I was on a movie high after this one! It was a wild ride, made you root for him, want to shake him, I could hardly take some of the games! I’m glad Ben put this on his list, I feel like it might have been underrated? Ok, heading to Vegas, I’ll call you when I get back ;)

Rounders (1998) - Full Reaction - Popcorn In Bed

Watch the full reaction to Rounders on Popcorn In Bed.

Cole Jennett

Awesome, I needed something to do today between the NHL draft earlier this weekend and free agency on Tuesday, lol

Mark T

Woot! Yay, going to watch this today, been waiting for this reaction!

Matt Rowland

Highly underrated movie. The DVD has a commentary from various poker professionals, and they share some insightful comments into the world of poker (though they are silent for large stretches of the movie).

Shehab Dawoud

Definitely underrated. Any movie that can draw you in and keep you on the edge of your seat about something you don't know or care about (poker in this/my case) is doing a great job.

Just Plain Bob

I saw this film in the theater and absolutely loved it. Prior to that, I’d never even heard of Texas Hold ‘Em. I’d played plenty of poker (not well and not for money, just using chips to keep score), but it was standard stud poker or draw poker. Overnight, Texas Hold ‘Em became a phenomenon, with Matt Damon and Edward Norton becoming quite good and actually playing in the World Series of Poker. Suddenly, there were two or three weekly tv shows centering around Texas Hold ‘Em. There was a weekly Friday night game televised on the Travel Channel or something similar in which celebrities played for charity. ESPN was broadcasting every poker tournament they could find. It really took off based on the popularity of this film. Finally, I saw this two minute clip of Damon talking briefly about his experience acting opposite the sublime John Malkovich: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KMaAT_KPSs4

Goony71

Glad you finally watched this. I knew you would eventually see it and was hoping you’d enjoy it. It’s one of my many favorite movies.

Clarence Newman

I have not seen this one, but I am looking forward to it. It's got the Mighty Matt in it so I'm sure it's very good, but I find it hard to believe that it's better than The Cincinnati Kid (1965). That's Steve McQueen in his prime, with the super cool and the blue eyes and the magnechismo. Cassie has already liked him in Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, so she needs to treat herself. And me.

John Deardurff

I bet that you would go all in on this one. Pay the woman her popcorn.

Wes

“If you don’t have my money… “ Malkovich is a legend. Only he can pull off this accent and make it entertaining 😂😂😂

Brent Petty

3 aces and 2 nines beats 3 nines and 2 aces.

Just Plain Bob

I do love Cincinnati Kid and McQueen is fantastic in it (as always), but I actually think this film is even better. It was one of those films that had me on tenterhooks awaiting its release on DVD; I needed to own it and be able to watch it whenever I wanted. I’ve watched it at least two dozen times since first seeing it in theater. It really kicked off the poker craze of the late 90s/early 2000s.

Brian's Dog

In my friend group we often take turns saying "Pay that man his money" in the most ridiculous and exaggerated John Malkovich accent as possible.

Clarence Newman

Cincinnati Kid is the only decent poker film I know of (Casino Royale isn't about poker), so Rounders is going on my list.

Ted Whalen

I think that this movie does a really good job of capturing the energy and tension of a poker game. This is one of my favorite Matt Damon movies. I did get a chuckle when Cassie threw out the “douche canoe” term when describing Ed Nortons character.

JL_83

Solid all-around casting here; most especially love Malkovich’s performance, but funny thing is that Matt Damon told a story about a time on set where Malkovich apparently admitted to Damon that he was a terrible actor 😂

Rainmaker203

I really got into poker in the 2000s, and I can say this film (along with 1965's Cincinnati Kid) is the most accurate and realistic depiction of the poker world I've found in cinema. The game is a fascinating blend of math and psychology, and really has some high level strategy that is hinted at during Matt Damon's monologues. Side note, poker is not at all like other casino games (i.e. Slots and Blackjack), but I think people always lump it in with them just due to a lack of knowledge. In other casino games you are playing against the house and their advantage odds, so you are always eventually going to lose. In poker, you are playing against other people, so you can actually win on a regular basis if you have more knowledge and skill than your opponents. Also, the stories of casinos kicking out and banning players that win big at the tables, does not apply to poker. The casino does not care if you win big at the poker table, because they are still making money, it's the other players that end up losing money. Anyways, sorry about the sidetrack rant, really looking forward to watching this reaction!

