Hey everyone! Today, we’re doing something fun and celebrating movies that turn 25 this year! Holy crap the year 2000 was a quarter of a century ago?? Not ok.

A lot of these movies have been on my short list and what a great year for the movies, everything from blockbusters to cult classics!

There will be two polls!
The top two winners from each poll will face off in a final showdown!

Who will wear the 2000 CROWN?

Comments

Brian Wood

Space Cowboys is the only one I recognize lol

Aaron Summers

How I wish I could vote for Wonder Boys 10 times.

Scott Macaulay

I feel like Cassie will like Best in Show

Dallin

High Fidelity please 🙏🏼

Matt Rose

Some really good ones in there and quite a few I've never seen. BEST IN SHOW, HIGH FIDELITY, and BILLY ELLIOT are the ones that really stand out as being excellent.

Shad Kanyak

I chose High Fidelity because it’s a classic, but I really need to watch Wonder Boys again. Been a really long time.

Sam Fuller

If you watch Best in Show you definitely need to watch This is Spinal Tap!

TheSingulatarian

2000 wasn't 25 years ago...........ohhhhhhhhhhh.

Just Plain Bob

Rooting for “Space Cowboys.” If she watches it, I’m betting it will be Cassie’s favorite Clint Eastwood film. Fun movie. (Cassie, it also has Tommy Lee Jones and James Garner - the scrounger in “The Great Escape”).

Sean Barbante

We need a run on the Christopher Guest mockumenteries, and Best in Show is a good start.

V M
>>163717971

I've not heard of many of these. It was Space Cowboys or High Fidelity for me. I chose the latter.

GomezAddams

I'm really glad you sometimes go past the poll winners and explore other great films. There are a lot of gems here. Thanks for all you do and always take care of yourself and fam first, these movies and your fans will always be here. 🎬💁‍♀️🍿👏🏆⭐️💛

Aaron Summers
>>163717971

It’s more your taste than some others. For myself, I snuck into it as a kid after seeing another movie; I walked out kinda glad I didn’t pay to watch it.

Brian Wood
>>163717971

I feel I heard of High Fidelity. But Cowboys is the only one I've seen. So I went with that one, because I love Eastwood, Jones, and Garner movies as well. Lol

Rose

Billy Elliot is such a joy and there are tears & laughter. Love Jamie Bell’s performance and he is exceptional in this role. I’m really excited about his upcoming Fred & Ginger biopic (with Margaret Qualley). Pls Billy come thru!

Anjolie Lanel

Space Cowboys is a movie I really enjoy and i think Cassie will really like as well

Hannah

love ben stiller, edward norton and jenna elfman keeping the faith ❤️

Dan M

This is such a fun idea, and the choices are great, but I have to go with Space Cowboys. I would have voted for this movie in the Clint Eastwood poll, but sadly it wasn’t there. But this is a movie I think you, and Carly if she joins you, would absolutely love. It’s got a little bit of everything…action, comedy, romance, drama, and 4 excellent, well respected, and still sexy actors in the lead rolls.

Clay F

What a great poll. Essentially every choice is good. My top selection is High Fidelity.

Phil Sexton

She'll love High Fidelity.

Stranger2Reality
>>163717993

Wonder Boys is such a fantastic movie. I immediately voted for it and was crushed to se it had barely any votes and that instead Space Cowboys is running away with it.

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

Just voted for High Fidelity (2000)! Back when I was at university doing a Media Production degree, there was one special day when we had a screening of High Fidelity (2000) and got to do a special Q&A with its director Stephen Frears. A very nice, friendly guy who answered numerous questions that we had, including the question "Do you regret turning down any movies to direct?" To which he replied "I turned down Thelma & Louise (1991)!" We all gasped and exclaimed "Oh NO!!" and Stephen Frears replied "Yep, that's pretty much what my reaction was!"

