 Most of this movie is fictional, but there was a Roman Emperor named Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus! In real life he was co-Emperor with his son, until he died, then Commodus took over, but he only ruled Rome for 3 years until his death (by assassination) and he had an older sister Lucilla! So basically few of the characters were based on real people, while most others were made up for the film! It wasn't unusual for animals to be brought into the Colesseum for Gladiators to fight, it was a different challenge every day, Gladiator vs Gladiator, Gladiator vs Beast, etc. And Gladiatoral games were all about reenactments of famous battles that the Roman Legions did in their conquest for the Empire! While you may think it's barbaric to have people watch Gladiators fight to the death, back then it was considered to be honorable! To fight and die with honor to please the people of Rome! Might as well pin-point, even though I think others may have already said this to you in your first reaction, Richard Harris who plays Marcus Aurelius in this movie, he was also the OG Dumbledor in the first two Harry Potter films before he passed away, and he was in The Count of Monte Cristo, he played the priest who gave Edmond the location of the buried treasure, just thought I'd point that out lol! I'm looking forward to you and Carly reating to "GLADIATOR II" I saw it in the theater, it was good, but not as good as this one! No spoilers, but I will say that the second is a continuation of the first one, we the audience follow the little boy Lucius when he's all grown up, that's all I'll say about that without spoiling anything else lol! If I may suggest Cassie, I'd love to see you do a re-watch of "THE HOBBIT" trilogy with Carly along-side! I know she said during your re-watch LOTR reaction with Carly that she has seen The Hobbit, but I don't thinks she may have seen all of it considering she only mentioned a few details in the first two films, but other than that, it would be so cool to see you two do that together! Hope you and the family are doing well, love and support always, thanks again for this reaction, I enjoyed it! You and Carly are the best, wish me luck when I leave for Vegas Tuesday morning lol! And God bless y'all and the family🥰😇🙏🤗😁😉✌👍🌹

I have the same 3 on my playlist as well, plus all of The Last Samurai soundtrack. Hans Zimmer makes some incredible music!

Wes

Are you not entertained!

Clarence Newman

Our North American friends may not get this one, but when Maximus collapses at the end of the film, that's got to be the best unbroken fall since Del Boy fell through the bar in Only Fools and Horses.

Augustine Lee

was this reaction sponsored by swig? what's carly's go to swig order?

Clarence Newman
>>161871561

I understand the need to cut a film down, Mike, but that scene where Commodus stands in front of the firing squad archers was too good to leave out.

Above Average Dave
>>161869131

BOURNE IDENTITY et al also did the super-quick cuts between shots and action to simulate/stimulate action and motion. As someone who'd done sparring, open fighting and being in some situations I can say it was alternately off putting and affirming. Many times when things get real, motion can seem to slow down. Other times, the adrenaline is so jacked that it's frenetic. The super-quick cuts give the feel of the latter, but fail at the former. There is a point in the opening battle, though, where the scene goes slow-mo as Maximus turns and see his life hangs in the balance. I can say I've experienced that exact perception three times in life-threatening moments. Everything slowed down. And all three are pretty dang clear in my mind decades later. I've talked to several others who've had similar experiences, from combat to auto accidents. The brain and CNS are amazing.

Hope you are feeling better, Katie! I WALK THE LINE is a great movie and Reece Witherspoon crushes it as June Carter. Of course, any movie featuring Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash music heavily in the sountrack starts out as an 8 and can only go up from there. After we saw that film, my wife, who is no fan of country music, immediately asked me for playlists of Johnny Cash and his duets with June Carter Cash. RIP and God bless to both.

Above Average Dave

Russell Crowe recently was quoted in some podcast that, to this day, he never has to pay for a meal in Rome because of GLADIATOR.

Above Average Dave

Cassie - Just curious, how do you think your experience and appreciation of this film has been affected and changed by watching more than 400 other movies between watch 1 and watch 2?

Dan M
>>161867692

Yes! Totally agree! The Last Samurai has an amazing soundtrack as well.

Dan M
>>161868390

One of the first clues for me that Joaquin Phoenix was going to be an amazing actor was his role as Gary in Parenthood. His reaction when he calls his father to ask if he can stay with him for awhile, and his father apparently says no, just destroys me.

Dan M
>>161864047

I heard the live performance in Vienna not too long ago…WOW!