James M

Edward Norton is from a wealthy liberal family and is a wealthy liberal himself. He's quite intelligent, graduating from Yale and regularly asserting his ideas in scripts. As you can guess this occasionally makes him difficult to deal with. It's always hard to deal with an intelligent, confident, assertive person which is a good three-word description of Norton. But this does not equate to him being a bad person. I believe he acts with a conscience and hopes his convictions contribute to a better world.

Mitchell Jones

I'm upset that my pick didn't win which was Enter the Dragon, which is in many people's opinion the best martial arts movie of all time, (you really should watch it) but Rounders is an awesome film one of my favorites, I've said it before & I'll say it again love watching movies with you it makes me feel like I'm watching it for the first again & like I'm watching it with a good friend/friends when you watch with Carly 😁❤️

Brent Petty

Trust me, Cassie. If he loses the professor's money, that will be the LEAST of his problems at that point.

Blake Evans

This is definitely a hidden gem I think. Great performances all around, except for John Malkovich’s god awful accent. But even that is a bit fun. “Pay that man his money.” One of the best worst lines.

Michael West

One of my favorite movies. Great cast. The characters are so interesting. Malkovich is so fun in this. It takes you on such an emotional ride.

James M

Strippers in movies: okay well it's not a polite answer but sometimes the truth is not so polite. First men like seeing women undress. Next men have more disposable income than women (even now after all these years of supposed equality). So you have money in men's hands and that women want and you have women with physical attraction that men want. They exchange it. Strippers are entertainers and men are customers. But what is the sophistication of this entertainment? Well it's pretty basic stuff. It's possibly the simplest of entertainment. Now men like this movie because it's a macho film, it's about men and about this macho pursuit of playing poker. It's a magnet for the lowest denominator of male entertainment: strippers. The more you watch these macho films the more you see strippers. There are much more sophisticated movies than this in the world. If you start to watch them you will not see strippers very often. Note that I didn't say "better" films. I'm not saying those are better, but they are without question more intellectually and emotionally demanding than this. They are more complex films. IMO it's fine to relax and enjoy this movie the same as it's fine to relax and enjoy a simple romcom. But they are equivalent entertainment.

Brent Petty

Fess up, Cassie. Ben, Matt, and a few other family members get a poker game going at every reunion, don't they? In my family on my dad's side, he and my uncles played hearts at every family holiday.

Brent Petty

I can totally see this film stressing poor Carly really badly. :)

christopher b swanson

This is considered the best poker movie ever, it's great..........and yes underrated............1 reason I think it's great is that it came out and became a cult hit just as poker hit mainstream and became huge..............

Brent Petty

He's the reason American History X is the way it is. He involved himself to the point the director tried to have his own name removed from it, since Norton changed so much of it.

Cole Jennett

“This isn’t making me like John Malkovich more, it’s making me like Oreo’s less!!” Has to be my new favourite Cassie line. Love it!

Mark T

Just finished watching, great movie and great reaction as always!

Bob Bagstone

Absolutely underrated. Saw it when it was new, loved it ever since

Choof

I, like a lot of my friends, gotta really into poker when this became a cult classic on TV and especially after the 2003 world series of poker which was the big boom of poker. Played for a few years but then stopped while some friends kept going. Usually the character archetype of Worm, of the fast talking con man screw-up who only makes things worse is a type i find so horrible but Norton does the best ever version here so I forgive it. As for the question of the ubiquity of strip clubs in movies. While they are very common in cities, there are 5-6 in the nearest big city to me, they are generally considered sleazy and macho places so if a movie is trying to show a sleazy world or characters its an easy visual short hand to portray it. I won't go much further because no one is interested in my personal exploits haha. With you having watched this, it now completes my first 5 movies I submitted nearly 3 years ago when I first won trivia. The Big Lebowski Zodiac L.A. Confidential JoJo Rabbit Rounders I will forever feel fortunate I found your channel, that you ended up watching all 5, and that you remain and always will remain the best thing on the internet

Shehab Dawoud

Please watch The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) if you want to see Matt Damon at his very best and a side you probably haven't seen before. Two newer films where I also thought he was great were The Last Duel (2021) and Air (2023).

Uncle Phoenix

Wow, this movie hits different now that I’m older. I totally understand Knish’s point of view when he told Mike “No" on the money; and it was so Touching when the Professor wrote that check for Mike. I always Loved this movie, because growing up it is hard to Let Go of some bad friends.

2-Can

I’m thinking you meant to say that Carly is more ‘risk-averse’ than you. For a Blackjack-themed movie, you may want to watch ‘21’ (2008) - about the M.I.T. Blackjack team that developed a card-counting scheme that let them beat the casinos (they are the reason why casinos have changed their blackjack rules to be even more tilted in the House’s favor).

