Hey guys, here's my full reaction to Saving Private Ryan! The YouTube edit will be out later in the week. Thanks so much for your support. Enjoy!

We didn't notice until after upload that towards the middle of the movie the reaction is off by about .5-1 second. Sorry about that, my gear isn't ideal at the moment so it's difficult to get everything in sync. I'll do better next time!

[Full Reaction] Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Odd Thomas

A great WWI film: A Very Long Engagement

Clay F

One of the best movies of all time. Early in the movie when viewers first notice Vin Diesel, they may miss the part what overwhelmed the Jewish guy (Private Mellish) emotionally was holding the Hitler Youth knife. After serving as tank gunner in North Africa and being awarded a medal for destroying a bridge, my grandfather landed on a Normandy beach on D-Day. He rarely talked about D-Day, but he told my brother that he could hear bullets whistling by.

There is a lot of truth in the realism how the war is depicted.

David Freese

Thank you for doing this Cassie and Ben. Thought I had lost this when my download was corrupted. Still one of the best reactions you’ve had.

Armchair Wizard

To be clear, he meant 35 dead and 70 wounded in ONLY his own company. Multiple companies assaulted those beaches. Each company had over 100 men. Between 100-250 men. I think 9 companies of 100-250 men attacked the beach in the first wave.

This movie is hard to watch. But is awesome in some ways. Btw on the start that german soldier who want surrender is from Czechia and he says: "I am Czech and i dont kill anyone." Many german soldiers was forced go in german army otherwise they would go to jail. This was sad moment for me because i am from Czechia.

Nick Hook

One of the harshest opening 20 minutes of any film I've seen..and then it gets worse somehow.

Nick Hook

We all feel the same way when it comes to Opem..though 'dagger through the heart' was a poor choice of words 👀

Jimmy Crackcorn

You did better than I did the first time I watched this! 👍. I saw it in the theater back in 1998 and almost didn't make it through the DDay opening sequence. Too real. Too intense; however so worth it in the end. My respect for WW2 vets, especially anyone who was a part of the Normandy invasion, went through the roof after seeing this and I have never looked at that battle or any vet the same way since. I watch SPR about once a year, so I never forget - along with BAND OF BROTHERS (produced by Hanks and Spielberg) after SPR. It might be even better than SPR, if that is possible. I believe everyone needs to see this at least once. Anyway, proud of you for making it through! I'm sure you wanted to turn it off at some point during the opening, but you didn't 😄.

Armchair Wizard

FUBAR means "Fucked up beyond all recognition."

I feel the same about our veterans, thanks for sharing that! You’re right, you want to look away and almost be ignorant to the horrificness of it, but we need to see it, to remind ourselves so we don’t repeat history :( Now i really need to see band of brothers!!

Hehe it's okay, easily done. That is literally the only scene I have to skip whenever I re-watch.

Labcurmudgeon79

They're most likely concerned about Capt. Miller's shaking hands because it is a sign of possible "shell shock". Basically PTSD. They didn't call it PTSD back then.

Fireteam Joker

Thank you for the genuine reactions! When Tom Hank's character talked about 35 dead, that was in reference to a battle that happened off screen. They never said in the movie how many died on D-Day. In fact 2501 Americans were killed in a sigle day trying to take that beach. I served in Iraq before I was wounded and even I have a hard time watching movies like this. Keep up the awesome work!

Bill

As much as i love Saving Private Ryan it upsets me that the mission was a fictional story based around true events. There are so many war movies i feel more emotional about because they are a true story.

Logan Serfass

This movie is fictional based on true events. It is suppose to depict what happened with the Niland Brothers. Look it up when you get the chance. Thats the real story.

Logan Serfass

But anyhow. The opening DDay scene is horrible to watch knowing my grandfather landed on Omaha. He landed later in the day but the fighting was no where near done. In the movie it was 15 minutes before they broke through and reached the top and captured land. That was not the case. They haven't got anywhere inland until late that day as in really late. And they had a very hard time getting inland. The biggest problem is the Air Corp was suppose to bomb the beaches along with the naval ship bombing the beaches to soften everything up which didn't happen because of cloud cover the bombers didn't want to hit their own men so they dropped their bombs too far inland. Also the tanks sunk in the channel and never made it in. The operation was almost a failure to the point where they almost upheld more people from landing. My grandfather never talked about the war he had very bad PTSD. Nightmares every night and so forth. The red water in the movie is accurate. He said the water was red along with the sand. Pure red. And just walking on bodies. Had no choice to. SPR only showed a small part of what actually happened there. Not to mention units were also landing at the wrong sections of the beach so it didn't help neither.

