Hey guys! Hope you're having a great week so far! Here is the full reaction to Maverick. I posted my thoughts on the Rocky III and it included spoilers (my bad!) and some people hadn't seen it so I think I'll stick to just keeping this short and sweet and if you want to know my thoughts I'll add chapters so you can skip through. Thank you all so much for being here, you're the best!!

Support Your Local Sheriff with James Garner

Luke Godfrey

Finally got around to watching this reaction despite being a Patron for nearly two years and owning this movie. Better late than never! I love this movie and have seen it many, many times over the years. Though as someone who plays poker, the inaccuracies in this movie still annoy me to this day. String bets, splashing the pot, tipping with tournament chips like its a cash game, and worst of all, slow rolling. It may make for good tv but making a player think they've won the hand before revealing the winning hand is such bad etiquette I can't even put it into words. An absolute no-no in a real game! P.s. I wish Cassie had seen this movie after she watched the Lethal Weapon movies. She totally missed one of the best cameos in movie history!

Marcus Hoelscher

This one meant a lot. Maverick was one of me and my Dad's (God rest his soul) favorite movies. Love the chemistry between Jodie and Mel and all the cameos. Especially Danny Glover quoting Murtaugh. BTW the dealer who gets stuck in his chair is Riggs and Murtaugh's Captain from Lethal Weapon as well. Seems like Donner was hosting a Lethal Weapon reunion on this set. LOL Thanks again Cassie!

Andrew

Such a fun movie. Hope you enjoyed it. And fellow Canadian Graham Greene’s (from Dances with Wolves) character was so good.

Mr Jordan

The neon sign does add a great flair to your reaction videos. Glad you enjoyed the movie. Surprised to hear you humming the melody from "Rawhide" while waiting for the video to load. Maybe you know more Westerns than you let on 😉

Future Boy

Looking forward to watching this for the first time in years (love Jodie Foster!). And great to hear Unforgiven, my favourite western, is coming next month. Oh, by the way, when you were talking about the westerns you've seen, don't forget Back to the Future 3!

Gábor Árki

Even though I just started working, after seeing the email I had to check out the outro at least. :) I was among the silent crowd who did vote for this one in most rounds. I always liked this movie and still remember having lots of fun watching it for the first time in the late '90s. The chemistry between the cast is great, the supporting cast is stellar, the story is lots of fun and there are several unforseen twists. Is it a western? I think it is. I mean what is making something a western? Personally I think western is much like sci-fi. In many ways it is just a canvas for the movie providing a different and less familiar and distanced setting for the story. There are so many different types of westerns: "classic" westerns, spagetti westerns, the more grit American westerns heavily influenced by the spagetti westers, western comedies, serious western dramas like Unforgiven, modern takes like Hell or High Water, etc. I was very confident Cassie would enjoy this one and glad it was a good choice. Also I think, both Dances with Wolves and Maverick were great movies to introduce and ease someone into genre, especially who is coming with some prejudice. Looking forward for checking out the full reaction tonight. Also I hope we will be getting a more deeper dive into the genre beyond Unforgiven. PS: I particularity enjoy Danny Glover's cameo in this one. The way they stare at each other during the robbery is so meta. The only reason I'm a bit sad is that Cassie didn't check out the Lethal Weapon movies before this one so I suppose she didn't get the running gag.

Johnny Salinas

Might I suggest "Quigley Down Under" it one of my favorite westerns and it takes place in Australia

Planner

I don't know where others would put Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969), but it's another western-ish that doesn't take itself too seriously. Good movie, too.

G

We knew who voted for Maverick that you would love it. We hope this movie will be your gateway to watching and enjoying more Western films.

Caomhan84

I love the new sign. It's perfect! And you've seen James Garner before....he was in a myriad of things, but he was the old man in The Notebook. :)

G
>>75989853

She will eventually get to the Lethal Weapon franchise, and I'm pretty sure she will remember that scene. That will be fun to watch.