Cole Jennett

She mentions having seen 21 in her intro

Ian A

Loving the outfit. I had a full on neon and black shorts and matching shirt, knee high socks and shoes with velcro for the first day of school in the mid 90s elementary or jr high. Had the gelled down middle part hairstyle as well. *cringe, but I thought I was the coolest* "Give that woman her money!" As for the strip club question: I live in a medium sized city and there is 1 here. I've never been and I don't think any of my friends have either. NYC had alot of clubs and xxx stores before Times Square got Disnified. Thanks for all the cool videos.

2-Can

Ouch - skipped to the start of the movie.

Jake McNulty

Not sure I'd say this one was "underrated" considering it was in the top 10 on popcornrequests.com

Steve Mercier

"This doesn't make me like John Malkvoich more, it makes me like Oreo's less!" Classic.

Matthew Folz

One of my 10 favorite movies of all time. I've been waiting for you to react to this one since I joined this Patreon and you did not disapoint. Some random notes: "He wants to turn back so bad.... like me going back for another piece of chocolate cake." Is an amazing line. Even though he plays a completely irreedmable a-hole, this is my favorite Edward Norton performance of all time. You associate John Turturro more with Mr Deeds than with The Big Lebowski?? For shame madame, for shame. :) KGB's tell (and I didn't pick this up til like the 10th time watching) was that he eats the Oreo when he has a great hand and puts it down when he's bluffing. Norton and Damon actually played in the 1998 World Series of Poker. Damon was knocked out by the legendary Doyle Brunson.

Matthew Folz

Yeah, the commentary track is pretty awesome.

Gábor Árki

If you are looking for a likeable John Malkovich role, two I could think of would be BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (1999) and RED (2010). The former is hard to describe, but it is a surprising, meta role in a quirky and very unique movie. In the latter, he plays a typical unhinged character, but a likeable one, with a stellar cast.

Jason Henderson

People tell me I look like Edward Norton! I don’t see it really lol This reaction should be good! 👏🍿

Brent Petty

That's a solid group of 5.

Cole Jennett

I doubt I’d get a lot of agreement, but Jojo Rabbit is the best of the list imo. One of my favourite reactions

Johnny Bullis

Hey Cass.. I was actually gonna put this in as one of my pick of the month choices.. so Im glad you watched it anyway. To answer your question from the beginning and the end.. In the beginning Teddy KGB had three aces over two nines.. and Mike had three nines over two aces.. thats why KGB won. And for last question about the oreos that KGB was eating.. the way he broke open the cookie was his tell.. if he put it up to his ear and broke it that meant he had a good hand.. if he broke the cookie in front of him then he was bluffing.. Mike spotted this when he folded that monster hand and KGB realized it thats why he threw the cookies at the wall.. Mike is right.. if you spot someones tell then you dont say anything. I love this movie.. its the quintessential movie for any poker player and actually started a boom of players the next year at the WSOP. Actually Edward Norton and Matt Damon both went to play in it. Fun fact. :)

Uncle Phoenix

Now I want to go play a Big hand of Poker and go All-In and say, “All In; I’m a Leaf On The Wind”.

Clay F

Good explanations. I believe a nuance on that last hand of the first game is Mike thought KGB was going for the spade flush, which Mike's full house would have beat.

Clay F

+1 for Air (2023).

Joe J

I have only a vague memory this movie exists, have not seen it. I will watch the YT edit. This was also recently on TBR Schmitt, it won a poll last month.

Clay F

Yep, a solid group of 5. I think The Big Lebowski is my top of your 5. But Jojo Rabbit is a close 2nd. I love that movie.

Clay F

Yep, John Malkovich’s god awful accent -- that was bad. But wasn't too distracting for me. I liked his lines at the end -- made for better movie for me personally.

Clay F

He does have that charismatic smile.

Clay F

Agree that Matt Damon gave a charming and nuanced performance, and Norton did the sleaze guy well. To me, what makes a big positive difference is Malkovich's last couple of lines in the movie -- with Mike winning. By the way, you don't have to show if the other side folds. John Malkovich is generally a good guy in Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun" (1987) (w/13-yr old Christian Bale) and in "The Killing Fields" (1984) (based on true story). I like that the movie calls out The Outlaw Josey Wales. Strippers (strip clubs) are common in that most major cities in US/Canada have them, though their numbers have been in decline the last decade. Houston has tons of strip clubs, and is known for having some of the best in the country. According to Google AI, several cities in the US have active/popular strip club scenes. Portland, Oregon, is cited as the "strip club capital" due to its high concentration of clubs and lack of restrictive regulations. Atlanta is famous for its strip clubs, e.g., Magic City that attracts celebrities and apparently has a unique atmosphere. Other cities with notable strip club activity include Las Vegas and Miami. Montreal is known for their vibrant strip club scene, but other Canadian cities have had a decline in the number of strip clubs.