Mark White

Lots of good movies. But you know Cassie will enjoy “Space Cowboys”

Mike Adams

I haven't heard about Happy Accidents in so long. I really liked that one

Neil Varma

25 yrs ago… I’m old

David Bennett

Cassie I would like to humbly recommend that you put another Christopher Guest Mockumentary on your to-potentially-watch list: A Might Wind is my personal favorite of Guests because it has a ton of original music and the film is quite hilarious.

Rose
>>163718645

I recommended it on earlier post as well - and your mom has great taste

Lord Nelson

Wonder Boys is a good and forgotten film. Also has a good Dylan original on the soundtrack.

Matt Rose
>>163718645

I finally saw that last year after my wife kept pushing it. It's fantastic.

Chris Brown

Billy Elliot is in a poll! I know far too few people have seen it to win any poll. Therefore I'll just encourage everyone to watch it.

Silver Machine

Oh man. This poll is stacked with great flicks: Best In Show, High Fidelity, Wonder Boys… I wish some of those were in the other poll which has less appealing options in my humble opinion. But I’m not surprised to see Space Cowboys in the lead. Cassie would definitely enjoy that one. However, one brilliant comedy from 2000 is missing from both polls: Bowfinger (with Steve Martin & Eddie Murphy)

Rose
>>163718645

I’m glad she pushed you. Wife knows best 😉 You’re right - it’s fantastic.

Story Archer

Ooof... not a good year for movies, was it? Or have we just seen all the best ones already?

TheSingulatarian

State and Main is pretty good and largely forgotten. If I remember right it was actually filmed in Rhode Island even though it takes place in Northern New England. I guess the stars didn't want to be that far from New York City. David Mamet is a solid screen writer and playwright and anything with Philip Seymour Hoffman is worth a watch. Cassie would like Mamet's "About Last Night" based on his play "Sexual Perversity in Chicago". I was very disappointed that there was no perverse sex at all.

Dan M
>>163718217

And a suave Donald Sutherland from The Hunger Games (Emperor Snow).

Stephen Last

I learn something new everyday. I was looking up Best in Show and while I knew Christopher Guest, I didn't know he was married to Jamie Lee Curtis. Also best in show had a 93% on rotten tomatoes.

Larry Darrell

Space Cowboys and Frequency for the win!!! Those two would be Tops for the year, and it’s only just begun.

Clarence Newman

Hey, my fave is winning the poll by a street! I must have been standing next to Mike Lemon when he got hit by the fairy dust on the Classic Romance poll!

scott osborne

come on space cowboys stars Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner

mikethemotormouth

Keeping the Faith is one of the few rom-coms I can stomach

Mike Lemon
>>163722060

It apparently passes pretty quick. Both my choices are far behind in their respective polls.

Michael Siegel

Wait, these movies are 25 years old? Noooooo.

Mike Lemon
>>163720340

Bagger Vance and Men of Honor are great, Best in Show was pretty good, I remember liking Finding Forester but I don't remember much about it.

Mike Lemon
>>163718169

Star Wars (1977) was closer to 2000 than today is closer to 2000. You're welcome.

Ria Grix

Billy Elliott is beautiful, uplifting with an incredible soundtrack… and it’s being beaten by Space Cowboys‽ High Fidelity I get but Space Cowboys?? C’mon really?

Omar
>>163723166

As much as I love Space Camp, which was such a favorite of mine that I wore out the VHS when I was a kid, it is extremely niche and I don’t know if it’s money for a channel like this. But if it gets watched, I’m all for it and I will technically advise the crap out of it.

Omar

Space Cowboys is winning?? Yeehaw! Getting ready to point out all the nerdy space facts

Katie Jackson

I was hoping Where The Heart Is would make one of the polls. Oh well, nothing jumping out that I'm really excited about. I guess I'll just wait for Planet Of The Apes

Mike Lemon
>>163723166

Make it a triple feature with Space Cop (2016) and I'm in. Just watched the SpaceCamp trailer, it looks like that good kind of terrible. Downloading it now.

