Old As Dirt Bert

I thought Cassie was still uncomfortable with the sea? Looking forward to this oldie tomorrow evening. I haven't seen it in perhaps 50 years.

Andrew Taylor

Gene tierney is fantastic in this, that score is so haunting and beautiful and Rex Harrison gave me whiplash at first but wins you over by the end.

MikeLL

Since I watch these reactions on my computer, it’s super easy to watch these old movies on Archive.org for free. I’m going to visit the seashore with some old friends later today! Great flick picked!

bgb1975 (Brian)

Am I correct to presume that there won't be a YT edit for this one?

Chris Thom

That would be my guess. But who knows.

Doc Larry/old geezer

Wonderful movie Natalie Wood was in the ghost and Mrs. Muir the same year her iconic character and memorable movie miracle on 34th St. She went from a child actor to be becoming a star in the 50s 60s 70s dying tragically in 1981 drowning under mysterious circumstances. at the age of 43. Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney were superstars from their generation.

Keith Brown

The beautiful music was composed by Bernard Herrmann who did many lush romantic scores for movies but is best known for his Hitchcock scores for "Psycho", "North by Northwest" and "Marnie" . He also did the Sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and the many Ray Harryhausen classics "Jason and the Argonauts, "7th Voyage of Sinbad" and "Mysterious Island". He started his film score career with Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" and ended with Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" !

Michael West

"Quaint" is the perfect description of this movie. A 40's classic in every sense. This Pick-A-Flick thing has worked out well so far. Thanks for another great reaction.

Joe J

I would expect no YT edit. Having said that, recent reactions to POTA 2001, Charlie Wilson's War, Born on the Fourth of July, and Shakespeare in Love sank without a trace.

Ted Whalen

I loved her in West Side Story (I mean who didn’t love her as Maria). Isn’t Robert Wagner considered a suspect in her “drowning” accident?

Doc Larry/old geezer

Correct Robert Wagner is a person of interest in her drowning.Natalie Wood's drowning was initially ruled as accidental but was later reclassified as a "suspicious death in 2012 Natalie Wood did not win any Oscars, but she was nominated for the Best Actress award three times: for her roles in Splendor in the Grass (1961), Love with the Proper Stranger (1963), and previously for Rebel Without a Cause (1956)

Doc Larry/old geezer

The One on your list joe j that surprises me is Shakespeare in love it was very popular. It was a box office hit I can understand the other movies not being as popular.

Joe J

Doc - many once popular films are old now, and mostly forgotten with the younger YT demographic. Another recently made film, "The Lincoln Lawyer", also sank on YT. Overall, the reaction space is also dwindling, so it's just much harder now to engage YT viewers. Many reactions channels feature mostly new movies and TV shows, this is what will garner more views. Cassie has not yet embraced that model.

Mojo One Thousand

Natalie Wood and her sister were in "The Searchers" with John Wayne, she was the older actor of the child that was kidnapped. It was reacted to a little while back.

Clifton Owens

Bright Angel, I'm 80 years old and have been with my wife since we were 13. We've been married for 60 years. Every year on our anniversary, we watch The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet ( directed by Franco Zeffirelli), and we add Pride and Prejudice from 2005. Sometimes, we sneak in French Kiss (with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline), my wife's favorite RomCom. Being Old, you can still be passionate. Thanks for all the time and hard work you put into your channel. We love you.

MikeLL

Yes, that was quite the romantic fantasy. I'm glad Cassie got to see a softer side of Rex Harrison. And got to see Natalie Wood again, who Cassie saw first in Miracle on 34th Street and The Searchers. Splendor In The Grass (1961) is my Natalie Wood jam. And rotten Uncle Neddy, George Sanders, can be quite the smooth charmer. He's been in a ton of movies, All About Eve (1950) would be a good one. Sanders was also in the original Saint movie series (well, I think he was The Saint's brother, but he took over the series and became the headliner, someone correct me if I'm wrong) a decade and a half or so before Roger Moore's The Saint TV series.

MikeLL

Bernard Herrmann's score in this movie is to die for!

Maria Torres

1:27 - They're in London - that's where the publisher is, and where Mr. Fairly lives. A "billet doux" is French for what amounts to a love letter. That was a bona fide late 19th century bathing outfit. It was made of wool and very uncomfortable after use. Note that it reveals her legs, very very risque!

Clarence Newman

Game of Thrones should be a solid earner.

Maria Torres

One of the most wonderful and versatile of movie composers! To think he only ever won one Oscar, though it was justified: for "The Devil and Daniel Webster", which is a family favorite. The music here is so lush, so deep, so gently yet sweeping.

