I'm excited to see this reaction, since we know Cassie likes Tom. 😂

Stranger2Reality

Such an underrated movie. This is probably the best teen movie of the 80s, or at least top 2 along with the Breakfast Club. It's easy to see why Tom Cruise became a star. "Looks like it's the university of Illinois! 😎"

The Tom Cruise List - Born on the Fourth of July - Collateral - Rock of Ages - Tropic Thunder - Magnolia -Legend - Days of Thunder

Joel's Father: Haven't I been telling you. Every once in awhile you just got to say, "what the heck" and take some chances. Joel: You are so right.

Nice list. My top on your list is Collateral (awesome). I also like Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July. Rock of Ages is a guilty pleasure for me b/c I was a young adult in the 80's listening to that music. My bottom on your list is Legend, which I walked out of the theater during that movie. She has reacted to Days of Thunder. She has seen Tropic Thunder.

The last time I mentioned Tropic Thunder she said she had not seen it. I know it is on her Letterboxd but there are a couple of items on there that there seems to be some question of if she has actually seen it or not.

Clay F
>>162925211

Oh yeah, good point. Popcornreqests.com shows Tropic Thunder as “seen” but seems like I do remember that she may have recently clarified that she has not seen it.

Michael G

Scrolled back through the comments on the full vid to see if anyone mentions it, and given the patronage I am shocked no one did. There is a Mission Impossible connection outside of Tom Cruise in this movie. The hotel Joel and Barry go to, to confront Lana when she is with Guido, is The Drake Hotel. The Drake Hotel you might remember from the first Mission Impossible. Jim and the bible from "The Drake Hotel" is how Ethan pieces everything together.

David Nesbit

Now she needs to watch “All the Right Moves” with Carly

My top Cruise movies that Cassie has not seen: 1. "Collateral" (2004) (neo-noir action thriller). Nominated 2 Oscars including Best Supporting Actor (Jamie Foxx). Tom Cruise is awesome. Also stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem. 2. "Magnolia" (1999). Nominated for 3 Oscars including Tom Cruise for Best Actor. Also stars Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John C. Reilly. 3. "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989). Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture and Tom Cruise for Best Actor. Oliver Stone won Oscar for Best Director. Also stars Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, and Kyra Sedgwick (an awesome actress who has been married to Kevin Bacon since 1988). 4. "The Color of Money" (1986) [Martin Scorsese]. Paul Newman won Best Actor Oscar. In Tom Cruise 1986 style, Tom Cruise did great with his character. Also has Forest Whitaker. 5. "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999) [Stanley Kubrick -- his final film]. Tom Cruise. Nicole Kidman. They were married irl at the time of the movie.

Be interesting to see if Cassie would allow herself to laugh and enjoy Tropic Thunder and not worry about PC.

Hope Magnolia comes next. And she actually got suggested that by a major director at a big-budget movie premiere with Tom Cruise. Would think that would be enough.

Chris Thom

The thing that sticks out to me most about this movie might be the Tangerine Dream synths. Besides baby Tom Cruise and Rebecca.

TheSingulatarian
>>162925211

There is one sequence that she may not really enjoy because of her sister's condition. I think that it should be pointed out to her that the film is not making fun of developmentally challenged people. The film got some bad press at the time of its release for those scenes. Undeservedly, I might add. Rather that the butt of the joke is Hollywood exploiting these people's condition for Oscar bait and that all of the characters in the film are terrible insensitive Hollywood types, and they are saying these things because they are awful people. Tropic Thunder is one of the funniest movies of the last twenty-five years and if she goes into it with the right attitude she would enjoy it.

Curious how people feel about Legend these days. Don't remember it having a ton of substance, but the cinematography/sound is some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Might be cool to see Ridley Scott return to that genre before he passes. (Holy crap just read he's 87.)

Tangerine Dream were electronica pioneers and released over 100 albums, and yet this might be what they're best known for. :-) (And let's not forget long-time member Christopher Franke's work on Babylon 5.)

Chris Thom

I know when I first saw this I was expecting way more classic rock. But the synths really take over for most of it.

Mark White

Another great reaction Cassie, yet again elevating a ok movie and making it better to watch. You really should give the “ The outsiders” a go next. Patrick Swayze and Tom cruise! Among many others.

Clay F
>>162958258

I read The Outsiders book (by S.E. Hinton) as a kid and remember liking it. I watched the movie 40 yeas ago in the 80's but don't really remember it.

TheSingulatarian
>>162935497

I do wonder what Cassie will think of Tom Cruise screaming out his rather vulgar catch phrase as Frank "TJ" Mackie in Magnolia.