Popcorn In Bed

WOW! Just came back and read this after not seeing it originally. Thanks so much for sharing that. I can't believe your grandfather was atually there on D day. I'm sure it was very hard for him to talk about. It breaks my heart that he had so much PTSD after, but how could you not. Things you and I probably can't even imagine. Did he ever watch this movie? I have heard accounts of vets having to walk out after the first scene. I didn't know that about the Aircorp and the tanks. I'm surprised they didn't call it off when those didn't work. This movie really was so sobering/humbling and also inspiring for me to watch. I'm so thankful for your grandfather and all those men who fought for our freedom.

Logan Serfass

No. He hasn't watched the movie. He never told me stories as he passed when I was only 5. He told my father some stories but literally nothing. Other than DDay. And the battle of the bulge where he got trench foot. My father said he had nightmares all the time screaming and crying in his sleep. When my father was 9 years old, my grandfather ripped his patches off his uniform and his ribbon medals and gave them to my father and said do what you want with them and then my grandfather threw out his uniforms. Couldn't look at them no more. My life goal is to go to France, Belgium, and Germany and start at Omaha and trace his footsteps through Europe.

My dad is similar. Though he served in Vietnam as a Marine. I was never told directly any stories until I was in my twenties or early 30’s. Any I’ve heard were when he was talking to other vets. He slept with a K-bar knife by his bed for a long time, and I don’t think I saw any of his stuff until I was almost a teenager. The more a guy sees, the less he’s willing to talk about it. Especially with someone who never saw combat.

Anakin Starkiller

My grandfather once told me that war can change a person forever , until you've been through it you don't know what it can do to a person. My Dad never spoke much about Vietnam but it effected him alot.

Anakin Starkiller

My Dad was an alcoholic and I definitely believed most of it was from the war. I usually didn't question it because it I knew it helped him forget .

The paratroopers were off course in the landing spots to. I think it has that in Band Of Brothers. I don't know if that was on DDay or later. Alot of men had to look for their companies .

Anakin Starkiller

My Uncle was in the Pacific War he fought in Guadalcanal and Saipan. Saipan was pretty horrific. He said alot brutal trench fighting. The Japanese were dug in and ready for whatever awaited them.

Anakin Starkiller

My Uncle saw half the men he was was with killed in brutal ways by the Japanese. That will pretty much change you as a person overnight.

Logan Serfass
>>56138308

You're right. They were off course and scattered all over the peninsula. But they were focused on Utah Beach regardless. Omaha was suppose to be bombed softened up before the sea landings which were way off course

Paul G

The scene where all the women are typing up the letters to the families always gets me. In comparison to the rest of the movie that scene kind of flies under the radar but can you imagine the emotional toll that job must have had on those women? The scene with Pvt. Ryan's mother is also devastating. Spielberg's genius on display there, not a word of dialogue and it's still one of the most emotionally charged scenes in the movie.

Michael Sutton

This movie introduced me to your reactions and made me a patron. I have not seen anyone make the connection that was intended in this movie. When Captain Miller says "Earn this.", that is a message not just to Ryan but all Americans. We need to earn and remember the sacrifices made by the "Greatest Generation" to all of us and to remember that fascism is ever only a generation away

Brennan Shippert

Great reaction video and glad to be on your Patreon :) My dad's uncle was killed in action D-Day plus 12. I'm proud to have served.

CanadianNinja

FYI, the two "German" soldiers who get killed at 25:42 aren't speaking German. They are saying, "Please don't shoot me! I am not German, I am Czech! I didn't kill anyone! I am Czech!" When Germany invaded Czechoslovakia, they conscripted many of the local population and forced them to fight in the German army. In other words, the Americans didn't realize they were essentially killing Czech slaves who were forced to fight for Germany.

Renaldo

The letter read towards the beginning was written by Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. President during the Civil War

Just joined a couple days ago. Watched this on YouTube but wanted to see the full reaction. Hard to carve out 3 hours so had to watch it over a two days. Cassie, I’m curious, How long did it take for you to recover from watching this movie. It is an emotionally draining movie and I feel like you were probably exhausted after this. Take care of yourself!

Jason Dolan

Aw, this link doesn't seem to be working :(

Chris H

Yes, Vimeo link not working. edit: I should clarify that watching the embedded video on Patreon works. Just can't watch/download on Vimeo's site.

Jamie van Brewen

I'm no longer able to watch this. Did it get taken down? I hope not. :(

Zane From Canada

The review that Spielberg received, which he felt was the best and most worthwhile, was from some WWII veterans who attended the premiere. They said: "The only thing that was missing was the smell. Of the bullets, the bombs and the blood. Everything else was perfect." Forever a masterpiece!

Bonnie Jean Lee

I commented on the wrong post. But anyway. This was the best WW2 movie about the fighting. And I'm glad you didn't wait to do the overall reaction. It was heartfelt.
