Just a matter of time before Gone With the Wind 😜

That is at the top on the PiB romance watchlist FS

Rose

Mickey Rooney in “The Black Stallion” - highly recommend! Kelly Reno doesn’t get enough credit - his performance is so compelling. Zooey & Emily Deschanel’s father, Caleb, was the cinematographer that made this movie magical. This film could never be made today.

There is a documentary about the making of GWTW which I think she should maybe even watch before the movie - just to get a sense of how big a deal this film was.

Stan the Man

How? How could they think that racist performance by Mickey Rooney is ok? Makes me sick

Chris Thom

So curious if the jewelry seen in the movie is real and expensive...or not.

John

Hope she lines up How to Steal a Million too. Audrey and Peter O toole are great together.

Just watching this premiere tonight and seeing the party scene I think they were going for a zany comedy kind of thing. Kind of like modern movies. But I don't know. It's pretty bad.

2-Can

Doc is played by Buddy Ebsen - most famous for The Beverly Hillbillies. He was also originally cast to play the Tin Woodsman in the Wizard of Oz but he had a bad reaction to the silver make-up and had to drop out.

As a writer and former film studies guy…man, this movie is a love-hate relationship. There are so many meta things to analyze. One can not like either the ridiculously racist and out of place Mickey Rooney role, nor the elimination of the, at least, ambigiousness (if not outright homosexual) natural of most of the men in this movie, including the converted romantic lead. But the things that I love to think about are these what ifs: 1. What if the ending had stayed the same from the Novella…mainly, no happy ending. In her fit at the end, she leaves Cat in the rain, and leaves New York. The ending is the narrator (who became Paul in the movie) getting a note from her after she gets to Brazil, and he hopes she has found a place that feels like home. The not-necessarily-happy ending would’ve been so revolutionary in the 1960’s, and thought-provoking. But turning the Narrator into a romantic lead (which he isn’t in the book) was half of the huge change that changed every bit of meaning from the novel…in some ways, the novella was one of the first woman-and-gay-man-best-friend trope that became so common in the late 20th century. 2. What if Capote’s wish had happened, and Marilyn Monroe played Holly? Capote wrote the role thinking of Marilyn…and god, the role would’ve been so different just being her, and yet, just as significant and amazing. Of course, the Meta of Marilyn’s real life inability to find a home and passing lovers/husbands would’ve also added to a Marilyn-Tiffany’s version’s analysis. But Marilyn and Audrey are such opposites in how they are both so iconic…I hate to lose the version that Audrey brought as well. In the end…this movie makes me be pensive and sad. I don’t see either version have a happy ending. In the movie, we just see a happy moment as the last moment we see, and because of that, we imagine they stayed happy…but they probably didn’t. Paul’s desire to protect Holly is a version of care that is not love, but it’s one so many men fall for…and that those men need to learn is not good. It’s idealized toxicity…and we are endlessly drawn to it anyways. I love this movie for both what it is, and what it never was. I hate this movie for what it never was, and what it contained. But it is not a movie I can ever forget.

I hit return when I meant to hit shift-return…it’s all edited now with my what ifs…. Sorry!

Chris Thom
>>164421461

Marilyn would've been really good I bet. She definitely had the talent. And if she had lived longer she probably could have/would have taken on all kinds of different roles. But Audrey nailed it.

I wish you had been here to back me up just a month ago, when this community normalized the so-called comedy Goldmember.

Happy Hanukkah

I think I remember that film, and as I recall, I think I kinda liked it. So that's one thing I've got.

Starpartyguy

My favorite Audrey Hepburn movie is How to steal a million.

TheSingulatarian
>>164417816

Blake Edwards kind of had a thing for the racist Asian portrayal. He got a few of those out of Peter Sellers as well.

Chris Thom
>>164417816

Which part of Goldmember? Haven't seen that in a while. Last I saw was the PIB vid.

Clay F
>>164421461

Would have been wild with Marilyn. I would watch that version.

Clay F
>>164421363

Don't forget "Barnaby Jones' (1973) (8 seasons) [that I watched as a kid when it aired.] Of course, I definitely watched The Beverly Hillbillies (1962) (9 seasons), which I watched early seasons' episodes as re-runs.

Clarence Newman
>>164421461

The homosexual storyline was routinely erased in movie adaptations back then. Another example is "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" (1958), starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. It's a really good movie on its own, but in the play, the homosexual undertones were a big part of the tension. As for Marilyn playing Holly, that would've been great when she was in her prime. By 1961, I think she might've been fading a bit too much to pull it off.