Ike

Maverick is a great popcorn western-comedy. James Garner (Cooper) played the original “Bret Maverick” in the television series “Maverick” 1957-62. There were plenty of cameos and Easter eggs in this movie to name, but so glad you enjoyed this one. I’ve watched this movie 10 times in my life, but I never picked up on the Queen of Hearts at the end until you mentioned it. …and I dig the sign!

Patrick Flanagan

Of course it's a Western! Most people think Westerns have to be serious but there are plenty of lighthearted ones. You pointed out something which I think is one of the most amusing parts of this movie, that in this fictional universe Maverick just seems to know EVERYBODY and either owes money to or has money coming to him from somebody in every town he goes. James Garner was the original Bret Maverick on the 1950s TV series which inspired this movie; I guess here his real name would be Bret Maverick, Sr. Like most actors his age, he starred in plenty of Westerns, including playing Wyatt Earp in HOUR OF THE GUN (an excellent dramatic Western), as well as comedic leads in SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF! and SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GUNSLINGER! And yes to people of a certain age he's the old guy from THE NOTEBOOK. But his most famous role was probably as private detective Jim Rockford on THE ROCKFORD FILES, which is one of those shows which will still be enjoyable to watch 100 years from now, I think. The bank robber who Maverick almost recognizes was played by Danny Glover, his co-star in the LETHAL WEAPON series (which were all directed by this film's director, Richard Donner). The theme music playing during that scene is riffing on the LETHAL WEAPON theme. The movie is apparently loaded with cameos but most of them aren't recognizable to my eyes (lots of country music singers). That guy was in fact the dad from CLUELESS, although this movie came out the year before.

rubberkidney

i think the only thing ive ever seen alfred molina in is spiderman as doc ock.

Dirk Rheeder

I was really surprised that this won the poll. But I haven't seen it since release, so I thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and watch it again with Cassie. I can honestly say, I am still surprised and puzzled how this won the poll.

James Young
>>75993747

Mel Gibson plays the same character in this as he did in the Lethal Weapon franchise. James Garner was only included in this film since he starred in the 50s/60s TV show of the same name. Jodie Foster IMO is the only good actor of note here but this is far from her best performance. Check out Silence of the Lambs or maybe Contact or Little Man Tate for better performances from her. Even Taxi Driver if you want to go way back. But I agree, all in all, this is not the movie to watch if you want to get someone involved in great westerns.

TheToweringOtakunt

A commodore is a low flag officer rank in many naval services. It is also occasionally a title, but I think the Commodore here is intended to be a military veteran. The United States no longer commissions commodores as a regular rank, but it would be situated between a captain and a rear admiral (a one star admiral). In fact, rear admiral (lower half) may be seen as a replacement rank for commodore, which was also signified using a single star. Rear Admiral Grace Hopper (who was a noted computer scientist credited with the coining or at least popularizing of the term "debugging"), for instance, held the rank of Commodore before it was retired and her rank was changed. There may be a few officers who carry it as a title presently, but I don't know enough about the special offices which might hold it, so...

Bubba Fett

This is a classic and one of Garners best, I saw someone else mentioned Support you're local sheriff, another of Garners classic and very funny. If you get around to the great escape, he's amazing in that too, overall it probably has one of the best mixes of classic actors or just about any movie.

djKENTO

Heads up, depending on where you watch, the time code won’t match up because the WB logo is replaced with a newer version.

Steven Ashford
>>75986871

She said her dad had them playing in the background all the time and she was a kid. Probably subconsciously burned into her brain

Steven Ashford

Enjoyed watching you smile, I could tell you were really into the movie. As always you’re learning something new. When your voice got serious and said I’ve got a guilty little secret my ears perked up. Revealing that you love to play blackjack laugh out loud. And finally I was on a horse as a kid that got spooked and wouldn’t stop it’s scary. I ended up having a bail, Good thing I did it because it end up running into a Bobwire fence.