Dan M

So this is another reaction where Cassie had seen the movie already, and Carly had not. The others that I remember like this were The Lion King and The LOTR trilogy. I love this concept, and I hope we get more reactions like this for movies that Cassie has seen way back in the infancy of PiB, or prior to PiB, and Carly joins in for the rewatch. Just some suggestions that I think would be great revisits: Forrest Gump Grease The Shawshank Redemption The Green Mile Love Actually Pirates of the Caribbean

Dan M
>>161868390

Glad to hear, Katie! The way you described it, it sounded like a really nasty fall. Hope you’re fully recovered soon.

djKENTO

Anyone know which cut of the film this is?

Odd Thomas

I just watched this like two days ago, lol. Here we go again!

Cole Jennett
>>161896117

I’d like to see Carly watch Maverick with Cassie. I think we forget that Cassie more often than not doesn’t rewatch most of the movies she has seen on here because of lack of time. Also, Twister was another example alongside LOTR.

Cole Jennett
>>161896117

The top of my list for Cassie rewatches alongside Forrest Gump, are Good Will Hunting and The Imitation Game.

Clay F
>>161896117

My top are: Forrest Gump Good Will Hunting The Shawshank Redemption The Green Mile Band of Brothers. If Carly can handle We Were Soldiers, she can handle BoB, especially with liking the brotherhood. Cassie knew little of the war genre or military stuff when she reacted to BoB almost 4 years ago.

Uncle Phoenix

So Happy. Imagine how awesome it would be if you showed Carly “300”.

Dan M
>>161896117

Yes! Good Will Hunting would make for a great rewatch as well! Good choice, Cole. 👍

Augustine Lee

Cassie thinking there’s no way gladiator 2 will suck is how the rest of the country felt before watching the sequel last year as well

Milton William Burray

And now after spending 1 ½ hours trying to find a theatrical cut of the movie I'm ready to watch the 2 ½ hour movie!

Jaccob Cortes

Looks like we got to get a Carley/Cassie watch of Blood Diamond...

Jason Dolan

Would love to see you watch THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION with Carly if she has not seen it. Can we make a list of all the great movies on your channel that Carly has NOT seen?

Damon

I quite enjoy watching you and Carly react to movies. Has Carly ever thought of perhaps making her own reaction channel? :)

Dean Holt
>>161919623

I’d definitely second that, also add Back to the Future & Raiders of the Lost Ark

Dean Holt
>>161917003

Tbh not watched the 2nd one yet, but with Scott’s current record I wasn’t really expecting to much lol.

Dean Holt

This is a epic movie and I really enjoyed rewatching it. Its not in my top 5 though, but it would probably be in my top 50. Another film about a Roman that I like is Centurion with Michael Fassbender.

Bill Maurer

I think it's a good time for the girls to watch "Spartacus" with Kirk Douglas

Brent Petty
>>161919623

Lethal Weapon series, The Fugitive, Apollo 13, Jojo Rabbit, The Sixth Sense, Master and Commander, Shutter Island, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Maverick, A Few Good Men, October Sky, and Grand Torino.

Brent Petty
>>161859004

Yes. Maybe the best director's cut of any film. Great soundtrack as well. Plus Eva Green...

Chris Thom
>>161919623

Carly mentioned that she saw it in school and it scarred her. On the podcast.

Mike Lemon
>>161919623

Not only can we watch the same movies that are on every channel, but we can do it twice!? Can we not do that and instead have variety? There are thousands of movies out there, let's watch those.

Story Archer

@Cassie - I know you don't do this very often, and it takes a really special circumstance to even consider it, but you have GOT to rewatch Firefly/Serenity with Carli... how can you not share Mal and Wash and Book and Jayne and Simon with her? She's a good girl, she DESERVES Firefly. :)

Alex Moore

Stop eating into microphones

Chris Thom
>>161924967

Pretty sure she teaches full time. But she does have a podcast with Cassie if you haven't seen it yet. Popcorn To Go.

Story Archer

I'm only 15 minutes in, but how has Carli not realized that Marcus Aurelius is being played by Richard Harris, the same actor who played Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies before he died? RIP.

Brian's Dog

Rarely are re-watch reactions as great as this one. Loved it.

TheSingulatarian
>>161935673

Bunnytails just did a reaction on that one. She liked it. Cassie should watch Spartacus, Cleopatra, The I, Claudias TV series and Quo Vadis. She will get a full history lesson on the early Roman Empire.

Chris Thom

Rewatching this movie I'm always struck by how good the music is. A good score adds so much to the experience. Also I was watching a vid on the production of the movie the other day and was shocked that some of it was filmed in Alabama...?!?

Chris Thom
>>161858737

Oh cool I didn't know he wrote it for her specifically. But that makes sense.

Chris Thom
>>161869713

I didn't know much about Oliver Reed until quite a bit after this came out. But even knowing now, I barely recognize him here.