Clay F
>>164411037

Gone With the Wind (1939): "Includes themes and character depictions which may be offensive and problematic to contemporary audiences." On my watchlist for my education of the movie.

Clarence Newman

There are a few head-scratching elements to Mickey Rooney's career, this character being one of them. His greatest accomplishment, however, was getting Ava Gardner to marry him.

Clarence Newman
>>164411037

Not sure we can call Gone With The Wind racist, Stranger. It's a movie about a certain time so you can't eliminate everything, particularly as the civil war was specifically fought over racism. I watched it for probably the second time a couple of years ago and I just fell in love with Mammy. She's the sweetest person ever and her relationship with the family (in particular the kids) is totally believable. If I was to categorize Gone With the Wind, I would say it was "a film that deals with racism", but I wouldn't call it "a racist film" because I don't think it was done with racist intentions. Birth of a Nation (1915), on the other hand....THAT is a racist film with racist intentions.

Jackie McDonalds
>>164417816

I’m Asian, relax. It’s corny, sure, but 60s filmmaking was pretty wild all around. Funny thing is in West Side Story I saw more Asians playing Latinos than actual Latinos lol

Rose
>>164411037

I love this documentary about Margaret Mitchell - “American Masters: American Rebel”: https://youtu.be/4rzQBbIOvks?si=sVHcxLbncV9hVCWG Also “Birth of a Nation” was my introduction to Lillian Gish. Her final silent film “The Wind” (1928) is truly mesmerizing. Gish and Chaplin made me fall in love with American silent cinema.

Mike LL
>>164411037

Clarence, I think your very rational viewpoint about Gone With The Wind might fall on deaf ears to those indulging in all the virtue signalling about faux racism going on around here.

Clarence Newman
>>164433814

Glad you clarified that one, Brian. At first, I assumed it was another bad character. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) is a really fun movie.

N M
>>164417816

Goldmember is satirical comedy all throughout the film.

Nolofinwe

Cassie you seemed a little unnerved in the beginning you mentionedshe let a strange man in her apartment .remember honey it was '61 the times werent as dangerous and headed for the mid 60s

Joe

In that thumbnail Cassie kind of reminds me of wacky Lucille Ball, LOL.

Joe
>>164433814

Mickey the 8th he was. That's the fastest way to the poor house I can think of, LOL.

Bill Maurer
>>164417816

This was made in 1960/61 by people who were born and raised in the 20's or even earlier. It was a horrible portrayal of an Asian(Japanese) male. But that was the times back then. We've gotten better, not perfect. I do not judge people who were alive 60 - 80 years ago by standards we ourselves cannot keep today. Mickey Rooney came out and apologized for his portrayal and the hurt it caused. I accepted it and moved on and he is a great actor. I hope The Black Stallion and National Velvet are on her watchlist. The Black Stallion is one of the most beautifully shot movies I have ever seen. Cinematography is ... phenomenal does not do it justice.

Bill Maurer
>>164412389

The Black Stallion is probably the most beautifully shot movie ever. Cinematography in that movie is priceless.

Stan the Man
>>164417816

Mickey apologized? I don’t call saying “I forgive them” an apology. That’s what he said, later in life, when he was told it was a racist caricature. He always claimed he was thanked by Asians, and never knew it was an issue. They knew his was wrong in 1960. We know they knew this because many involved in the film hated was Blake Edwards was doing. The writer of the script protested it. So they knew. And they did it anyway. It’s racist. It ruins the film. It’s one of the most overt racist stereotypes ever seen in a film like this. The buck teeth? The accent?

Stan the Man
>>164455405

The times were justas dangerous. But women had much less say, much less power, much less agency. Which is why this was seen as ok We can sugarcoat the past all we want. But it was just as vile & ugly. The difference is it was kept quiet.

Nolofinwe
>>164455405

Nonsense I walk to school every day I said all my friends kids lifted off the street was unthinkable women attacked on the street was unimaginable the idea that women have less to say is Miss women rent everything and they did it from the home until they were convinced by secularists that she would be more for sold in the work world

Chris Thom
>>164433814

Oh no way. Didn't know that. I always think of her from The Aviator. She was attached to Frank Sinatra at some point supposedly. Kate Beckinsale played her in the movie.