Clarence Newman

Just watched this. My goodness, Tom Cruise looks small in this movie. Small, clean cut, harmless. It's amazing how he grew into the gung ho movie star he became. Rebecca de Mornay, on the other hand. I'm sure she's very nice in real life, but there's something very "Hand That Rocks The Cradle" about every character she plays - like she would be the best time you ever had in your life, until that one day you woke up with the garden shears around your junk. ("Do I have your attention, sweetheart?")

"A pretty face can hide an evil mind"...Secret Agent Man.

I really love that movie - Tom Cruise nails it and drinks it... Great cast as well... I always wanted to go way down to Kokomo....

Tim C

Use to have this movie and many more films on RCA Disc. Was like a vlyn Record but in a plastic sleeve.Played on Player that loaded and removed the sleeve. My Brother still has a couple with tons of movies from the 80s. Makes me think of other 80s movie like Fast time at Ridgemount High and Porkies but definitely adult not PG.But were Classics 80 s films you watched as a teenager.

Back in high school in the eighties, the book was required reading. We were lucky our English teacher was a fan and showed us the movie, as he didn’t have too, it really cemented just what a good little story it is. Great cast for the movie too.

I though COLLATERAL was one of Tom Cruise's best performances of his later career. He was chilling in this role and going hard against type. Jamie Foxx was brilliant, as usual. And Mark Ruffalo killed it as the detective. As an aside, I also thought the hair should've got billing as a co-star. Genius move by Michael Mann to kind of "de-movie star" his lead actor without resorting to scars or ugliness.

Clay F
>>162935497

Collateral is great. I like the intensity. I like the soundtrack. As an aside, in particular, like the song "Shadow on the Sun" by Audioslave -- integrated well into the movie and one of my favorite Audioslave songs. Mann is apparently a fan of Audioslave. As you may know, Audioslave is Rage Against the Machine w/Chris Cornell as the lead singer. Mann incorporated 2 Audioslave songs in MIami Vice (2006). R.I.P. Chris Cornell.

I recently rewatched Born on the Fourth of July, and while Tom Cruise is great in it, the movie is merely OK, trending towards good. I was kind of expecting it to be more impactful I guess. Some of Oliver Stone's films from that era which were impactful back then, come across as a little pedestrian nowadays. I dunno. It's still worth seeing though, especially if someone is a Tom Cruise fan, as that's among his greatest performances. Collateral, Eyes Wide Shut and The Color of Money are amazing films though, and Cruise is great in all of them (although Paul Newman overshadows him in The Color of Money, but that's not a knock as Newman is incredible in that movie). But as V M said, Cassie definitely needs to watch The Hustler before The Color of Money, as The Color of Money is the sequel to The Hustler, even though you can still appreciate The Color of Money without ever seeing The Hustler. Side question: is The Color of Money the very first lega-sequel movie ever made?

Clay F
>>162935497

I agree with everything you say. I don't know the answer to your question. The Born on the Fourth of July is an important movie but is somewhat pedestrian (as you say) and especially sad (for me in my old age). Yet, worthwhile to watch at least once. Tom Cruise acting is good. Plus, a signficant message. It's been years since I've seen it. Collateral is probably my favorite on my suggested list.

Thank you Cassie for providing us with this amazing channel!! Making watching these movies such a more enjoyable experience!!

My LD player still worked until around 2018. If any technology would become obsolete quickly, you could always count on me to buy it, LOL.

Capacitance Electronic Disc aka CED, aka "Selectavision". Not many people had them! But the people who did have them, tended to have large movie collections. The vinyl discs were less expensive than tapes or laserdiscs. They're collector's items today, for sure!

Chris Thom
>>162936810

Yeah true. I didn't discover that one until about 5 years ago. Kind of the ultimate Stephen King story. Drew was adorable as always. Apparently the new girl that played her won a Razzie for her performance and there was a ton of backlash for them doing that to a child. Drew stuck up for her as well.

Chris Thom
>>162935497

The Color of Money was a Scorsese wasn't it? Pretty sure it was. Or one of his movies was definitely about pool...But apparently Siskel and Ebert really hammered Scorsese over that movie in a big way to the point it made him quit drugs and make a lot of changes in his life. Not sure exactly what the problem was with it.

Chris Thom
>>162931927

Some of my first memories of life are that Kokomo song. That must've been pretty big for a while.

Ria Grix

I’ve not seen this since it was first on tv back in the mid eighties.

Chris Thom
>>163385614

Been a while for me too. Almost never see it on cable anymore. Or even the HBO channel.

Jimmy Stewart

Has Cassie seen Edge of Tomorrow with Cruise and Emily Blunt...anyone

Clay F
>>163493376

Yes, she has seen it. You can check the status (seen or unseen) of a movie at popcornrequests.com. You can also check her Letterboxd.