Brian Jones

Yep.... Time to watch the Lethal Weapon movies. :)

nick bell

The cheerful Disney music playing when Brett gets into a brouhaha adds a level of authenticity that can't be undervalued

Chris Lüders

Very nice reaction, Cassie. I really had a lot of fun with you 😊 and if you sometime watch the Lethal Weapon movies, you will have another 'reunion' with one of the characters (although it was vice versa since Lethal Weapon is older). 🤗 Funny is to what different movie experiences we connect different people. You thought about 'The Notbook' when you saw James Garner, while for me it will always be the series Maverick, Rockford and the movies 'The Great Escape' (1963) and 'Victor/Victoria' (1982, a very underrated funny movie!). 😂 Also the Commodore (James Coburn) will always be the cool, casual guy from 'The Magnificent Seven' (1960) or also the guy with the big suitcase in 'The Great Escape'. And don't be afraid, this now weren't any spoilers at all since it isn't interesting for the movies but only details which are easy to remember and I hope so much that you will watch these movies sometime. 😁

Gábor Árki
>>75999902

Wow, until this moment I never realized Britt from The Magnificent Seven and the Commodore from Maverick are played by the same actor, even though I have seen both movies numerous times. I feel stupid. :)

Christopher Smith

I will say it again, more love for Don Knotts folks. Apple Dumpling Gang is a Cassie western if there ever was one.

Steven Ashford

Ok patrons. It’s clear she loves poker. I’m not a movie expert but I know a lot of you are on here. Movies built the round poker might be her new thing give her recommendations. She was absolutely hooked on the card game aspect of this movie. Great reaction Cassie glad you enjoyed it.

aarswft

Did you recognize the actor who played Joseph was also Kicking Bird from Dances With Wolves?

Mr Jordan
>>76002668

"Casino Royale" if she wants to get into the James Bond series (the Dainel Craig one, not the David Niven one). There's also "Rounders" with Matt Damon that's my personal favorite.

Robin Craft
>>75993538

His filmography is large. The first role I remember him in is Satipo in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Joe Aschenbrener

Great reaction of a "Comedy" sorry this is NOT a western in my opinion. Thanks for your hard work.

Robin T

Once, when I was 17, I successfully did the trick of cutting to the card I was thinking of. Of course it took like 20 tries, and I've never been able to do it since.

Steven Ashford
>>76006096

Once when I was 17 I cut a card with a rifle. Haven’t been able to do that since either my eyes are too old

Yaisu

I knew you'd like this one.

Grinznmore

Same basic notes as Indiana Jones, Hans Solo, James Rockford and Martin Riggs. It always makes for a fun story. Really enjoyed seeing all of the older actors and stunts. This was Indiana Jones in a three-piece. It makes sense because they’re both an homage to old westerns and radio programs. The Sting is a crown jewel in con movies. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels would be fun down the road as well. Thank you for a fun reaction. It really adds value.

David Bennett

Inflation is a hell of a thing......30,000 dollars in 1875 would be worth 760,000 today..... Also, a commodore is a naval rank, the lowest flag officer rank, typically an officer in command of more than one ship. I enjoyed your reaction very much, Cassie! Just like always.....looking forward to whatever comes next!

Robin T

"..I think it takes place in the 50s maybe, like with the flapper girls..." Oh Cassie you sweet summer child 😂😂😂

Mike Lemon
>>75996226

I don't think the time code has matched on any movie I've watched here.

Mike Lemon

"That was so fun." "It was just fun." Exactly. That is why I like it too and why I voted for it.

Hannah Mather

This was a delight to watch and just the perfect choice for you! I'lll never doubt the silent majority in polls again

Gábor Árki

Just finished with the full reaction and wow, this turned out to be a bigger hit than I expected. It was a joy watching Cassie just smile throughout the movie and profoundly enjoying it.