Maria Torres

She has a way of giving Lucy that gentle approach that almost, almost smooths over her direct responses ("Don't deny it, Lucy." "I'm not denying it." It feeds into that kind of opposite composition of Captain Gregg: rough on the outside, vulnerable within. I always wish there'd been a last reconciliation between her and Martha. But I guess it can wait...

MikeLL

Gene Tierney was quite the looker! The film noir Laura is the movie she is best remembered for, I believe.

Mannygogou

Ooh I remember this... but don't remember how it ends. This should be nice 🙂

bgb1975 (Brian)

I must admit I haven't seen her in a lot of movies, but I loved her portrayal of Maggie Dubois in "The Great Race".

TheSingulatarian

One more great Rex Harrison performance as Julius Cesar in "Cleopatra" (1963).

James III

Thank you so much for your reaction to this beautiful classic film. I often re-watch The Ghost and Mrs. Muir when I am feeling low or lonely. The sea, the cottage, the gulls, and the very air itself are tangible reminders of the fleeting nature of life and the absolute necessity of the lives that touch us in ways that make our dreams come true.

Joe J

Weirdly, I'm looking forward to the random PR 1-300 Poll. Not really a fan of polls with mixed genres and mixed eras. Very large sample, so hoping for more than 1-2 films that potentially could win. Should be interesting.

Clay F

Natalie Wood (Debbie) was the niece of John Wayne (Ethan) who decided at the end not to kill her. Cassie in the outro of The Searchers reaction: "He had seen a war. He had seen probably more than the average man of death and hatred. ... But in the end, he chose, I mean the bar is low, not to kill his niece [chuckles]. Oh my gosh [laughs, covers face]."

Doc Larry/old geezer

🏁🎥🎸💔 This is a real life mystery that the answers may never be known unless someone does a deathbed confession or leaves a note. Christopher Walken is 82 years old. Robert Wagner is 95 the only two people on the boat that night other than Natalie wood

Chris Thom

Great young actress. RIP.

Larry Darrell

There were 9 original Saint films… Louis Hayward played Simon Templar in the first… The Saint in New York (1938) George Sanders took over the same role, just recast, for the next 5 films… The Saint Strikes Back (1939) The Saint in London (1939) The Saint’s Double Trouble (1940) The Saint Takes Over (1940) The Saint in Palm Springs (1940) Hugh Sinclair took over the role for the next two… The Saint’s Vacation (1941) The Saint Meets the Tiger (1941) and then Louis Hayward comes back for one last go… The Saint’s Girl Friday (1953)

Maria Torres

Oh, yes, definitely! His section is my favorite of the two.

Maria Torres

His farewell monologue is a masterclass in holding the camera and making you cry.

Maria Torres

Also "Leave Her to Heaven", where she's very different ... and filmed in color.

DAVID COSTELLO

I need to watch more Gene Tierney. Such a tragic life story but so beautiful.

Larry Darrell

Thank You WildMax and Thank You Cassie… so, so much. This was a Treat and a Treasure. And if you may… 3 films came to mind during this wonderfully peaceful film… Captains Courageous (1937) On Borrowed Time (1939) The Enchanted Cottage (1945) Just saying… it would be so cool to see more films from this era “Pop Up” more often. ;-) Looking forward to Bringing Up Baby :-)

Maria Torres

I love that movie, and Wood is stunning, cunning, and brilliant in it. Also this has got to be about the most fun I ever see Jack Lemmon have. Toss in Peter Falk, and how can you go wrong?

Mark Vaderr

Shakespeare In Love was popular at the time, but is not exactly a movie that is going to stand the test of time. It may have won Best Picture, but everyone remembers Saving Private Ryan.

Mark Vaderr

POTA 2001 & Charlie Wilson's War are simply just not good movies to begin with. Born on the 4th of July is not one of Tom Cruise's biggest hits, and Shakespeare In Love is more or less a forgotten Best Picture winner.

Mark Vaderr

Let's not forget the original "Cape Fear".