Jay

How many times can I vote for Best in Show. Once is not enough

Jay

You would LOVE Legend of Bagger Vance!

Mike LL

I really don't have a dog in this race, on either poll. I'll be happy to watch Space Cowboys. I like my films a *little* bit older than a mere 25 years. 😂😂😂

D. T. Nelson

How is The Legend of Bagger Vance not in the top 2 of this poll?

Bryan Erickson

Who are the morons not voting Best In Show. JC people.

René Ferland
>>163723769

i can't agree more about Billy Elliot. I have seen Space Cowboys and it does not stick to me as particularly memorable. Beside Billy Elliot, I also voted for Nurse Betty, a movie I went to see in the blind: a nice surpise with a quite original plot.

Omar
>>163723166

Always wondered if it would have been received any better if they had waited a couple of years due to Challenger.

clutchkman

Best in show is a darn good comedy.

Milton William Burray

My favourite movie from 2000 was Me, Myself & Irene. Honourable mention for Animal Factory

Carol Rocha

Not heard of a lot of these. Hmm. Space Cowboys will do. Best in Show will do. None of them scream out to me.

Clarence Newman
>>163727213

I think she's watched most of the Carreys, Milt. Shame, because Rene Zellweger is a delight in that one.

John

The only ones I care about is High Fidelity and Space Cowboys

John

I thought Bagger Vance was at least half an hour too long and boring, but I ve only seen it once way back when.

Gray

Space Cowboys & Billy Elliot for me, not enough British movies on the channel. I mean Sexy Beast missed out of this poll, although might not have been your thing to be fair. Stil a great film though.

Kuskesh Haramzadeh

I keep thinking Billy Elliot was that Adam Sandler movie with Chris Farley! But it's not is it? What movie am I thinking of?

Paul Stelter

Patreon is being obnoxious, but I hope my vote for Best in Show registered. (If all the dog lovers voted for it, it would win easily)

DSM The Editor

You love Clint movies, you love tender movies, youre gonna love Space Cowboys!

Tara

Haha!! Cassie, I bet you will never think of the term face off the same way again! “The top two winners from each poll will face off in a final showdown!”

Mike Lemon
>>163726732

Pro tip- Don't call the ones you want to vote your way "morons". Even if you are joking, it doesn't come through in text.

Steve kephart

Keeping the Faith would be perfect for you and your sister. A romantic comedy you haven't seen? But unfortunately it won't win.

Just Plain Bob
>>163728977

Saw “Sexy Beast” in the theater when it first came out. Such a great movie. And proof that it’s still possible to make a good film that’s completely different than anything else on offer.

rakesh

High Fidelity! Why the hell is space cowboys in the lead!?!?!?!?!?!

bknsty14
>>163731976

I knew this would happen before I even saw the results. If I could vote for High Fidelity 1000 times, I would. I’m making burner accounts and cheating.

Chris Thom

Do hope she watches Wonder Boys at some point. It's a bit of a (slightly indie) classic. The rest of the poll I'm having a hard time deciding.

Gray
>>163728977

Yeah and that Ben Kingsley performance was brilliant.

Chris Thom
>>163724852

If you mean the 2000 Tim Burton PotA almost everyone here is trying to get her to skip it.

Chris Thom
>>163731976

I know High Fidelity was pretty good. But I've just seen it so many times at this point I don't know if I really want to revisit again. Anyways...voted for it again. lol

Ike

Answer is E: Space Cowboys.

Clarence Newman
>>163727213

Milton. If it's not I must have missed it. It would definitely be on my list if I hadn't seen it on there. I'm hoping you're right.

TheSingulatarian
>>163720340

I don't know. It was a year after my divorce. I was trying to get a struggling business off the ground. I pretty much walked around in a daze for two or three years terrified I was going to end up homeless.

bgb1975 (Brian)

Good to see another Clint Eastwood movie in the lead, but "A Perfect World" still needs to be seen by Cassie and Carly.