Canadianant

In the continue the discussion of the ubiquitous nature of strip clubs in moviesagain as others have said I think it's partly that's where undesirables might hang out rough type characters. It sets a scene and a tone plus you get to see a pair of boobs ! The other thing that the modern audience might forget is in a preinternet era or even earlier 60s,70s, 80s seeing naked women wasn't all over your TV and you didn't have the internet to just pull them up should you want to view that. Quite frankly if you had an otherwise normal movie with a good looking woman who gets naked at some point you might sell a few more tickets. Look at the ubiquitous 70s and '80s screwball comedies where if I can be so bold a random pair of tits just shows up for out of nowhere. Look at movies like ski school , police academy , revenge of the nerds etc.think of trading places you know I'm sure word of mouth got around that you got to see Jamie Lee Curtis's spectacular pair. Yeah you get some comedy and you get to see a pair of boobs which was great for teen boys who found themselves with a shortage of (o) (o)s Even romantic comedies and dramas were not immune to this. Again it is a little bit of a different time but some modern movies still find a reason to add some nudity sometimes necessary for the plot other times not as much.

Canadianant

Can we get an uncut gems reaction? Great Adam Sandler role and very unlike his comedy characters which I think Cassie is more familiar with as I think she's seen almost all of the classic Sandler comedies .

Mike Lemon

John Turturro- from me he is always Ambrose Monk from the Monk TV show.

bknsty14

First time I had to pause Cassie so I could watch the end credits for the music

JaxonDanger12

Lot of great Malkovich roles. If you want a fun one with awesome cast highly recommend RED from 2010.

Old As Dirt Bert

She's seen his comedies, but she hasn't seen Spanglish where he's a pretty serious family man who's challenged to keep things together.

Matt Rowland

Some poker points for you Cassie. 😁 1. The hand where he lost it all, Mike had a full house (also referred to as a "boat"), 9s full of Aces (which is 3 9s and 2 Aces). Teddy had a higher full house, Aces full of Nines. Gut punch to lose like that. 2. Most of the games played throughout the film were various stud games. 3. The final winning hand against KGB, you were right, he flopped a straight, and with the board texture by the final card, Mike knew he had the nuts (best hand possible). While we never see KGB's hand there, the fact that he was betting into him probably means he had something, maybe Ace/10 for two pair or even three of a kind with pocket 10s, 7s, or 6s. That's the best feeling in poker is to know you have the nuts and have someone betting into you. 😁

Tom Evans

Interesting that this is the second movie in which Matt Damon's character acts as narrator (the other one being The Rainmaker). When I think of narration in a movie I always think of Morgan Freeman and The Shawshank Redemption, but it seems Matt Damon also has a good voice for narration. Regarding strip clubs in movies, I think a big reason you see that is because you watch a lot of older movies for your channel. Strip clubs are still around as a novelty, but they were a lot more popular in the 80s and 90s before we had the internet.

Ted Whalen

Matt Damon did a great job narrating the Boston Red Sox 2007 World Series commemorative dvd release.

shaneth138

You have actually seen John Malcovich in Secretariat!! He was the trainer and very lovable haha.

Cole Jennett

I’m pretty sure she has seen Spanglish

Johnny Bullis

Yeah I knew what Mike thought KGB had.. Ive seen that movie a hundred times.

David

In the line of fire is a much more memorable role.

shaneth138

Maybe to you, sure. Not to me. Also, she watched that 3 years ago and watched Secretariat just last year and loved him in it so idk.

Matthew Folz

Air was like an 80's time capsule for me. Would absolutely love to see a reaction to it.