Todzilla

Cassie, don't apologize for "spoiling" a movie that is FOUR DECADES old. This group is about YOU watching movies you've never seen. We recommend movies to your that we think you will like or you will have a good reaction to. On a side note: DARTH VADER IS LUKES FATHER. Thought I'd spoil that for the Zero people that didn't know already.🤣

Tobias Eiken

What are the odds of a game with three hands with four 8's, a straight flush and a royal straight flush? Surely a higher number than grains of sand on earth. And I've always wondered why filmmakers seem to believe that the better the poker player the better the hand he gets... Strange... Anyway, good movie and an enjoyable reaction. :-)

Dave Thomas

I'm probably not the first to mention it,...but James Garner, who played his father, was the original Bret Marverick..I loved those movies when i was a kid...("support your local sheriff")...also, Alfred Molino, who played the Mexican chasing him,.also played in Raiders of the Lost Ark..."throw me the whip,..I'll throw you the Idol..."

Damon Corrigan

Okay, so MANY things about this movie now that you have watched it. 1. Maverick was a TV show from 1957 to 1962, and starred James Garner (Coop in this movie) as the titular character, playing pretty much the same kind of character that Mel Gibson played in this one. James Garner is a well known actor - he starred in one of my family's favorite western, Support Your Local Sheriff. If Maverick is the Taylor Swift of westerns, SYLS is the Ray Stevens of westerns. 2. This was directed by Richard Donner, and produced by him and his wife, Lauren Shuler-Donner. They have collaborated on SO MANY movies that may not be top tier, but span so wide a gambit that everyone knows a few of them. Mr. Mom, Ladyhawke, Dave, Free Willy, You've got Mail, quite a few of the X-men movies - are just a few. There are also a ton of cameos in this movie of western music stars. Waylon Jennings (and his real life wife at the time Jessi Colter) were the couple with the guns that Coop tossed overboard. Clint Black was one of the poker players on the ship who was playing while his song (A Good Run of Bad Luck) was playing in the background. Jodi Foster has been in some good ones too - Contact is one that should not go un-noticed by you. All in all a great movie and a great reaction. Sometimes your predictions of a movie you don't know anything about is right on, and other times, they are just funny, and we all share a private little knowing laugh as we watch the movie with you as your predictions are proved or disproved. Just a lot of fun. Keep on keeping on, Cassie. Thank you so much.

Johnny
>>75995687

Commodore is still a title in the U.S. Navy. I served on a submarine, and we had a Commodore in charge of our squadron. His rank was Captain (0-6).

Mike Lemon
>>76034076

Well, at least one of those hands was from cheating and there are a couple videos on youtube with quads vs a straight flush, a royal flush isn't impossible. As to why filmmakers do it, the average audience isn't going to react to someone like Negreanu pulling a win out of his backside with a 3 and 7. It just isn't movie dramatic.

Brent Petty

Cassie, if you liked watching them play poker, you should watch Rounders, with Matt Damon and Edward Norton.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

"I am kind of wary about Westerns... for some reason, I associate them with, like, sadness... and... deserts..." LOL. Best part of the movie ;)

Gábor Árki
>>76036098

I wonder what were her thoughts a couple of minutes later when the opening scene was about hanging someone in the desert.

Brent Petty

Taylor Swift is not country, but I love Maverick. I think it's hilarious. That said, if we were to vote on a western comedy, I'd vote for Blazing Saddles.

Lawrence Adams

The first DVD I ever owned. Maverick always has a soft spot for me. I imagine some may have mentioned to see "Support Your Local Sheriff" or "Support Your Local Gunfighter" both starred James Garner. Both are fun westerns.

Mark Sahba

Also, James Garner played Bret Maverick in the tv show that ran five seasons . Maverick (TV Series 1957–1962) - IMDb

Alex Villarreal

Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson have such good chemistry and really look like they're having fun in their scenes. Makes sense that they are BFFs in real life.