Jack Dalton

Poor Billy Elliot. Such a unique movie! One of the best movies ever made! Feel good of the highest order, with so many wonderful messages. The "dad crossing the picket line" scene is still one of the most beautiful visions of a father's unconditional love. "We're done! He's just a wee boy! We have to give him a chance!" Give Billy Elliot a chance and you will absolutely understand!

jdj830

I voted for High Fidelity, which is essential viewing. Best in Show is even better, but before seeing that you should really watch This is Spinal Tap, the film that invented the mockumentary improv comedy that’s now becoming the standard format for sitcoms but was startlingly original back in the day. It’s a great film in its own right but also features many of the same actors in Best in Show, and they made a couple of other films as well.

Just Plain Bob
>>163737483

The Stonehenge bit in “This Is Spinal Tap” made me laugh so hard and so long that it induced an asthma attack (something I’ve had happen a handful of times when watching comedies). The blu ray includes all the deleted scenes, in order, so that it plays like an alternate version of the film.

Dan M
>>163726120

Is there a movie called Dracula in Space? Space Vampires?

Dan M
>>163720340

Have you seen Space Cowboys, Frequency, or Billy Elliot? They’re excellent movies.

Drew Morelock

I hope "Red Violin" makes it on a poll soon! I feel like that is such an underrated film.

Chris Thom
>>163736945

Vaguely remember that one. But a picket line? Who was protesting a child? Wasn't it about a school play?

Henry Graham

State and Main is terrific, probably Mamet's most crowdpleasing film as a director. “Go you Huskies!” They'd never win but it's fun to see Mamet and Neil Labute on the same poll. It was around the time of Nurse Betty that I recall thinking Labute was shaping up to be Mamet's heir and a really exciting filmmaker to follow. A few movies later he directed a remake of The Wicker Man and his subsequent film career makes for pretty dismal viewing.

Chris Thom
>>163729142

Pretty sure Happy Gilmore 2 just happened. Side note. Also Chris Farley was lined up to play Shrek before he died. Bonus fun fact.

Lyle Morgan

It’s not that Space Cowboys is bad…it’s just completely forgettable and cliched while High Fidelity is hilarious and sad and unique and perfectly cast and well-written. No human on the planet has ever quoted it or asked “hey, have you seen Space Cowboys?!”

Chris Thom
>>163726732

I do think she would enjoy those. She seems primed for subtle humor/satire/weirdness now. Not nice to call people morons though. There's a shit ton of movies in the world, no one has time to get to them all. Or most even. People usually go with what they already know and like to a degree.

Henry Graham

Just to add a little flavour to these extremely anglophone lists, my write-in vote would be for Lukas Moodysson's hilarious and heartwarming Together.

Larry Darrell
>>163741089

I got two debunks for ya. Ready? Here we go… “on a count of one.” Many times I have asked, “have you seen Space Cowboys?” If someone likes Clint Eastwood or James Garner, etc, films… If someone likes Space/NASA films, such as The Right Stuff, Deep Impact or Armageddon. (I’m almost positive you will find people recommending Space Cowboys in the comments of those first two) I’ve even had people ask me if I’ve seen Space Cowboys.

JohnnyUtah

I consider myself somehwhat of a moviephile, at least from 1977-current. I've only heard of the legend of bagger Vance, I turn in my card...

Björn Karlsson
>>163741789

Yeah Together is great. Michael Nyqvist is phenomenal in that movie. Maybe his best performance in his career. I guess you know that L. Moodysson did a sequel to Together in 2023 - Together 99. Anyhow.... All of L. Moodysson's movies are on popcorn request and they deserves requests. 🥰🥰

Jacob King

High Fidelity is the male equivalent of a chick flick. 10/10

Clay F
>>163740118

She reacted to The Red Violin (1998). Patreon exclusive posted June 26, 2021. I thought it great that she reacted to The Red Violin.