Chris Thom
>>164424863

Those lyrics always remind me of a Brett Easton Ellis novel. Like right before two intoxicated characters hook up and then immediately forget each others' names.

Clarence Newman
>>164465455

It's like one of those magic eye pictures, Clay. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Alas, you may need to come down here to my intelligence level before you can see it.

Clarence Newman
>>164465455

It also occurs to me (in all seriousness now) that if she had access to a good makeup and wardrobe department, Carly could totally pull off the image on the left.

TheSingulatarian
>>164465455

Cassie has It. Star Quality. I could certainly see that when her children are bit older her hosting Good Morning Provo or something even bigger.

TheSingulatarian
>>164455405

Tuman Capote as a very short man and very obviously gay. In real life I don't think he seemed like much of a threat.

Happy Hanukkah
>>164465455

While I have only now (as in one minute ago) noticed that at the top of Cassie's main page/feed here, the "tag" for Carly is reminiscent of the nearby film reel.

Guy

I’m sure the veteran patreons have discussed this already, but in the deeply complicated romance department, The Apartment is at the top of my list. And Cassie has already seen a few Billy Wilder films.

Happy Hanukkah
>>164417816

By the way, we all know about the blackface in Tropic Thunder, but the subtle joke in Galaxy Quest flew under the radar.

Guy
>>164421363

Having only known him on TV, it blew my mind the first time I saw him dance in Broadway Melody of 1936 (and 1938).

Happy Hanukkah
>>164417816

I am prompted to once again suggest Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993). :-) , but also seriously.

Chris Thom
>>164465455

She seems a little sporty for that look. But I'm sure she could pull it off if she wanted to.

Stan the Man
>>164417816

They “deserved” racist stereotypes? I think you shown your ignorance and hatred here. No one deserves racist stereotypes. You are painting an entire culture in a broad stroke because soldiers did bad things during war? So the Japanese in interment camps in America, did they “deserve” these racial stereotypes too? You see how this works? You can put your big girl pants on all you want it doesn’t change the facts. It doesn’t mean you can’t watch the film or that it has no right to exist but the film is marred by this racist caricature that exists for no other reason than to say “look at how ridiculous Japanese people look and sound! Laugh everyone! Laugh!” Compare this to Tropic Thunder, where there is an actual POINT to the racial element. It doesn’t exist for zero reason. It is there to critique this sort of thing. Here it ruins an otherwise decent film. It’s not funny, it’s cringe, it doesn’t jive with the rest of the film and sticks out.

Clarence Newman
>>164519857

I've said this before, Guy. It would behoove Cassie to get YT edits done for some of the Patreon exclusives (not all - Batman '89 should stay where it is), and keep them in her back pocket for when she's struggling to make quota. The Apartment and Starman, for sure.

Joe
>>164519857

Clarence, I don't think the very old patreon-only reactions would translate well to YT now, Cassie's reaction style was so different then. Be jarring to see on YT now, IMO.

Tim C

Good movie Kinda like Goodbye Girl with Richard Dreyfuss. 70s Why you need to watch Charade Audrey and Cary Grant a lot like North by North West.James Gardner had a few good movies 60s .(Rockford Files)

Mike LL
>>164519857

Watch The Apartment reaction, Guy, if you will, but to quote what Dr. Zaius said in Planet of the Apes to Taylor when Taylor went off searching on his own "You may not like what you find!"

Grad

Shaky love story, if you can even call it that.

Grad
>>164421461

"I don’t see either version have a happy ending. In the movie, we just see a happy moment as the last moment we see, and because of that, we imagine they stayed happy…but they probably didn’t." My thoughts as well.

Stan the Man
>>164417816

@ Catherine LW why are you being so rude and hateful? “Virtue signalling”?. I love how people come up with these little buzzwords. Someone was probably losing a debate & thought “Oh, this person has the moral highground, how can I make it seem like it’s all for show and doesn’t mean anything? Oh! I know! Virtue signalling!”. Virtue signalling. It used to be known as “decency”. I really think you should reflect at how you’ve come across here. You ignorantly claimed an entire nation deserves racist stereotypes. Now you are resorting to name calling. Why? Why behave this way? It a shame to see this behaviour on this channel.

David Spears

Charade is a good one with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. It is called the best Hitchcock movie Hitchcock didn't make. Cassie would love it.

David Spears

Another good Audrey Hepburn movie Wait Until Dark