Patrick Toscano

I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid and forgot how much I liked it.

christopher b swanson

To be clear..................I do not think it is on you to avoid spoilers when as movie is nearly 40 years old so don't worry about rocky 3 spoilers

inpham0us

Well, I think the people who voted for Maverick did so because they knew you would enjoy it, Cassie. And you're right...if you went out looking for the Taylor Swift of Westerns this movie is probably it. I didn't vote for it but because I think a fun part of this channel is watching you get out of your comfort zone and find new surprises. Maverick is a very PG, safe choice. IMHO, Maverick is a good light-hearted popcorn flick and glad you acknowledged that this is not really considered a traditional western classic. I hope you will give movies such as the Good, the Band and the Ugly/Tombstone a chance. But it's always nice to see you enjoy any movie! Also, now you have to watch the Lethal Weapon film series, also directed by Richard Donner and starring Mel Gibson, so you can get a kick out of Danny Glover's cameo In Maverick!

Carol_White

Well Cassie liked it, so all is well in the world.

Gideon James

That was a lot of fun, thanks Cassie!

Steve Colletti

Maverick is a light-hearted homage to the Western (many of the gamblers in the big game were 'Western' stars of earlier film and TV) made with 1990s sensibilities/perspective.

Texas Anla'Shok

I had the album to this when I was a kid. Used to listen to it all the time. Nice to hear those songs again. Oh, and I think the word you were looking for was "showdown", as in "showdown at high noon".

Darryl Chandler

I started not to write this but, Out of all the great westerns out there like "Tombstone" "Unforgiven" and many others. A joke of a western had to win. PEOPLE we should be moving Cassie more out of her comfort zone with edger movies.

Mike Lemon
>>76046701

I would have thought that, at least, after the reaction was out, people would stop with the 'you idiots voted wrong' and 'the only movie worth watching is the one I like' would have stopped. I was wrong. Just let it go already. Why is it so hard for people to understand that people actually like this movie? If you don't like it, don't watch it. It's simple. Unforgiven is coming soon, relax.

Jen Barnes

Cassie, pick movies however you want. I don't care if it's your choice, by poll, patreon begging, academy award winners, or out of the magic pillow case, I'll be along for the ride, enjoying with you.

Sahitya

Ok that was the most bizzare film ive seen in a while. Lots of fun, I can see the argument why to watch this over Unforgiven, but also recognize and see why not to. That Danny Glover cameo made me yell at the screen! Coming in between Lethal Weapon 3 and 4, that must have played well in theaters. That being said, dont see Unforgiven as your first real western. I feel like a broken record here but if your going to see one of the greatest westerns as well as one of the greatest films ever made, it would be ideal to have atleast some context of the subject matter before going in. Imo its sorta like watching the sequel or the 3rd film in a trilogy without watching the others. Sure you can watch it, it ofcourse stands on its own, but i feel alot of what makes it so lauded could be lost on you.

Mike Lipke

Unforgiven is an advanced western , for aficionados who understand the nuances of Clint Eastwoods storytelling . fun beginner westerns are Two Mules for Sister Sarah, True Grit with John Wayne , or even Little Big Man with a very young Dustin Hoffman

Sabrecho

I'd seen this far enough back to remember the Coop/Maverick twist so I was like, "Oh Cassie, wait'll you find out…" I must have said it four times. :)

Todzilla

Much like Cassie was surprised by Sports Movies, I think she will be surprised by Westerns. It wasn't until I was older that I started appreciating them. Anything with Clint Eastwood will be great. Magnificent Seven has the best theme song in any movie with the exception of Star Wars. Tombstone is just awesome, the shootout at the O.K. Corral. Westerns are apart of Americana! I know, she's Canadian, but you get my point.

Alex Villarreal

Randy Newman, the composer of the Toy Story movies, did the movie score for this one. Would explain why it's so jaunty and fun.

Alex Villarreal

Why, Cassie? I hear tell from this here reaction video she's the meanest, cleanest Blackjack card player this side of the Mississip'. They say it's legal to play that well, outside of Utah, that is. Yee-haw! 🤠

Mike Lipke

a lot of those old actors playing poker on the riverboat were old timey western movie actors , it was fun to point them out and shout their names

Tariq Amin

That was my first time watching a movie with you Cassie, and I had lots of fun. 😊

Andrew Hogan

Movies that can be added to list after you’ve seen this. Lethal Weapon trilogy. Rain Man. The Color Of Money. Blazing Saddles is considered to be one of the best comedies ever, but I’m not sure it would fly with Cassie. I’m just going by what I’ve seen from the maybe 30 movies I’ve seen her react to, but I’d be surprised if she liked it.