Drew Morelock
>>163740118

Thank you for that. I am new to Patreon and was not aware. Are we able to see older posts on here?

Story Archer
>>163720340

Sure, at least a few solid films come out every year, and we all have our favorites... but that's hardly an all-star line-up up there.

Clay F

I couldn't finish Space Cowboys because seemed corny with the crusty old guys. Space Cowboy = stellar cast but damn they’re old, and a ludicrous/implausible premise. I am hoping the acting and special effects can save the movie for me on this watch. I am happy for the many patrons who have been previously asking for Space Cowboys. I voted High Fidelity. IMDb 6.5, Metacritic 73%, RT 78% (audience 53%) = Space Cowboys (2000) IMDb 7.4, Metacritic 79%, RT 91% (audience 90%) = High Fidelity (2000)

Clay F
>>163741089

I think "cliche" is a good word for Space Cowboys, but looks like I will giving Space Cowboys a second chance when I watch along with her reaction.

Clay F
>>163740118

Yes, you can see. Do a search. Type in “red violin” in the search box (field). I don’t see the search field in the app, but the search field is at the upper right if you are web-based on a PC or laptop.

Mark T
>>163741089

And I've never quoted or asked anyone, "Have you seen High Fidelity" nor have I ever had anyone in my entire life ask me, "Have you seen High Fidelity". So there's that. LOL

Rose
>>163736945

@Chris - you’re due for a Billy Elliot re-watch. The father’s arc is emotionally moving.

Rose
>>163724852

Katie - give “Billy Elliot” a try! This was Jamie Bell’s debut film and he won several awards for his performance. His other notable films include “Jane Eyre” / “King Kong” / “Snowpiercer” / “Rocketman.” I love him best as Billy, tho.

Rose
>>163723769

I feel like Billy has become widely forgotten - very unfortunate. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and never fails to make me cry.

René Ferland
>>163750506

I agree with your comments on the movie. :-) And like you, I'm happy for those who voted for it. I looked more closely at what Cassie had reacted to so far, and I realized I had my fair share of movies I personally enjoyed, so I'm much more indulgent with the polls now.

Jaret Morlan

Shocked by the leader of this poll!

Joe
>>163750506

Old guys can go into space, look at Shatner, LOL.

V M
>>163717971

Brian, I wish your pick a flick choice had won.

James Melton
>>163741089

Lyle meant to say "No one *should have asked..." which I kind of agree with. Not that it's bad. It's just completely overshadowed by High Fidelity, Billy Elliot, Wonder Boys, State and Main, and possibly also by others on this list that I don't know.

Brian Wood
>>163717971

Me too. But we'll just keep on trying I guess. I'm not entering no other choice but that one. I know Cassie and Carley would not know what hit them.

James Melton
>>163723769

The poll results are a bit disheartening. It's like she will have to slog through every mediocre mainstream movie before she can get to the really good films this way.

Ryan Towell

Keeping the Faith is by far my favorite of these listed. Directed by Edward Norton and Edward in a Rom/Com, Ben Stiller, and Jenna Elfman is such a treat in this. It's a fun, feelgood rom/com.

Mike Amandes

I think Cassie would enjoy Keeping the Faith the most out of this list, but I can see that it's not going to win. Happy about Space Cowboys being in the lead, because I just know Cassie (and Carly) would love it. High Fidelity and Best in Show are two of my faves, but I always think about what Cassie's going to enjoy in these polls.

Kevin Charley

2000 was a way better year for movies than these.

Jens Kristensen

"High Fidelity" is kinda a personal favorite. Its funny, sad and makes you think or rethink your life... but still in a entertaining way. Lisa Bonet is way cool and cute... the movie also features danish actress Iben Hjejle in the first or even maybe the only american movie she made...