David Freese

Sorry I'm being a negative sour puss but ..... as entertaining as rewatches are with Carly, they are better in small doses. The channel isn't PIB rewatches in Bed. Let's stay on the course of PIB and sis watch stuff new to both of them. That way when we get a rewatch for one reason or another its a special reaction. Just my thoughts.

David Freese
>>161858784

She did do this early in the channel I think like spring of 21. This was a rewatch with Carly watching it for the first time.

JohnnyUtah

Over/under on how many times Carly says "oh fetch" 20?

BibbitduBois
>>161949896

I'm not sure we have numbers big enough to cover the over of her looking away and saying "nope, absolutely not!".

Thanks for the background on “Now We Are Free,” Rose. I need to listen to that now as a standalone. I love the idea of a “language of the Heart” as a way of communicating with God. Just a beautiful, authentic bit of spirituality. All the more so with her voice.

Story Archer

"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I WILL have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

Above Average Dave
>>161869131

Nothing better than genuine practical action effects. Cool camera techniques are, well, cool, and I still thank CGI for bringing the action of Thor, Iron Man and Captain America to life. But there is something about practical effects that just strikes a chord deep inside. Films that immediately come to mind are DIE HARD, THE RAID REDEMPTION, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and the fort scenes in THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, and the Old Hollywood greats like LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and BEN HUR (toy ships and all) and others. It may just be me (and Mike and Brian (BGB1975)), but the genuine-looking stuff seems less distracting and more visceral and real,

Gray

What an epic film still holds up so well, Can't believe how much of the movie Cassie didn't remember but I guess she has reacted to quite a bit of media in the last 3 years.

Cole Jennett

Everyone was worried about Carly watching this.🤷‍♂️ She came out of it exactly as I expected. Never a doubt in my mind.

Chris Thom
>>161949896

I think when she's stressed out or hyped up her 'it's tender' mode gets deactivated.

Chris Thom

I don't mind the odd rewatch, but here's some words I never expect to hear Carly say: "I'm tired of rom-coms with happy endings. I'm starting my own channel so I can expand my horizons into some heavy stuff that employs proper use of my blanket."

Clarence Newman
>>161896117

Would definitely like a rewatch of one of the Christmas classics every year - even if it's a rewatch for both of them. Not sure about rewatching a tv series, though. Some folks here would lose their minds.

Clarence Newman
>>161871561

Nothing so enjoyable, I'm afraid, Chris. It's done now, though, so I can get back to the good stuff.

Clay F
>>161949585

I generally agree with your sentiment. Should be small doses. This was an exceptional case in that had been almost 4 years since Cassie reacted to Gladiator (on a laptop) (the eleventh movie she reacted to on the channel). Her reaction was fresh in the sense that she didn't remember stuff and seem to pick up more than in her first watch. Cassie/Carly shared their preparation for Gladiator II with us. I am biased in that Gladiator is a favorite movie of mine.

Clay F
>>161919623

This is moot if Carly has already seen Shawshank. Shawshank (my No. 3 favorite movie after GF/GFII) was the first movie she reacted to on the channel 4 years ago (on a laptop). My guess is her rewatch would be fresh. Plus, get to see an interesting Carly first watch reaction if Carly has not seen it.

Clay F
>>161917003

In the outro, Cassie indicated that she didn't think there was no way that Gladiator 2 is as good as Gladiator. After talking about how great Gladiator is, she said: "After just seeing this, I'm like I already know there is no way [with emphasis and shaking her head] that Gladiator 2 could be ... [Carly: I know] there just isn't. It's not their fault, it's just like that [Gladiator] is just an amazing movie."

Rod Reavern

Great reaction video with Carly. I appreciate any opportunity to watch "Gladiator" again! I highly recommend watching "The Nice Guys" (2016), starring Russell Crowe in his best role since "Master and Commander." "The Nice Guys" is the BEST BUDDY COP movie of the past decade (arguably two decades), and Cassie will appreciate that it's written and directed by Shane Black, who wrote "Lethal Weapon 1 & 2", and wrote and directed "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" which she recently watched. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling portray polar opposite Private Investigators in 1970s Los Angeles. The detective duo have amazing chemistry together and are hilarious. The daughter character is also fantastic -- the young actress, Angourie Rice, portrayed Betty Brant in the "Spider-Man: Home trilogy" and Cady in the new "Mean Girls" (2023) movie. "The Nice Guys" wasn't a big hit because it was released a couple weeks after "Captain America - Civil War" so it had no chance. It'll probably never win a poll because not enough people have seen it, so they won't vote for it, but every movie reactor who has watched it loved it. YKunia even called out her own followers for not putting it on a movie poll! Please don't make the same mistake! Just watch it, I guarantee you'll enjoy it -- and it's a movie that Carly will also enjoy!