Alex

In the commentary track there's a part where the real life Johnny Chan said that worm reminded him of Stu "The kid" Ungar (1953-1998). Ungar was the greatest poker player of all time, but as it says on his headstone, "A great person, but a greater loss." I dare say it was a bit of a cruel joke, but, sadly, it's not completely off base. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stu_Ungar

Mojo One Thousand

I have suggested this a few times before, a solid movies that involves poker and is also based on true events is "Molly's Game". With a cast the includes Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, and you man KC. Pretty sure it was Aaron Sorkin's feature film directorial debut and he also wrote it with titular moll"Molly", Molly Bloom.

fastecp1

This is my favorite Matt Damon movie. I can relate to this, for 13 years, I made a good living off of Poker and have run across a few people like Worm. It can get ugly when you catch them. I was gonna pick Enter the Dragon because Bruce Lee is a martial arts Legend, and everybody from my generation loves him, including me. But I thought you would love this. I do hope you play Enter the Dragon. I thought John Malkovich was great as the Teddy KGB. You did like him in Secretariat as Lucien Laurin. You have also seen him in Con Air and in the Line of Fire. He was also good in Places in the Heart, and the remake Of Mice and Men (1992), which I think you would enjoy. This movie is underrated. I am glad you liked it, Cassie.

fastecp1

I live in Maryland, and we have them in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., about 20 minutes from me, so I have heard. By the late 1970s, estimates suggest there were over 30 adult bookstores and 40 bars with nude dancing in D.C., with 22 located specifically along 14th and H Streets. I remember in 1978, when I was 16, they would let us in. Different times.

Joe J

Cassie confirmed on the EB LIVE she is also watching Enter the Dragon.

Gray

Entertaining film & reaction, the only thing I previously knew about this movie is from a interview of Matt Damon by the BBC where he talks about the film but mainly his enjoyment of John Malkovich's accent. "Payy himm. Pay dat mann his muney." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMaAT_KPSs4

Clay F

I noticed that Cassie immediately recognized John Malkovich.

Clay F

I like John Malkovich in Empire of the Sun (1987).

K, Zachary

Ok first things first if you want to learn about 90's fashion watch the movies Empire Records and I Can't Hardly Wait. I remember New Kids On The Block from the early 90's. You look like your headed to one of their shows. Which it isn't a bad thing. I identified more with the grunge look. It's still 90's. So you got it right. It's just I never was into boy bands unless the girl I was dating was. Kid Rock summed it the best when he ripped off Metallica's Sad But True "Punk rock, The Clash boy bands are trash, I like Johnny Cash and Grandmaster Flash". Ah yes Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. One of the roots of all rap music. Anyway on to the movie this movie has a special place in my heart. I watched this when I was 18-19 and it drew my friends and I into poker. We played every Friday we all got poker tables. Then when the last of us turned 21 off to Vegas where we take part in Texas Holdem tournaments. By our late 20's. Then we all started getting married or had serious relationships. Our poker days were done. Initially, I was going just going to wish Ben a Happy Birthday but something tells me I am bit late with that. I can imagine running a business with my gf Eva and I running it. There some couples can do it like my cousin and his wife who own a successful restaurant and who is in Southern Italy with his entire family rn. Other couples can't like my little sister . I know for Eva she needs a lot of support having to deal with sick kids all the time. I imagine running a successful business like Popcorn In Bed takes a lot of patience and a lot of support from both of you. Being in the public eye like that. I read some of the hateful comments on YouTube and that's why you guys have great moderators. However just some of the comments are just nasty. With people coming and going all the time. I imagine it takes its toll. Having someone there for you through it all. This is something I have come to appreciate. Plus you guys are raising 3 kids together. We have a ton of animals buts it's not the same. Ok I am rambling now but I want to thank Ben for not only his support of PIB but his support for Cassie too. How do we know? There was one Instagram post that had us both in tears of laughter both of us on the couch on our backs holding our stomachs. So Cassie picks up a bag of roaches for their Bearded dragon she is holding the bag like it contains explosives. She said usually Ben does this. We were laughing because Cassie sounded like every girl we have ever known. It was perfect. Both of us looked at each other and we knew. I summed it up perfectly I said thank God she has Ben who knows where she would be without him. My gf Eva replied back truer words have never been spoken. 🍿👍♥️

jimmy2k4o .

I don’t think Mike screwed up his life, he just realized he wasn’t living the wrong one. He’s supposed to be a professional poker player not a lawyer and his girlfriend would never have accepted that.

jimmy2k4o .

If KGB didn’t pay Mike, or beat him up or killed him then his club would die. Nobody is gonna wanna come gamble in a place where the management kills, attack or rips off the winners. And yes kgb’s tell was when he was bluffing he would pick up a Oreo and separate it but NOT eat it. When he had a great hand or “a monster” he’d split the Oreo and eat it. Mike decided to point out his tell to KGB because he knew it would enrage him. Mike wants him emotional because it makes for an easier opponent. Usually you notice the tell, you keep quiet and use the knowledge in the game, but Mike was working with a clock. The tell would provide an advantage in the long term but exposing his tell to make him angry would provide a larger advantage in the short.