V M
>>163717971

Yes, theyve never seen a movie like that before. Entertainment Weekly ran an online contest 7 years ago to determine who the best "Best Actress" winner of all-time is. After weeks of narrowing down the bracket, the voters had to choose between two finalists: Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice, or Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind. Vivien won 55% to 45%. I love that movie. The story, the cinematography, the dialogue, the complex characters, but what I love the most about it is Vivien's amazing oscar winning performance. Best you'll ever see. She carries the 4 hour movie on her shoulders.

Just Plain Bob
>>163750506

John Glenn returned to space when he was 77. Ed Dwight flew in space at 90. So, at least where age is concerned, it’s not that implausible. Particularly if you actually watch the entire movie and see how the mission is to be accomplished.

Kevin C

I know it's not going to win, but they would both love Wonder Boys. It's such a Bob Dylan of films.

Joe
>>163741089

Different movies have different audiences. If you like High Fidelity fine, why the need to piss on Space Cowboys.

Lyle Morgan
>>163741089

Boy, I really touched a nerve here. Had no idea everyone loved yet another “let’s get the team back together for ONE MORE JOB” movie so much. Again, it’s not bad. It’s just been done to death and is completely predictable and paint-by-numbers. There are definitely worse movies out there and I generally like Clint as a director. I’m sticking with “cliched” though.

JAKH

"Space Cowboys" is the only good one on this list IMNSHO.

Kristen

I voted for Keeping the Faith and Wonder Boys. They are both old favorites of mine. I think you and Carly would love Keeping the Faith as it’s a romantic comedy that not many have seen and it’s directed by Edward Norton. It’s very tender! And Wonder Boys is just a great movie, perfect for a winters day!

Jennifer Medicus

I picked Best in Show thinking I'd be waaay outnumbered. Who knew? But Space Cowboys??

Ian Tonge

I haven't actually seen Wonder Boys, but the book it's based on was written by my favourite author: Michael Chabon. Not sure if we do book recommendations around these parts, but if you've never read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay or The Yiddish Policemen's Union do yourself a favour and check them out.

Stick Figure Studios

I have kind of reached a point in these polls now where I no longer really want one particular film to win since one vote hardly makes much of a difference in the big scheme of things, so instead I look at whatever two are ahead and pick the one that I prefer more. In this case, I'm fine with SPACE COWBOYS winning. I Even recommended it back when she was watching MILLION DOLLAR BABY and OUTLAW JOSIE WALES.

Clay F
>>163816875

Best in Show is decent at 3rd place. I voted for it. I also voted for High Fidelity.

Mannygogou

I went ahead and voted for Best in Show and High Fidelity... as two good movies that I haven't seen lol. And also voted on many others after looking them up, again lol 😊

Chris Thom
>>163770930

Oh that's right. Forgot that was his first big breakout. Pretty sure he had some bit parts in some 80's or early 90's movies but I don't think he even spoke in them.

Chris Thom
>>163866082

Both are pretty quirky but very fun. Would suggest both. Best in Show you may have to adjust your sense of humor a bit, I don't know...but it's pretty weird, subtle humor for a lot of it. And plenty of wtf. Cast looks like they're having a lot of fun with it.

Tom
>>163737483

My thoughts exactly! When that tiny Stonehenge came down I laughed/cried so hard. Hilarious! That and of course perhaps the most famous scene of all, "But this goes to eleven." Did you know that it's the only film IMDB , allows for the rating go to eleven?

Tom
>>163762923

I agree with Diego kontarovdky. Best In Show is the BEST film on this list by a mile. Not even close. Space Cowboys? Flimsy plot to put together once great actors but way past their prime. This was a gimmick or click bait movie not worth a second watch.

Tom

My guess is most of the folks voting likely have not seen State and Main, High Fidelity, Wonder Boys or Keeping the Faith all of which are infinitely superior to Space Cowboys in every single way. Oh, well. No big deal. As the Romans would say, "De gustibus non est disputandum".