Stick Figure Studios

A real gem. Gene Tierney was one of the most stunningly beautiful actresses ever to work in Hollywood. If you want to see some excellent films starring her, I'd f recommend LAURA, LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN and DRAGONWYCK. Rex Harrison is terrific as usual, but George Sanders is a particular favorite of mine. I always love watching him in anything. I am glad that a charming classic like this got a reaction and I look forward to watching it again. We own the DVD so the convenience is also considerable. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

Herrmann also wrote a beautifully haunting score for Brian DePalma's OBSESSION with Cliff Robertson (one of his last scores). He really was a genius. Definitely in my top 10 favorite film composers

Darren Harrison

I always get this confused with the other Rex Harrison ghost offering “Blithe Spirit” (1945). I liked how they showed the passage of time through the deterioration of that post on the beach

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, Tierney was stunning, but also a fine actress. LAURA and LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN are both teriffic. DRAGONWYCK is another good film and she appears in it with her LAURA/HEAVEN co-star Vincent Price.

Carol_White

Not to be confused with The Ghost and Mr. Chicken starring Don Knotts. Not that I'm interested in seeing either of these celebrated films.

Stick Figure Studios

Sanders was a treasure. So charming, such a rich, deep voice. Such a classy English accent. He could play pompous better than just about anyone. I first knew him simply as the voice of Sheer Khan in Disney's animated JUNGLE BOOK, but when I later saw him in A SHOT IN THE DARK, REBECCA, JOURNEY TO ITALY, FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT and THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES, he became on of my favorite classic British actors.

Stick Figure Studios

I wonder if it's at all possible we'll ever get a reaction to Wood's final film BRAINSTORM.

Stick Figure Studios

Both are charming and enjoyable in their own way, but this is definitely the better movie.

Joe J

Most of the top actresses then and now, with some notable exceptions, have to be classic beauties. If they can also act, that's a bonus, lol.

Maria Torres

I agree! A combo of Noel Coward, Rex Harrison and Margaret Rutherford? Wow!

Maria Torres

I first saw Sanders in "All About Eve" and just about lost my heart to that voice, that expression, and that wicked, snide intelligence. Occasionally he played a noble character (like The Falcon, which he released to his brother Tom Conway), but for me, he's in his element playing gray characters, the darker the better.

Maria Torres

Well on that, only time itself will tell. To me, though it depends on people being educated in literature and theater, there's a good chance for it to stand the test extremely well. I continue to believe the "competition" between these two excellent and very different movies is artificial and meaningless.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, he's great in ALL ABOUT EVE. You're right about him playing gray characters (as in REBECCA and JOURNEY TO ITALY) and about his voice. In point of fact, my first introduction to him was through his voice only when he played the part of Sheer Khan in Disney's animated animated JUNGLE BOOK.

Mike Lemon

I know most of the people here don't pay attention to the VTuber scene, but a great injustice has been brought to light today. One of the big agencies has stolen about $500,000 dollars from charity that their (former) biggest name had raised for the Immune Deficiency Foundation. So if anybody would like to help them out, here is the video explaining what happened (about 11 minutes)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwLbGcUMy6g -and the charity link https://tiltify.com/@ironmouse/ironmouse

fastecp1

I enjoyed that. The older I get, the more I enjoy black-and-white movies and classics. I wish you would play a classic every week. There are so many great ones out there: The Valley of Decision, Night of the Hunter, Gone with the Wind, That Treasure of Sarah Madre, Inherit the Wind, Double Indemnity, the Mortal Storm, Of Mice and Men, and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. And then you have all the great Universal classic monster movies.

So before I touch on this pick of the month I want to touch on last month pick. I will try to keep this short. Growing up in the 80's and early 90's. We had no Internet no cell phones. So the only thing we had was word of mouth. My friends who are the same group of I friends I have now. We heard Urban legends about D&D none of them good when I asked my parents about it. My Dad told me that the game was a natural girl repellent. All my friends heard that. My gf Eva who lived down in Arizona at the time was told to run away from anyone who played the game. Eventually my friends and I totally forgot about it. Till Cassie said she liked the movie. So I naturally did my research. My brother apparently played it in shame they sold the game on eBay. My brother in law doesn't play it anymore. Apparently my little sister made him give it up. I guess he plays Magic the Gathering now. I suppose it's a generational thing. However when Cassie said she liked the movieand Since I respect her opinion. I decided that I won't bad mouth it anymore on any social media. Even it goes everything I know. Turns all the stuff we heard was mostly not true. They were just Urban legends. My gf may not like it but she also respect Cassie's opinion So we watched the The Ghost and Mrs Muir tonight. I had seen years before. I gave it a 7/10 so I must have liked it. My gf Eva really liked it. She thought it was cute and charming. I could tell she was really into it because she was petting our dog Freija and not even noticing she was doing it. She thought that Uncle Neddy was extremely creepy. She totally agreed with what Cassie said about it. A blown up picture of Sharon Tate hangs in our bedroom. There's nothing wrong with that.