Clarence Newman
>>161955925

Haven't seen the reaction yet, Cole, so I'm still wondering if the YT edit thumbnail will include Carly's face or her blanket monster alter-ego.

Gábor Árki
>>161949585

Yeah, I hope rewatches remain a rare, once-a-year exceptions. Let's avoid getting caught up in revisiting movies from the PiB catalog with Carly that Cassie has already reacted to on her own, when there are thousands of other great movies that never got a chance.

Clarence Newman
>>161949896

Carly is good tv no matter what she does. My favourite parts of the What Lies Beneath reaction are when Carly, hiding behind her blanket, would flinch as if slapped just because something onscreen made Cassie jump. She wasn't even watching the movie and she still gave us jumpscares. 😆

Rose
>>161864047

So true Dave! Her music is a spiritual journey. I listen to her Dead Can Dance songs like “Rising of the Moon” & “Sanvean (I Am Your Shadow)” on repeat. “Sacrifice” with Pieter Bourke is another favorite .

Laura Thornley

The Roman Empire essentially couldn't stop expanding, as its economy was built on conquest. It was almost a pyramid scheme - conquer a people, take what they want, eventually give them Roman Citizenship and use them to conquer the next people to take from them and so on.

Clarence Newman
>>161890108

Dave! Did you notice that Cassie just waded all the way through this long ream of posts, just to drop a like on yours and yours alone? Normally, that would be cause for celebration, but for some reason she failed to answer your question before leaving! To quote Carly in Croc Dundee, when Sue shows Mick a bit of leg while he's in the bath..."She's a tease!"

Cole Jennett
>>161949585

They have been in small doses. There’s basically been 1 per year on average. It’s still a small dose if it’s 2/year😉

David Freese
>>161949585

Not saying 2 a year isn't small doses but throughout the comment section people have put out lists as long as my arm and that is what my comment was about. >>161890108

I did see the like, Clarence. Gave me a smile, but I figure with three kids, a husband and all of us that the time to comment is probably short for Cassie. But, you and Carly are right: "A tease!"

I thinks number 1 in the top 10 Carly reactions. Because by the entire climax, like you said, she's not even watching. Lol

Those soldiers who were supposed to execute Maximus weren't loyal to him because they were Praetorians, who were the Emperor's personal guard, and not part of the regular army who had served under him. They were only loyal to the Emperor himself whoever that was. They didn't know Maximus and didn't really care about him.

I think one of the causes of people requesting re-watches is a failure of consistent quality movies in the scheduling recently

I don't agree I loved about 85 percent of the choices. I don't just go by classics or high critic scores. Some of likeable films are if they are fun to watch which when people say they don't like Trek or comic or action movies is because alot of people like only films with high critic ratings or Oscar. Alot of those films are so dark boring and aren't worth rewatching

Philip Alan

You can clearly see the difference between her first 20 reactions, to these re-watch reactions. I'm going out on a limb here.. her initial reactions were tame in comparison. And I agree, let's not make rewatches a thing. But I will say this one works because she watched Gladiator so early in her PIB career.

I still gotta find a copy of that, I try to do physical whenever possible.

I am going to have to disagree with you on this one David. For one thing, I don't mind a re-watch with Cass for Carly. They are both pretty forgetful when it comes to the plot and scenes of a movie so it is like a first time watch anyway. As for this taking place of other movies, I can understand and appreciate that perspective but most re-watches have been done with a purpose. In this instance, they want to react to "Gladiator II" (a mistake but their right), so it makes perfect sense for Carly to watch the first one and for Cass to re-watch it.

I said as long as its an event or used sparsly. But I have seen lists in the comments that would take up spaces with Carly all year. Thats what I disagree with. I don't want it to be used to often.

Only thing I disagree with on the early reactions is they were more like a family sitting on a couch or bed and watching the films together. It was something that brought me to her channel about 4 years ago. Sometimes with the slick production imo we lost some of that. I will say she reacts to movies differently because of the 4 years of watching stuff she would never watch b4.

Ok, I see your point now. However, just because people have a list of movies they’d like a rewatch to, doesn’t mean they will happen soon, or ever really. A couple a year, especially if they aren’t already on the channel, ie Forrest Gump or Good Will Hunting, would be good for the channel views. But I believe that popular movies that Carly hasn’t seen should definitely happen

I love the reactions that include Carly. What made “What Lies Beneath” so entertaining was her reactions. I think neither of them were quite prepared to see a scary film. I remember seeing it in the theater and it was really the first time where one of the leads had played that kind of role (read between the lines, I am trying to avoid a spoiler). The audience was a tad bit disconcerted.