Tom
>>163726732

Unfortunately, Bryan, my guess is most of the folks voting have never seen Best in Show so they are unable to vote on what is clearly the best film on this list.

Jens Kristensen
>>163770930

I remember him playing Matthew Brodericks friend in "The Cable Guy" but he didn't have a lot of screen time... - but of course never forget him in the classic "The NeverEnding Story III" ... (okay, that's a pretty bad movie - even Falkor is looking bad and not up to standard)...

Clarence Newman
>>163879080

That sums me up, Tom, but I think that applies to most polls. None of us is old enough to have watched all the great movies, or even most, so when it comes to Cassie, it's our faves we tend to vote for. Always interesting to watch a new one, though. I've discovered some real gems on here that I'd never even heard of before.

Chris Thom
>>163743452

It's really hard to keep track of all the movies that get released. There's A LOT of just the bigger budget ones. Feel the same I look at some of these lists and it's like nope nope nope didn't see that never heard of that. lol

Chris Thom
>>163741089

Different audiences for sure. Never ever heard anyone my age or younger say Oh you have to see Space Cowboys! But Clint Eastwood in general was a bit out of style for younger people back then. But still fun to go back and watch as we get older. Sometimes he really wants to cram a point of view and a certain politics down our throat, but still it means something to him so that can be infectious.

Tom
>>163879080

Thanks, Clarence for your considerate reply. I'm actually 66 and have been a cinephile since I was a teenager. That and heavy doses of Led Zeppelin, The Who and pretty much any and all music coming out of the 70's and 80's. I actually have seen every film on both these polls, some more often than others on the list. My ex-wife was/is a professional film critic and I learned a lot from her over the years. I am subscribed to about 10 movie reactors because I love watching a movie I enjoyed through the eyes of some one watching it for the first time and I venture to guess that is why most of us are here. Anyway, to end this rambling reply, I will say of the reactors I've watched these past years and many more to whom I am not subscribed Cassie is absolutely, hands down the best there is. Her reactions are so genuine, heart felt and sincere it really is a treat to watch her react to some awesome and some not so awesome movies. Anyway, it's all good. Take care

Joe M

Cassie and Carly would have enjoyed Billy Elliot. Hope they get to see it at some point.

So curious if a professional movie critic can truly be objective about movies, or if they have the same, semi-unshakable preferences in style, genre, and time period that most people have.

5th place. Not a bad finish in the poll. Gets good reviews. I voted for it.

It stands to reason a critic might have difficulty in maintaining objectivity while combatting their personal preferences. As it turns out based from my experience with my ex and other critic friends of her whom I came to know, the two are not mutually exclusive. They can both enjoy the movie with their personal preferences and quirky taste and at the same time adopt a professional analysis devoid of any personal prejudices. One way to look at it is in their disecting of the film, and there are far more angles to analyze than I ever imagined, i e. Lighting, camera angles, what type of shot is employed, the editing style, the mis en scene which refers to every thing in the background, books, plants, windows, knickknacks, etc. EVERY THING is a CHOICE by the Director as are the choices the actors make in how to portray their character, what type of outfit, etc. My point is in knowing, recognizing and picking out the choices the director made in every aspect of the film makes the critic enjoy the movie more than the average movie goer because they pick up and understand all of the intricate steps needed to bring the film to life. Contrary to what Wordsworth said, "We murder to disect" these professionals pick up subtle aspects of a movie that we would never pick up and, in so doing it actually enhances their enjoyment. So, to finish this long winded response to your legitimate question they can both enjoy the film on the surface level which is where most of us reside and that's totally cool and then can pick up the subtle and often genius choices that a Director makes. Through my years with my wife I picked up a ton of things to look for in a movie that I never would have thought to look for and it makes me appreciate all the more the interesting choices that go into making a piece of art. I hope this long rambling helps answer your question a bit. If not, that's probably in me. Take care.