Julie

I was so happy to come home and watch your reaction to this lovely classic. I am so glad you enjoyed it as well. As many have said, it's a gem.

Julie

Oh yes, I very much enjoyed Cleopatra. Such a great cast, it was truly an epic movie of it's time, although I'm not sure it did as well in the box office as they hoped. Still I would love to see a Cassie reaction to it.

John A

I agree, Gene Tierney is a stunning beautiful actress. I saw this movie as a young man and was amazed at her beauty. She passed away on my birthday and have loved her movies. I also recommend LAURA, LEAVE HER TO HEAVE, DRAGONWYCK AND WHIRLPOOL, WHERE TGE SIDEWALK ENDS AND HEAVEN CAN WAIT.

Larry Darrell

If anyone was thinking that this was the first time Gene Tierney has appeared on PiB, you’d be wrong. :-) If anyone’s ever looked closely at my Avatar over these past years, you’d have seen her image and name. ;-)

Lindsay L

Landlubber! 😂 This is one of my comfort films and I’m so happy that we got a reaction for it. I’m glad you enjoyed it! Can’t wait for the next one! ❤️

Stephen Dias

Gene Tierney was indeed a beautiful lady, as others have mentioned; I don't think I've seen her in any other movie. Also, I'd totally forgotten that little Natalie Wood was in this movie. It's such a small role, though. This was a good one!

Clay F

First watch. I liked it. Elegant aspects. Good historical feel. Gene Tierney is a beauty + good acting. Rex Harrison = good acting. “Don’t let anyone tell you to be ashamed of your figure.” I agree that is a cute house. The movie is bittersweet (more sad than happy to me) because Lucy and Captain Gregg are finally together only after Lucy's death. Their relationship as a living woman and a ghost was ethereal, complicated, and unconsummated = not that satisfying = “awful fix.” Rex Harrison = good acting (awesome) 20 years later in My Fair Lady (1964). He gave no prolific dancing but had a movement about him, and great w/dialogue. You mentioned his character Mr. Higgins was a grumpy old man and never got tender enough for you. Agree on both points. What bothered me is Mr. Higgins plainly didn't love her (Eliza – the Audrey Hepburn character). He wanted her as an object that he had grown "accustomed to" ("used to"). No great love story there. As others note, you saw Natalie Wood (Anna) in Miracle on 34th Street (1947) and The Searchers (1956). In The Searchers, she (Debbie) was niece of John Wayne character (Ethan). Ethan ‘heroically’ decided not to kill her (his niece) in the end.

Gray

Rather sweet movie I thought and quite the gear change having watched Cliffhanger a few hours ago haha.

Scott Macaulay

I thought I had seen this but I didn't recognize any of it. I think there was a TV show based on this and that's what I remember. Anyway, it was sweet and a fun watch.

Maria Torres

There was a tv show, with Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare. It was never family viewing, but I was aware of it.

TheSingulatarian

"Cleopatra" was actually a hit. It just had a lot of production problems that ran the budget up. The studio almost went bankrupt and was only saved by "The Sound of Music".

Catherine LW

I love Laura! That’s a good film noir classic!

Catherine LW

Gene Tierney was probably one of the most beautiful actresses of the Golden Age. Sad story about her. She was one of the many volunteers who worked at the Hollywood Canteen, a place for WWII servicemen to go to for entertainment, food and dancing with the stars. Bette Davis got the idea to open a place out of patriotism and support for all Allied servicemen. Major stars like Cary Grant, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, John Garfield and Katharine Hepburn regularly worked there, serving coffee and sandwiches, singing, dancing with the troops, and other fun activities. Tierney was pregnant at the time, and inexplicably came down with rubella, which caused her baby to have birth defects. A few years later, while the war was still raging and she still volunteered at the Canteen, she ran into a WAC, (Woman’s Army Corp.), who told her she was a great fan. She also confessed she went to the Canteen to see her while she had rubella, not wanting to miss out. Tierney said she didn’t say anything to her, but realized that was probably how her baby got sick.

Catherine LW

Back then, they had to know how to dance, and if they had a voice, they had singing lessons too.

Grad

First watch for me as well. Loved it. Superb pick Max!

Tinderbox

Omg one of my absolute favorites! How did this not come up in my feed?

Michael Weiner

Also Charles Nelson Reilly and Reta Shaw

Michael Weiner

First movie I ever saw with my wife....... sigh...........

Ted Little

The real estate agent was played by Robert Coote, whom you saw in A Matter of Life and Death as David Niven's crew mate, Bob.