Sean Novack

I know "Unforgiven" took 2nd, but based on what you would like, please watch "Tombstone", which is actually based on a real story about real people. For other fun Westerns with fictional characters, I'd recommend "Silverado" and "Quigley Down Under". The gunfighter at the beginning of the film is supposed to be recognized by people who know their history. "Jonny Hardin" is supposed to be John Wesley Hardin (May 26, 1853 – August 19, 1895). He was an American Old West outlaw, gunfighter, and controversial folk icon. Hardin often got into trouble with the law from an early age. He killed his first man at the age of 15, claiming he did so in self-defense.

Bryan Harris

So Happy I joined Patreon (and a top tier supporter)... getting to see the whole reaction video is awesome!

Popcorn In Bed
>>76035394

I love when movies take the time to put little “easter eggs” in there like that, most of the time i don’t get them but still appreciate it and now when watching again i get to point out to friends!

Bryan Harris

Do you recognize the Indian? He was "Kicking Bird" in Dances With Wolves

Kevin Townsend

Another poker themed western is "A Big Hand for the Little Lady," with Henry Fonda and Joanne Woodward.

Shawn Kildal

I became a James Garner fan as a kid watching him star as Bret Maverick every Saturday afternoon. Used to love watching those old TV westerns.

Trembling Colors

I forgot that this movie was a sequel to the Maverick TV show James Garner starred in.

Dean Holt

Not seen this for a while and really enjoyed watching it again. Especially watching it with your brilliant reaction video. Not sure if anyone else has put this but the bank robber was Danny Glover he was in all the Lethal Weapon movie with Mel Gibson that why they where looking at each other in a funny way.

Gina Houston

"the whole time? ... the whole time?" ... just love you,girl...

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I also love playing Blackjack because it's not gambling if you're doing it right lol. Well, between Maverick and Unforgiven? Definitely going to see a full spectrum of the genre. I actually hadn't seen Maverick, didn't realize how funny it was, voted for Unforgiven, it is a great film but not exactly fun and I kinda feel bad, hopefully there's a much more fun watch following that. This was so much fun though, loved the reaction!

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Clue! After watching Maverick, with all it's twists, reminded me of 1985's Clue, based on the board game, it's a fun movie 🍿

Henry Fitzgerald

I'm going to have to speak very cryptically, but... has anyone noticed that screenwriter William Goldman throws in a twist to this film that's similar to one he's used in at least two of this other movies? (Maybe more, for all I know.) Does anyone have the faintest clue what I'm talking about? I wish I could speak more plainly.

MattN

I don't know if anyone has brought this up... but when Danny Glover shows up they actually play the Lethal Weapon theme song.... and the director also directed Lethal Weapon. You can't get more Easter egg than that!

Robert da Spruce

Nice reaction! I forgot how fun this movie is! Glad you enjoyed it. I recently watched your Dances (Dancing) with Wolves - Theatrical “Cat” reaction. So I was a little surprised you didn’t recognize Joseph was “Kicking Bird”. Shame on you “Watches in Bed”! 😉 Just Teasing! You’re right though. Maverick and Unforgiven are on opposite ends of the Western genre. Not sure how you’ll feel about Unforgiven. But you seem to be very opened minded. I look forward to the reaction.

xSHAKESx

This was great! This was the first one I've had a chance to watch along with a full reaction, but I couldn't resist seeing all the twists and turns and one of my favorite endings ever!

David Holmes
>>76171047

This would be more of a reboot than a sequel I would wager as James Gardner played Bret Maverick in the TV show. I grew up watching reruns as my dad was a dead ringer for James Gardner. It was the family joke my mom thought she was getting Bret Maverick, but got Jim Rockford. (The Rockford files tv show)

Jayson Phillips

The cheater they threw overboard 1st was Clint Black country singer,