Yes! Nearly all empires and countries back then were predatory and their economies were based on conquest, pillage (both the conquered's treasury and goods and enslaving large numbers of the conquered), which was followed by annual taxes or tribute from the conquered countries in gold/goods/slaves for continued "protection." It was basically a bunch of organized crime orgs posing as city-states or nation states.

Not to mention HBO's ROME, which is fairly accurate in its portrayals of Roman life and soldiers at every level.

Great Reaction to a Great Movie. I was surprised how little of the movie Cassie remembered. But Cassie and Carly got the movie. They understood it's greatness.

That's fine. That's your opinion. I do like talking about different opinions and options if its civil. My opinion on rewatches haven't changed much since the LOTR rewatches . Its fun but I think its better to move forward than back. Rewatches can be fun I just don't want then to explode into what Carly watches all the time. Thats all.

You should review the 2005 film Walk the Line starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash. He totally becomes Johnny Cash in this biopic of Cash 's life. Reese Witherspoon is also incredible as his wife June Carter Cash. Astounding! In tone and content it is absolutely a Cassie and Carly Movie. You would love it.

Ben Schwartz

I recently saw Gladiator II -- SUCH a good movie, worthy of the Gladiator 'franchise' name. I highly recommend it.

Johnny Bullis

Great reaction as always... and Im not sure if anyone mentioned it Cassie but the reason those men at the beginning tasked with killing Maximus was because they werent soldiers.. they were the Emperor's guard.. also Oliver Reed who played Proximo actually passed away before filming of this movie ended.. apparently he had a drinking problem and that ultimately caught up to him during filming.. the footage at the end where he gives Maximus the keys was not him.. they used footage from other scenes and also didnt let you see him.. tragic .. but kinda neat how they did that.. movie magic. I cant wait to see your reaction to Gladiator 2.. it definitely is a mixed bag.. but I was entertained with it. .. I hope you are too.

Mister Lou

I AM TRULY ENTERTAINED! idk I may in the minority here, but I really liked Gladiator II Can't wait to check it out with you!

David Bennett

Absolutely LOVED your reaction to one of my personal favorite films! A little piece of trivia for you and Carly: The woman who played Maximus' wife has played a wife to Russel Crowe onscreen twice, AND she is married to Ridley Scott, the director of the movie. I really like how accurate the battle scene in Germania was. The pilus weapon is shown in the hands of the infantry as they close with the 'barbarians' but the film doesn't show any of them being thrown. I have wondered why that is for a long time. May I humbly request that a martial arts film poll be put on the docket? I'd love to see Cassie and Carly react to more of those movies.

samuel Jakob

I dont know why people complain about the rewatch part, I mean I might just have missed some because my only rewatches were LOTR with carly and this one and I loved both, its fun seeing cassie be excited about the movies and also getting a fresh perspective from carly but also from cassie with the knowledge from the first watch. Btw. as you mentioned several times how great Russle Crow was in this, I can exactly remember when but I think it was for some time after the moive released he was treated like royalty by the people of Rome whenever he was there, which just shows how amazing he was.

I hate to be the one to bring an air of reality here, but you must know that Lucius is the emperor He is too young, and the Senet it will appoint a regent and he will probably be killed Before he become Cesar. And the Wonderful senate If power is given back to the republic, Lucius will be the first to die and his mother, because they are the royal line and a threat to the future of the republic………..there it is of course another possibility of Civil War between the most powerful generals, and their Leigons . Until one wins and becomes Caesar Actually, Commodus, the real Commodus was a major lunatic. He fancied himself a gladiator and arranged combats that he knew what he would win Marcus Arelious died of a fever. I still recommend “the Robe “. and its sequel “Demetrius and the gladiators” , which is a better gladiator movie. Gladiator actually lifted some scenes from it . It’s a better gladiator movie, and more true to the actual truth of the lives of Gladiators and there is romance in it for you girls ! You will love it

Uncle Phoenix

Great watch. Another Gladiator recommendation. This one was from 1992. Pre-Jerry Maguire Cuba Gooding Jr and a great cast. Hidden gem.

Lana Gorgeous

If you haven't seen it you must watch Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind and Joaquim Phoenix in Walk the Line, both movies based on true stories and both ridiculously good movies :).

John A

Excellent movie, have not seen it seen it first came out, I remember loving it, but I love it even more this time. It won Best Picture, which was well deserved. Russell Crowe won Best Actor in a Leading Role Joaquin Phoenix should have won that years Best Actor in a Supporting Role
